For those who don't know, that is Tom Simpson, he died of a heart attack while cycling the Tour de France on Mont Ventoux. It is one hell of a challenge in that tour. He was under severe financial stress and needed to win, he pushed himself to his limit and clearly beyond :(

    From wikipedia:

    Tom Simpson.

During the 13th stage of the 1967 Tour de France, Simpson collapsed and died during the ascent of Mont Ventoux. He was 29 years old. The post-mortem examination found that he had mixed amphetamines and alcohol; this diuretic combination proved fatal when combined with the heat, the hard climb of the Ventoux and a stomach complaint. A memorial near where he died has become a place of pilgrimage for many cyclists. Simpson was known to have taken performance-enhancing drugs during his career, when no doping controls existed. Despite this, he is held in high esteem by many cyclists for his character and will to win.

On cycling, the Irish RAS Tailteann has a very interesting history. Of note is the 1956 stage from Newry to Armagh when the RUC stopped the race and removed the Irish Tricolour which was flying from the leading official race car. A fracas then ensued between the RUC wielding batons and the Irish cyclists. The cyclists managed to win back the flag and proudly rode to the border.

    George Lincoln Rockwell

In the above photo taken on February 25th 1962, Eve Arnold captured a surreal scene: that of Rockwell, flanked by members of his American Nazi Party, listening to Malcolm X’s speech to black Muslims at the International Amphitheater in Chicago. It was an obscure episode in American history, when Rockwell’s white supremacists and Malcolm X’s National of Islam took segregation to its extreme ends and called for independent nations, separated by skincolour.
Rockwell was comfortable being a caricature. He believed all blacks should be deported to Africa; every Jew dispossessed and sterilised — hatreds dwarfed only by his disdain for ‘queers’. He also wanted to hang “traitors” such as former Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. When Playboy sent a black journalist to interview him, Rockwell sat for the interview with pistol on the side table.

Ok, another set of photos. I said I'd rather post them than share the link to them, I feel it has a greater impact on the users here. These photos can be described as more powerful than shocking, either way I feel it is appropriate.

Regina Walters, moments before being murdered – Robert Ben Rhoades was a truck driver/serial killer that liked to pick up hitchhikers and torture them for a while in his truck before killing them. One of his victims was a 14 year old runaway from Texas named Regina Walters. Walters’ remains were found in an abandoned barn in Illinois. However, her disappearance wasn’t connected to Rhoades until after Rhoades was arrested for abducting another woman. When police searched Rhoades’ home they found this photo.

POW blinking in morse code to spell T-O-R-T-U-R-E during a forced interview.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremiah_Denton
Denton is best known for the 1966 televised press conference that he was forced into as an American POW by his North Vietnamese captors. He used the opportunity to communicate successfully and to confirm for the first time to the U.S. Military (naval intelligence) and Americans that American POWs were being tortured in North Vietnam. He repeatedly blinked his eyes in Morse Code during the interview, spelling out the word, "T-O-R-T-U-R-E".

EDIT: Mods please move if this is not the suitable thread.

When asked asked about the reports that the POWs were being mistreated and tortured, she said they were "hypocrites and liars...These were not men who had been tortured. These were not men who had been starved. These were not men who had been brainwashed....but military careerists and professional killers...trying to make themselves look self-righteous, but they are war criminals according to the law"

I showed this to the brother in law yesterday and he said he'd read on the russia today website that this was fake. There was a few Soldiers at the reunion and the photo was taken after the event as the man waited to be collected. Unfortunately a search of the Russia today site yields nothing.
