The i5 bends it over, spanks it then goes to retire into the smoking room to have a puff on its pipe while the poor AMD chips is left in the corner feeling abused crying.

You mean right before it does that to it's own socket and mobo? :P

    I call BS.

Pft, it dosen't happen on every single i5 board ya know, its only crazy people pumping stupid ammount of voltage through the cpu. I'm still yet to see one single fubar socket in work, and i probably see 40+ mobos a week.

he's right though, the i5 is a faster chip, albeit slighty more expensive.

QFT. The only reason people are burning out their CPUs is because they keep thinking they have the same volt tolerance as the 1336 socket, which they do not.

You should know that i5 simply hasn't had the penetration in this country for you to see any. LGA775 is still the mainstream and will still be on sale as the mainstream until after the new i3 and i5 chips are out.

Seems reasonable, has anyone got issues with this?

So, how would the i5 compare to a Phenom2 build on the same budget(or less) ?

Do you ask questions just so you can disagree with answers you don't like?

I like AMD but given the performance gap there is no getting away from the fact that its flagship quad 965BE is overpriced relative to the i5 ATM.

Web browsing and the like, but I was messing, hence the '':p''

It still may have its use becasue I might be building a PC for a mate, whos wants it for gaming and encoding/editing

Not so sure on this one, still debating, the 955 and 965 are still dropping in price, 130 euro and 145 euro respectively, plus cheaper motherboards. For a 500 to 750 euro budget build the 955/965 will beat the i5 in gaming builds, because the extra 60/70 euro saving will give you a decent jump in graphics card. Christ I have to stop staring at price lists.

I was going on HWVS price where the BE 965 is E145 and the i5 is E157. And I have seen them even closer in price elsewhere (On OC.co.uk 145 vs 150 GBP) . Just from a quick unscientific scan I would put maybe an average 20-30 euro premium on a P55 board myself (I am not as au fait with MB prices so I stand to be corrected on this point)? Which to recommend is currently close granted, but at the moment I think that the difference just about merits saying f*** it why not go with the i5. Put a clear 20-30 gap between the processors and it is a different story. Would also consider whether or not someone wanted to dabble in OC'ing or not (The 965 BE is pretty good but the i5 is substantially better from this POV)

*I must declare a vested interest in AMD price drops because I am tiring of an uneven number of cores :).

And what of the 955BE? Makes more sense from a price/performance perspective to me.

Can anyone suggest a good, reliable (non-foxconn), 1156 mobo that would allow for a nice 3.6 everyday overclock?

All P55 boards will do an OC with that,Lotes or Foxconn sockets. They Foxconn sockets only have problems with extreme voltages.Listen to Anti,he knows what he's on about

Please lrn2Know wtf you are on about! The only reason that the "Foxconn" ones are exploding is because people are pumping massive voltages into them thinking they can take it as well as LGA 1336 (which having 1156 pins as opposed to 1336, is a bit stupid).

Furthermore, it's been shown to happen to LOTES ones too.

Furthermore, 3.6GHz is pretty low and poor OC for a i5 750, the standard for 24/7 being 3.8 or 4.0

    If you want a good board, get a P55 UD3 or UD4 from Gigabyte. If you want SATA 6 and USB3, get a P55A UD3 or UD4.

New stepping changes things a little. The new 965BE C3s are hitting 4Ghz stable at ease now from what I've been reading.

The actual value of the 965 vs i5 depends on the application used. If we're just talking gaming the 965 is pretty tight with the new intels (again see the above review), and considering the lower platform costs... It's much of a muchness imo.

It is a nice chip, up the multiplier from X16 to X17 and you have a stock 965.

Cheers that is a interesting article, makes me want one even more. Certainly it is true if the only benchmark someone is interested in is gaming FPS then there is no real difference.

Whatever ones opinion it is good for everybody that after a few lean years AMD have an offering where you can have a debate about such things again.
