    €22 millions euro

Wow! Twenty Two Millions Euro Euro!

Damn, and the college had to cut back this year with tutorials and such. There's going to be a big sting in the tail next year I'd say. Printing costs €1 each etc. . .

insurance will cover it - but guaranteed, their insurance will be sky high next year, and they'll pass the cost along to us students!

Greetings all. Any idea if the hockey pitch is back in use yet? Usually have a game of footie there every xmas...just wondering if it's time to get a back up facility instead.

No, the hockey that was played on the astro has bee relocated - last I heard, they have to relay both the astro turf and the track as the food got uder both and raised them

Thanks for the info Rebel Girl 15. That's a pity about the track, that was only relaid around 5 years ago I think.

Are the rugby and GAA pitches back to normal yet?

Yeah, I think it was last weekend that one of the college rugby team played on the Mardyke pitch

Wow, that's hard to believe after seeing that pic of the rugby pitch in 5 feet+ of water only a month or so ago. Fair play to Willie and the rest of the groundsmen there!

It was gone off it the day after, and it hasn't been too wet weather wise, so that helped a good bit to dry it out as well

thats where us PE students were relocated to as well, it was a pain! I'm pretty sure the UCC hockey teams are using a couple of other places as well

there are a lot of ballincollig clubs that use that pitch as well, but I'm presuming over the Christmas, the whole place would be shut up TBH

Cheers for that information. Never played out there before. Do you know if that pitch is the new style astro, i.e. more grass-like?

Its an older style of astro, its sand based, alright bounce on it, (based on a rugby ball), grand underfoot when its wet (had the unfortunate chance to be out there while it was raining, not hard, but a really heavy mist)

AFAIK, moulds are allowed, I had on a pair of runners and was grand! Well marked out as well, with plenty of goals

Oh how I miss you dear Mardyke and the pretty sporty ladies that you used contain :(

    Roll on February.

    I presume they are carpooling??

We were getting a bus out there, provided by UCC, and some of us carpool.

    Most Recent Update

    17th December 2009

Since Monday 23rd November work mainly involved the cleaning / sanitising of the building; the making of the building safe; the removal of all damaged and non-reparable plant/equipment/fixtures and fittings, the removal of all ground floor doors and the removal of all plaster board walls. This work has progressed at a rapid rate and we now are close to the point of re-instating the entire ground floor from the ‘shell’ that now exists.

Unfortunately Christmas interrupts the progress! However we were always going to have to wait for key plant and equipment to arrive and also we would have to exercise patience in waiting for the building to dry-out prior to re-instatement.

We have set Monday 15th February 2010 as our target date for re-opening. While this date presents a great challenge, given the enormous scope of work that has to be completed and the total dependence that we have on all involved to meet key deadlines, we are as confident as can be that we can achieve this planned re-opening date. We will keep you up-to-date as the month of January progresses.

Ah that makes a lot more sense :o

All the same I'm still pretty annoyed that my own club's new arrangements mean I won't be able to train :(

The current situation of going to the students union for a voucher to train in Leisureworld is a joke. Only getting one voucher at a time and having to train at a certain time is crap, its better than nothing but still a p1ss poor effort, what are people supposed to do when the students union is not open or if someone wants to use it at the weekend??

They are changing it in the new year - this is from the students union site

    Alernative Mardyke Facilities Update

The shuttle buses to the alternative Mardyke Facilities for students will now leave from the Western Gateway Building Car Park and not the Rugby Pavillion.

Vouchers to access the alternative gyms (at Leisureworlds Churchfield and Bishopstown) over the Christmas period will be available in 6-voucher packs from the SU Common Room from Thursday. These vouchers will be valid 19th Dec-3 January inclusive.

In the new year, vouchers will be available in weekly packs of 3, that can be used at any time during the week in the alternative gyms.

Fitness Classes for UCC students will commence in January in Devere Hall, the Students’ Centre. More information on schedules to follow.

Any questions about this service should be directed to the Mardyke Helpline on 1800 28 30 35 (Mon-Friday 9am-5pm).

Thanks Rebel Girl, that makes more sense alright.

I went to get a voucher today at 3.30 to go to Bishopstown later tonight and i was told they were all gone. I was offered an alternative to go to Churchfield instead from 18.00 - 20.00. I also asked could i get more than one voucher as i train 4 days a week and didnt want to be coming back everyday for a voucher, that request was declined.

It's an absolute fcuking joke the way this is being handled, i mean having to go between 18.00 and 20.00 is the busiest time of the day anyway yet they try offload us students there.

Anyone else not happy with how this is being handled?

yeah it's terrible. i wanted to get one on monday while i was in college for use of the gym tuesday morning for bishopstown and they wouldnt give me one for tuesday cause i "had to get it on the day". also some of the times are retarded. like btown from 1.10, gym time from 1.30 to 3.30 then pick up at 3.50. who needs that long to go to the gym? honestly? once you leave you don't get home for 3 hours and its only 10 minutes away from WGB if that. One day i was also told that it was sold out. when i was walking home i saw the bus pulling out, i saw 3 people on the bus. such horrible organising.

No, there are bubbles in the track, where the water got underneath it. They will have to replace the track, but won't be done for a while because they cannot replace it in the cold weather, has to be done in specialised conditions. They had plans to close in the spectator area, and the track was going to be out of action for that anyway, but I'm not sure will they just wait until they do that construction work first before

I wonder will we get a part refund from our college fees for the time that the Mardyke has spend closed - it'll probably be out of action for 25% of the time we've pre-paid for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 614 ✭✭✭blankblank

Its a good idea but I doubt we will get any money back,,,, or even a reduced fee next year/ Even tough we completely deserve it, this whole bishopstown/churchfield is ridiculous

Just to say thanks for that, you've saved me a trek. cheers. f

    An absolute shambles.

It seems public membems of the maradyke can use these alternative places anytime by just producing their membership cards and signing a sign in sheet.

    Why cant we do that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 Busyness

Because public members would be asking for a refund if they weren't getting service.

The Mardyke doesn't respects the students money - the public would change gym if they didn't have the sign in sheet system.

Have no doubt that the Mardyke is an absolute scam for students - a few years ago it was optional. Now it's a mandatory €150 fee for every student whether you want it or not.

I totally agree with this! Even the part of our registration that goes towards clubs and societies is more justifiable even if your not a member, because thats all they income they rely on. The Mardyke however definately doesnt need our money to make profit! They'd surely make enough money off the students that actually want a membership than robbing off the ones that are forced into paying it through reg fees!!
Also I hear more floods are forecasted for Cork, could the Mardyke and all its good clean up work be under threat??

Not all of that capitation fee goes to the Mardyke. If you ask the SU for a breakdown of where it goes, they should be able to give it to you. Everything penny of the money has been voted in by students in the past.
