RTE will never be free to air.

all 4 Irish stations going free to Air with Mvision HD 300 Combo. all you need - just plug in an existing Terrestrial antenna. I think 90% of Ireland covered. In Dublin works even with indoor antennas

To get back to the original question: Freesat or FTA.

The above box appears to be another option. It allows a standard, i.e. non-digital, TV pick up both FTV and Digital Terrestrial signals. IMO it is expensive for what it does and needs an external hardisk for recording. Nevertheless, it is a viable option and may suit some people.

Not meaning to throw this thread off on a tangent, and I'm not interested in purchasing the setup myself, but out of interest how does Freeview rate against FTA/Freesat? I've seen other threads discussing good spots for receiving transmission from Wales etc, but are the channel lineup, picture/sound quality, equipment/aerial price etc. any good???

Depending on your location you will be able to pick up some of the Freeview channels, mainly border areas and in the South East, there are stickies and threads about these in the terrestrial section and it would probably do no harm for you to have a read through them. Reception is hit and miss in a lot of these areas though and if its your BBC's, ITV's etc you're after Freesat is probably your best bet, its a simple set up and less complicated and expensive than most aerial installs as a very good aerial, diplexer, masthead amp, power supply, brackets etc are required where its just a dish and satellite receiver required for Freesat.

Only advantage Freeview would have over Freesat/FTA is that it carries a few channels not available on it such as Dave, Virgin1, Yesterday, Sky Sports News. At the same time there are fair few channels not on Freeview which are available on Freesat, too many to mention but probably not as high profile as the ones above.

Its a personal choice really but until the digital switchover is complete I'd be recommending Freesat to most as the price is probably better, reception is constant and picture quality excellent on most channels.

I'm very sorry in advance if this is posted somewhere before, but I've trawled through the threads and not being in any way technically minded I'm getting confused :(

We have Sky multiroom at the moment and my brother uses an aerial transmitter for his bedroom as there is no tv connection there. However we can't use wireless internet when it's on and he has to watch whatever tv programme is on downstairs and can't change the channel, so I was thinking of getting him a FreeSat box for Christmas.

My questions is, is it just a case of buying one of these freesat boxes and plug in & play or do we need cabling/hooking up to the Sky dish outside? (it's right outside his bedroom window if thats any use????)
Will he be able to change channels/hook up a DVD player to it etc?

Sorry for my simpleness...as I said I'm just not this way inclined

I had this problem before. What is happening is that the 2 wireless signals are interfering with each other. There should be a switch on the aerial transmitter that you can use to transmit on a different channel. If there's not, you should be able to enter your wireless router settings and change the channel on that.

Thanks for that stepster - I'll try that for the time being

Would still appreciate a few pointers on the Freesat box though if anyone can help?

Anyone recommend a good installer near Bandon or Clonakilty in Cork? I am looking to get freesat and a roof aerial for RTE, TG4 etc, installed.

Roughly (very roughly) what kind of prices should I be looking for for that i.e. for the freesat and for the roof aerial.

    Thanks

Free Sat or Free to Air?

Option C is a DIY install of a second hand Sky digibox - there was one on adverts.ie for €15 without remote
this will give you the program guide etc

It is an option but abselute persecution to browse. A person could always use the favourites tab to store what they watch but it's just not the biz at all.

    Amen.

I have even considered getting something like LIRC to keep track of recent channels so I could use it for now/next , maybe a touch screen with favorites ??

But it is still an option especially if you can scrounge one from someone that has upgraded to HD or somesuch

I hope someone here can help me out. I am hopeless with installing tv channels etc so I got someone to install my Skyline Free to Air 28207R.
The store I bought it from for 70e told me I could get up to 400 channels.
Only thing is loads have not come through which I believed I could get no prob. I have channel4+1 but not channel 4 and i can't get channel 5, bbc3 etc or film 4 or any of the sky ent channels like dave, yesterday etc.
I knew the RTEs would not be an option but that a very large no of sky channels would be included but when I click them on it just says no signal.
There is no manual with the box and I am at a loss as to what I can do to Also there are loads of signals beside the channels like a blue dollar sign which I assume means it's not free but there are plenty without this which are not through either...

You will receive up to 350 free channels most of which is crap their is about 70 to 80 decant channels available. You should have got an instruction manual from the shop where you bought it also the installer/guy who set it up should have scanned the box for free channels only.

Defo don't even have more than 10 decent channels and some of them have been installed 6 or 7 times. Is there a way to install channel by channel or to scan like with a normal tv as the whole thing including the remote is so badly laid out. Am I entitled to channels such as living or comedy central etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,702 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

look up www.freesat.co.uk and thats the majority of useful free channels (You won't get the fancy EPG etc but channel list will be same) plus lots more rubbish ones out there too.

You wont get any of the living channels or comedy central.
also the box needs to be retuned. Delete all the channnels that you have retune for free to air and then move all the channels you want to the front of the list and then delete all the crap.
