WATERFORD gardai have arrested five WIT students after they were caught with a stolen Super Value trolley in Lismore Park in the early hours of this morning.

The suspect student gang had been under surveillance for over two weeks before Waterford's elite undercover division swooped on the stolen trolley in the south west of the city at 2 o'clock this morning.

The student gang were taught to have been plotting the theft since they started college in early October.

One member of the gang had previous convictions for a similar theft involving a traffic cone and a poster which was violently ripped out of a bus stop advertisement window near the college. The man was caught by Gardai with the cone on his head at the back car park entrance of the campus in December '08. The poster was later found after an extensive body search of the young offender.

Bus posters and Traffic cones are common items taken by student gangs. They can be used as barter for weapons, drugs and even prostitutes.

It is understood that the Super Value trolley was often used by it's customers for collecting in store goods prior to paying for them at the supermarket check out. The '08 trolley also had a child chair and mineral bottle holder fitted for the customers convenience.

Super Value owner Mark Troy said today "I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear that one of our favourite trolleys was taken from our shopping car park last night. We are all still trying to comprehend what has just happened. What is the world coming to?"

He added "The super market will be closed today but it will reopen tomorrow in order to let all staff get over the initial shock."

The five students - all in their 20's - were arrested at the scene. They were taken to Ballybricken and Tramore stations. Gardai separated the men to insure that they didn't get a chance to collaborate their stories.

Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy praised the Waterford officers for their efforts.

"Inside information is very important to the Gardai in order to mount intelligence-led operations such as this," he said.

In addition to the gang's trolley, gardai also discovered a selection of burnt DVD's in the students rented accommodation.

No shots were fired in the early morning swoop, which was led by the Waterford special branch.
