Interestingly enough they managed to keep a lid on the true extent of civilian deaths until after the Sept 18 elections, wherafter he was moved from Defence to Labour minister. Merkel is very quiet about it but seems she knew more about it than she is letting on. Should be an interesting couple of weeks in Berlin.
