Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My laptop just died so I've to get a new one, preferably cheap. Got my eye on one with a single core processor and Windows 7 Home Premium. From experience I know Vista was awful with a single core processor, will 7 be any better?

Yes. Its much less demanding, on processor's, RAM and other system parts.
    No ifs or buts.
I have Win 7 on a number of much more older machines myself.
I've no doubts others here will agree.

I've been through 3 chargers since I got it, battery wouldn't charge at all and it would power off straightaway if the charger fell out. Been using my sister's charger for a while and this morning when I started it this mornin it was running chkdsk or whatever and there was, as best I can describe, a sizzling/crackling sound and since then the power diode doesn't even flash up. Not that worried about recovering it unless I can do it cheaply.

Thanks Biggins, may sort this out later if I can.

One of my friends is running it on a laptop with an AMD Sempron doing 1.6GHz and it's definitely usable - he's hardcore :p

    if the laptop sizzled
it might be the power socket on the laptop that needs a bit of soldering if it is loose

15 seconds to solder it :)
allow at least an hour to disassemble and reassemble the lap to get to that point

if it was the adaptor that sizzled :(

Aye I'll probably make an effort to fix it at some point, know a few people who'd have a clue how to do it. For the last year or so the battery only lasted 5 minutes max. The charger is fine, working on the sister's laptop. TBH I'm not too worried about it, backed up pretty much everything a few month's back because I knew it was on the way out.

How to describe the noise. Ya know when ya a computer freezes and ya tap a few buttons and it makes a retro "boop" kinda sound? It sounded like it was "trying" to do that. As soon as it happened my sister and I both just said it couldn't be good. :pac:

Where I work we're doing some cheap eMachines E627 laptops with single core 1.6 GHz AMD processors and Windows 7. I've tested a few and they're not too bad. Certainly usable, I just wouldn't advise using a heavy anti-virus on one (that includes AVG 8 or 9).

Got it up and running anyway, no freezing so far, which is a big step up from the last one. :)

be very careful of a sizzling laptop, it could easily burn your house to the ground, if left on a bed or couch

might be safest to strip out the hard drive ram and lcd and dump it (parts would be worth more then the entire laptop on adverts.ie)
