right Im in my final year of Pharmacology in ucd, the pdf on the teaching council website isnt exactly clear as to whether I can teach or not. So I was told to send off a form which I am doing, but now Im kind of worried as I always thought I could teach

    what it says is
Provided one or more of the following subjects are taken in the third or fourth year of an honours degree or the third year of a
general degree: Biochemistry, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Experimental Physics, Food Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics,
Mathematical Physics, Applied Mathematical Science, Plant Science, Science of Materials, Statistics, Theoretical Physics,
    Zoology
I took biochem in 2nd year and micro but these werent core options for my course. I was a joint physiology and pharmacology student till christmas of 3rd year. I therefore took all the core modules for these which are entitled PHYS or PHAR. I think that the above is for when UCD was not modularised/more segmented as you cannot do a subject Biology or Plant science in 3rd or 4th year . My degree is essentially a mix of a few of the above but Ive done very little entitled Biochem as I said. Our courses overlap a lot and many of our fourth year projects are similar accross disciplines, I think the same would apply for the likes of neuroscience.

does anybody know If its likely that my degree will be recognised, kind of worried about this now :(

going for biology and science by the way, I really loved the LC curriculm and it was what convinced me to do a science degree in the end

Although the TC have proved in the last week that there is no such thing as precedent , I am delighted to be able to tell you that I know of 3 Biology teachers who have degrees in Pharmacology. I'm one of those, I did Biochem along with Pharm in 3rd year to make sure I could teach and so far so good. The other 2 I'm sure about were also in my graduating Pharmacology class but I can't remember what their 3rd year subjects were.

The TC have recently up dated their approved list of degrees etc so I just had a look at the pdf and it says:
Provided one or more of the following subjects are taken in the third or fourth year of an honours degree or the third year of a general degree: Biochemistry, Biology (options: Cell & Molecular Biology, Environmental Biology, Genetics, Industrial Microbiology, Physiology, Plant Genetic Engineering) Botany, Chemistry (Option: Environmental Geochemistry), Experimental Physics, Food Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, Applied Mathematics, Plant Science, Science of Materials, Statistics, Theoretical Physics, Zoology
The other document they have on the site is the special requirements and within that they state:
q The study of Biology as a major subject in the degree extending over at least three years and of the order of 30% at a minimum of that period

q The study of at least four of the following biological disciplines as an integral part of the first year degree course: Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Mammalian Anatomy, Mammalian Physiology, Plant Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Ecology.

q Specialisation in one or more of those biological disciplines must have been part of the second and third years of the degree programme – allowing for adequate substitutions of discipline where appropriate, e.g. agricultural zoology may be substituted for zoology
So hopefully the fact that you had Physiology in 3rd year will cover you sufficiently!!

    Good luck with them!!

They're not really in the business of going around updating information when college's change their structure. They'll wait til someone comes along with a new type of degree and pay whatever it is to get them to have a look at it. Only then will they update that pdf.
So if as the previous poster said it's acceptable then you should be fine. Apply away.

In my experience they don't update the pdf when an individual person has their degree accredited. They only update the pdf when a college or university applies for recognition for one of their courses.

My degree is not on the list although the TC have approved it and I know the same applies for several of my friends' degrees.

Basically, they just keep getting €200 from people to approve the same course over and over.
