Sokreun Mean, 36, a badly scarred victim of an acid attack, poses at the Cambodian Acid Survivors Charity (CASC) facility on August 1st, 2010 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She was attacked outside her home with a large quantity of acid causing blindness and severe disfiguration to her face. She has been operated on over 20 times. Sokreun was divorced, but the estranged wife of her husband became jealous and attacked her. She is one of 270 patients receiving treatment by the Cambodian Acid Survivors Charity (CASC), an organization dedicated to the welfare of acid survivors in Cambodia, since 2006.

Fantastic set of 2010 pictures here.

Went to the Taylor Wessing Photographic exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery in London last year, this was one of the entrants work to the competition. So, so horrific.

Rachel Whitear (6 February 1979 - 10 May 2000) was a British student from Ledbury, Herefordshire who died following a heroin overdose. Her death in May 2000 led to a large-scale anti-drugs campaign in Britain, particularly in secondary schools, when her parents allowed a police photograph to be shown publicly – it showed her discoloured body collapsed in the foetal position. The school campaign was centred on a 22-minute video called Rachel's Story. The campaign was seen as an equivalent of the anti-ecstasy drive undertaken after the death of British school girl Leah Betts in 1995 and a parallel incident culminating in the death of Anna Wood in Sydney, Australia.

Rachel Whitear, further evidence was found in that a witness had heard the ex-boy friend admit he administered the fatal dose. The boy friend later confessed.

From a suicide it then became a murder investigation.

Just a few photographs to show the devastation & damage.

Finally this is a picture of the giant spur that collapsed of a New Zealand Glacier

    glacier-iceberg-calved-christchurch-earthquake-new-zealand_32443_600x450.jpg
The New Zealand earthquake broke an iceberg the size of 20 football fields off the country's longest glacier.

A huge vertical slab calved off the front of the Tasman Glacier into Tasman Lake after the 6.3-magnitude quake had hit Tuesday afternoon. The temblor was centered about 125 miles (200 kilometers) away, near Christchurch (see map). (See pictures of the New Zealand earthquake's aftermath.)

The chunk is estimated to have been three-fourths of a mile (1,200 meters) long by 250 feet (75 meters) wide, scientists say.

The iceberg's collapse also kicked up 10-foot (3.5-meter) waves in Tasman Lake.

"We heard a large crack like a high-powered rifle," a U.S. tourist who had been on a glacier tour at the time told the New Zealand Herald.

New Zealand Earthquake Gave Glacier "Last Kick?"

Such an event is rare but not unprecedented, said Martin Truffer, a glaciologist at the University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Pieces of Alaska's Hubbard Glacier also broke off in 1958, following a large earthquake in the state's southeast.

Such events, however, don't occur totally at random. "There has to be an earthquake in the area of a glacier that was ready to cast off a big chunk. ..." Truffer said.

Furthermore, glaciers such as the Tasman—which calve into lakes—tend to be less crevassed, or cracked, at their ends than those that calve into the ocean. This makes such lake-based glaciers more likely to lose big pieces of ice rather than smaller ones.

"A block was probably ready to go, and [the earthquake] just gave it the last kick," Truffer said.

    Heavy Rain Eased Ice Breakup

Even before the Christchurch earthquake, tourist guides were already being cautious about not approaching the glacier too closely, due to heavy rain in past weeks, the Herald reported.

The rain had probably raised the lake level, which made it easier for large chunks to break off, Truffer explained. It's likely, he added, that the end of the glacier was floating, not anchored to the lake bed. (See extreme-ice pictures.)

"If you have a floating part of the glacier and you raise lake level, you induce bending [of the ice] that can help the calving process."

Ultimately the ice will melt, but in a cold, glacial lake, that could take as long as a year, he said.

This is Shane Tomlin who was rescued from the rubble of the bakery he worked in in Christchurch. His parents saw this photo in the newspaper so knew he had been rescued but couldn't find him anywhere. He actually died a few hours after this was taken in hospital of his injuries and his family only found that out days later.

His funeral was today. Just really brings it home and I can't imagine what his parents and family must have gone through.

I remember in secondary school our teacher brought in an article about this girl to share with us. As far as i can remember she was in the passenger seat and was trapped there after the crash when it was engulfed in flames. I think they assumed she was dead at first.

A really sad story in any case.

    Busing in Boston 1976 info

    539w.jpg

The Soiling of Old Glory is a Pulitzer Prize–winning photograph taken for the Boston Herald American in 1976 by Stanley Forman.[1]
The photograph depicts a white teenager, Joseph Rakes, about to assault black lawyer and civil-rights activist Ted Landsmark with a flagpole bearing the American flag. It was taken in Boston on April 5, 1976, during a protest against court-ordered desegregation busing.[1] It ran on the front page of the Herald American the next day, and also appeared in several newspapers across the country.[1] It won the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for Spot Photography.[2]

After the police broke up the assault, Landsmark was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for injuries, including a broken nose and bruising over much of his body.
