We've always gone to Ark Veterinary Clinic on St. Mary's Road, the phone number is 091-584185. Always found them very good!

We've gone to Ark and Glenina over the years. Both are excellent but Glenina is cheaper.

I'm sure the other recommended vet clinics are very good.

I must say though, that I'm with Glenina now forever: they saved my dog's life when he was naught but a 4.5 month old puppy (required emergency call outs, IV drip, exploratory surgery, the whole works) and my 4 year old cat as well now.

    PS. GET PET INSURANCE.

In these straightened times, all I can afford is 3rd, party fire and theft on my cat...

On topic, I've always found Ark to be great with my cats. Never really had reason to go elsewhere.

Will never use Glenina again, disgraceful vet. Got the cat seen to out there before, was told i had to get some type of supplement for him (cant remember exactly what it is) in Oranmore, went to the chemist where city limits is, was then told its the other chemist in Oranmore town, then they said they dont have it, the vet should. Then went back to glenina and it was there the whole time!!

The problem with my cat is it over grooms constantly, had him to glenina at least 4 times gettin a different reason why he does it everytime and charged every time for something they cant fix! he is gone so bad his belly is red raw with no fur left and he scratches his neck so much it is an open wound. Brought him back to glenina said there is nothin they can do. So we said if he is in pain and ye cant do anything its best to put him down, they said no way were not doin that!!(in fairness whos decision is that to make?) we said ok we will try let him heal again.

now its back to the same thing again, so were taking him to a lad in tuam whos is suppose to be one the best vets in ireland tomorrow, his Tom Rennick if anyone had heard of him. ill let ye know how I get on.

We've always gone to Ark Vets with our various dogs over the years. I've been there a few times over the past two weeks with one of my dogs who has been sick, and we were very well treated every time. I had no problem getting appointments the days I rang they up. The vet even rang me the other day to see how my dog was getting on, which I thought was very nice. She got great care when she had to stay out there for various tests.

I agree, I once found a duck on Spanish arch with a fishing barb stuck under it's wing. The barb had a 3 inch lure attached to it and the fishing line had wrapped around the duck several times. I brought it over to St. Mary's road and they took it off me immediately.
By the time I'de smoked a ciggarette they had cut all the line off and taken the barb out. The duck was perfectly fine when I put him back in the water.
They laughed when i offerd to pay.
Nice crowd & not just in it for the money.

May I ask what you are feeding him? He could have a grain allergy, so if you put him on a really high quality grain free food, that might help him. Wet food is best for cats, but anything along the wet lines you can get in Galway is pure rubbish (the meat should be a named source and not by-products and there should be no preservatives or colours), so I order mine from Zooplus. My cats are fed Bozita and Orijen kibble to top up on and I must say it does make a huge difference to their general well being, my last cat was alive before Internet shopping and was in much worse shape as a result - you can really tell the difference. Amazingly, vets in general don't seem very aware of nutrition and its effect on health, so they only seem to recommend putting your problem cat / dog on something like Hills, which is not actually that great.

Make sure you're not using any chemical cleaning products around the house too, as he could be allergic to that too.

My late cat also used to suffer from over grooming, in her case it was caused by stress after we moved, so maybe you could try giving your cat lots of safe places to hide etc.

My youngest female had UTI's for a while after her Spay and I found this site really useful, they've got a section on over grooming issues too:
    http://www.vetinfo.com/cathair.html

I use Glenina myself and always found them very helpful, but problems like idiopathic over-grooming and UTIs can be hard to get to the bottom of.

    Good luck with your cat!

thanks for the link and the reply. he gets regular tinned cat food mixed with dry nuts. not too sure what make or anything as im not the one who does the shoppin and im not at home at the moment:o

the last topic on the link you sent me suits one of his problems. ill be sure to make note of the possible reason why he might be doing that and say it to the vet. may aswell get an opinion off a different vet anyway to see what he thinks.

also i wouldnt think its down to stress because he was raised here and always well looked after and always has attention.

another thing is we took him off the gspca when he was about 5months. he was found in a bin bag with all his siblings and he was the only one alive in the bag. he is blind in one eye but i cant see this being the problem either beacuse this was 5years ago and this is only happening about a year.

    Thanks again!:)

+1 to the Ark; only ever had positive experiences there. Deffo not just in it for the money; very reasonably priced for an Urban vets IMO actually. Always very friendly and helpful and thorough there.

But also +1 to the health insurance; start them young; and if they're going for any kind of op ask the vet to check the animals teeth while they are at it. The insurance won't cover any of the actual dental work if carried out; but it will still cover the sedation etc as it was needed for the specified op. Saves a few quid in the long run;); I saved €150 with the cat last time by doing it!

Brembo I would take the cat to Barna Vet Clinic & tell Leanne, the vet, exactly what has happened to date. She is the best vet that I have come across. I know her history & I also know one of the Vets that she used to work with. She has an excellent reputation.

The Ark are good but like all big practises it can depend a little on which vet deals with your case. With Barna you get a very personal service & Leanne is a cat lover !. Your type of case can be tricky so I would always get more than one opinion.

Anyone know how much a visit is? have a kitten thats got a blocked nose and is sneezing. I'm broke and want to find a vet thats not too expensive, in the past have spent a lot and not been satisfied..

At the Ark for a sick cat/dog usually about €60 quid or so including whatever drugs you need. I think their basic consultation fee is about €50.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,899 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

Barna Vet clinic charge about €40 per consultation. A sneezing kitten is potentially serious & needs attention - could be cat flu.

if you are looking for a good vet in galway on the east side of the city, briarhill vets are good - fairly new I think but great service and good facilities. I took my dog Bingo in because he was not eating - turned out to be a tooth problem - all sorted now.

inspired38 please don't bump old threads with recommendations.
You probably mean well but it looks like you're paid to secretly advertise these places.

    Thanks.

Btw, vet questions/recommendations go in Animals (Welfare) forum.
