Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Limewire is sinful and I wont even allow it on the work machines, which I dont even own or am meant to care about.

Consider Bittorrent protocol when downloading freeware in the future. Thats about all I will say. You shouldnt be downloading music unless its through iTunes or similar.

90% of the files on limewire are infected, if you do continue to use it make sure you invest in a good antivirus solution such as ESET (Available from ESET.ie)

    I'd say it's more 30% infected malware/spyware and 69% porn....

No matter what antivirus you have Limewire will mess your computer up, it simply will not catch 100% of viruses/spyware/malware etc. Limewire is a joke, never ever use it...ever!

That uses the Gnutella network aswell so that wont solve the viruses problem! If you really need to use limewire then make sure to click the music tab, then make sure the file extension ends in .mp3, not .cmd, .pif, .exe etc.. You do this within windows explorer, right click the file and select propertys, I would reccomend others advice to avoid such p2p programs tbh though..

Don't use Limewire. We had Limewire on our old computer and it destroyed it. Literally. It can't even be fixed. I'm not sure if I can say a site over this though. Don't ruin your nice new one with it!

Yeah i'm pretty much broke. I had typed in something like 40/50 but thought someone would go "oh i'll do it for 20" so i thought i'd stick it in anyway. Plus if it's cheap he might actually take me up :)

You might be referring to Board's need to cover its own ass. Of which Im happy to assist. But for the record though what goes on, on my machine, is between me and my firewall - Literally and Figuratively.

Fun Fact: PC World wont hire people with too much know-how. Or if you do, you have to have the absence of a soul. All the better to push copies of M$ Office instead of simply telling customers to save €100 and download OpenOffice.

That's what people call business... Any store in town knows if you went to a shop out of town or some shop across the street the customer would get it a bit cheaper if not up to half the price. If you went to night courses for something they're not going to tell you where to get a book instead or about some website where you can get it free. When you go to your mechanic he's not going to tell you hey you know youtube shows you how to do it for nothing. That's not being evil that's just making money. I've used open office. To be honest i think Ms office is worth the money. Open office has all the basic features but for some reason i cannot stand the way it handles files (as in it doesn't do it easily) and the UI isn't as handy either.

That was kinda what I was getting at. Kevin trying to accuse me of being a heartless bastard. Kevin should get back to me after he's done a dozen or so pro bono jobs for friends and family. I have bills to pay dammit and computer support is a very marketable skill.

Have to agree. Personally wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.
I've had to repair far, far too many machines over the years because of this one app (and similar) for people.

And not the good type of porn, alot of child porn floats around on p2p (aka pedoshare) networks like limewire, kazaa, bear share and the likes. If you are going to download things illegaly there are much better ways to do so, ones that wont get you V& !

LOL, don't kno whether to take that seriously or not!!

Norton is a virus, worst software ever made. Its a hog, not efficient at what it does, in fact there are people making a living taking it off peoples pc's and telling them they gave them a free upgrade

Same goes for McAfee by the way, even worse POS

I know there's a lot of crap going on in the computer world of people over exaggerating but this is one time where it really isn't the case...
What do we hate about malware so much: slows our computers down
What do we do to get rid of the problem: anti virus/firewall etc.

Considering those 2 facts, norton slows down a pc so bad that it's worse then any malware infection I've ever seen. It truely is a horrible horrible piece of software. I'm not even sure it does that great a job keeping the real malware out

Thats just being retarded. Security software is a backup safety net not an excuse to do something stupid.

TBH as with the case in most software, Open source is always the way to go, as they dont have any of the aspirations of big companys, ie Make money hand over fist whille screwing over the customer. The free Anti virus software like Avast, AVG and all the rest are far better, hog no resources and actually pick up all forms of intrusions, oh they update more regularly then the big players too.

A friend of mine downloaded "Charlie and the chocolate factory" and ended up with some asian porn... Needless to say I copied it when I had to to "fix" her computer due to all of the infected ****e she had gotten from Limewire:o

The topic has nothing to do with how crap norton may or may not be or how it compares to the freeware alternatives. Can we get back on track please.

I see the problems with Norton every single day on customers pcs. You say it runs lean and doesn't use much resources, but my experience is exactly the opposite, its a complete POS and should never be left on any pc. In fact You're the only person I've ever seen praise or recommend it (besides those monkeys in PcWorld), ever :D

Limewire is the second worst software that I see causing problems, riddles peoples pcs with viruses and malware and slows down their broadband by uploading in the background (when You max Your upload You can't browse). And then there's the fake and renamed files

While were on the topic of Norton anti virus, I connected a 6 year old computer to the internet today, it was never connected before and is running XP SP2. It connected fine and I was able to ping sites but no way would the browsers work. I ran all the anti virus programs I had and then tried Combo fix every thing came back clean and I could't understand why the browsers wouldn't connect then I spotted Norton's AV, it was uninstalled years ago but the remains were still there.

I followed this guys Dave Taylors instructions for deleting Nortons and changing the registry and then when Nortons/Symantec was completely gone I rebooted and all the browsers worked perfectly. Norton's Antivirus is nothing short of a virus that upsets other software and is very difficult to remove

Just to point out that non of the current free Anti-Virus apps are Open Source but are Freeware, just to make the distinction.

Overheal speaks of the newer version of Norton when he say's it runs lean etc.

Even if the newest version does pass as a decent anti-virus, it's been so bad for so many years while also making sales and profit, it deserves the terrible reputation to stick for some time yet.

Well as long as we're talking about it I'd also point out the distinction between Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security: The Former I would not buy, as it really is only about as good as any of the freeware out there (and its not like AVG and Avast dont have their own annoying quirks). NIS is great for me being a boot time scanner (via CD) and bundles together what would otherwise be 4 or 5 of the freeware programs that most people hold together with proverbial duct tape, like Ripley at the end of Aliens.

And if you see the Norton Security Scanner: it literally does Nothing. Its a textbook example of Adware. Delete.

Anyway the OPs question has been long since answered: delete limewire as its prone to abuse. And if anything, use a bittorrenting program such as uTorrent.
