Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Problems after installing IE8

After installing IE8 the computer (XPSP3) will not shut down or restart. Hangs at Saving Your Settings. Can still move the mouse pointer. I went to uninstall IE but the Add/Remove Programs list won't populate. This also happened after the IE8 install. Any ideas?

EDIT: The shut down process actually passes Saving Your Settings and sits at Windows Is Shutting Down.

Try installing on older one, and run as far away from IE as you can!!! I did.

Try pressing CTRL - ALT and DELETE
In the box that pops up, can you reboot using the "Task Manager" functions in it?

Otherwise, here is some pages to also help:

You might have to reboot into safe mode to un-install IE8 if that turns out to be the source of the problem but we will go there at the appropiate time.

Computer won't start up now. With a normal boot the monitor just stays blank as if no signal is there. In safe mode, it stops at agpcpq.sys. Also, it won't shut down when the power button is depressed for the 4 seconds. It has to be unplugged.

Do you have a Windows XP disc at all?

    Can you enter the BIOS?

Ill give another response soon pending the answers

I can get into the BIOS. Can't get the XP disk until tomorrow.

Ok well I was gonna say when you do get your XP disc, make sure to go into the BIOS first and set your DVD drive as the first place to look for a bootable media.

I am not sure how the XP CD works but there may be an option to "repair windows" check it out.

Let us know how you get on, may have some more options after you have the disc.

other than that and this would be last port of call would be to reset CMOS

Might be a couple of different things going on here, not sure.

Changed the memory and booting is now fine.

The agpcpq.sys is the onboard agp video.

When I open IE it says Welcome to IE7, chose your setting etc etc, but help > about says IE8. Maybe install didn't finish correctly. Unintalling IE8 now. It wasn't listed in the control panel so uninstalling via cmd prompt as per here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700#ALTWin5

Strange though, I cant imagine IE8 causing all those issues, but uninstall and get firefox / chrome..way better

search youtube for speed enhancements in firefox!

Got IE8 uninstalled and it shut down correctly once. Not shutting down now though, still stalling at Windows is shutting down...

    hmm,

that happened a lot to me with my old HP...I never confirmed it, but I think the PSU was not good enough and it was just hanging / stalling with the occasional BSOD.

Is it home built or a brand model?

It's an IQON, which probably explains it.

There's various suggestions thrown up by Google and in the links above so having a look at those.

Computer is not coming on, again. :(

Power light on front is lit, but monitor is getting nothing. Monitor power light doesn't go green, stays orange.

I guess this is a desktop we are talking about. do you know the model number.

Also how is your monitor connected to the PC, is it via the DVI connection?

When you power up can you hear the fans and disks spinning up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 602 ✭✭✭eman66

Only have the box with me at the moment. No model number, just a serial number which doesn't get me anywhere - 183126182 TESCO2.

Should be able to get the manual etc. later.

Monitor is connected via VGA. Same problem on a second monitor. Can hear spinning at startup, not sure about hard disk though.

Is your connector blue in colour? If so this is the VGA connection.

Do you have a white DVI connection that you can plug the blue end into and then into another port onto the graphics card.

I had a problem where the monitor would not come to life unless I used the DVI connector, once up and running and graphics card drivers are installed properly I could revert to the vga connection again....worth a try to least try and get the monitor back online

    Below is the DVI connector

It's onboard VGA only, no DVI. I'll see if I can get a video card somewhere.

Did you go to the BIOS and set it up to use the onboard graphics, assuming it has them on the motherboard, might get you in.
