So, here we go again. An old training log retired, a new log begins…..

And thus begins my biggest challenge yet – the Connemara Ultra-Marathon. I am aiming to run (or crawl/ walk) this in April 2010. I have 3 marathons under my belt (Dublin 2008 – 3:49; Cork 2009 3:25; Dublin 2009 3:11) and a few halfies (PB Dublin 2009 1:28), so thought it was time to push myself a little more!:D

I have kept up a relatively good level of fitness since Dublin Marathon back at the end of October, so I am aiming to build back up to a 20 mile LSR weekend run prior to new year, and then start looking at back-to-back LSRs starting in New Year. I am loosely following Abhainn’s training plan (in terms of weekend LSRs) from Connemara Ultra 2008, trying to fit in around work and other commitments as best as possible. I don’t think I’ll be coming in sub-5 though! More aiming towards a sub 6-hour target, and I’ll see how that moves as we get closer to d-day.

I see a number of fellow boardsies are doing the Ultra, and I’m sure you’ll be a great source of inspiration and advice as I pursue this goal, indeed best of luck to you all!

I'll start posting updates from tomorrow onwards, all going well.

I picked up this nice quote on the internet to start with, which gives me a hint of what's ahead:

"If you start to feel good during an ultra, don’t worry you will get over it."

I'm sure there will be, but hopefully these wouldnt involve anything like the amount of time and effort that my own wedding did in 2009! ... famous last words maybe.

    Jingle Bells 5k

And so the first race for me since DCM 2009, and my second go at the Jingle Bells 5k (19.48 last year).

Good running conditions today after last night's rain threatened to make things a little difficult. Good atmosphere at start. Noticed there were a few markers - sub 30, sub 20 etc up to sub 16 for predicted time. As I was aiming for sub 19 (3.48 min/km), I was going to go for the sub 20 category, but I noticed an awful lot of runners (some in costumes) up even in the sub 16 category, and knew i would have issues achieving the goal if i didnt move up.

Positioned myself just outside the sub16 category. Was feeling good for my target as the gun went off. Up to the first corner (c300-400m) it was very difficuly to work through the traffic ahead - ended up running in the muddy grass and having to do a lot of weaving - there were walkers ahead of me!

Anyhow, enough about that - the field spread out pretty quickly after the first kilometre and I was able to hit my target splits (hoping to go at 3.45min/km to give me an extra 15 seconds for the climb out of the Furry Glen). Was running pretty hard throughout, hitting splits of 3.45, 3.44, 3.45, 3.46 and 3.37. Was surprised with the flying last km, but felt if I had time in the bag and knew sub 19 was on, I'd be able to push it. Came in in 18.37, so was very happy with that - goal achieved, and new 5k PB by c. 48 seconds.

I have to say, the race was well organised (the business at the start was runners' fault rather than race organisers I think - usual issues with starting pens), represented good value for money, and had a good atmosphere.

Aware 10k next saturday, but will need to get in a c.15 miler tomorrow as part of the Ultra plan.

    Week 30th Nov - 6th Dec 2009

    Mon: 10 miles 1:16:44
Wed: Lunchtime speed work: 6.8k loop - 5k in 20:02, slowing a bit for full loop in 28:06
    Thu: 6 miles home - 46:44
Sat: Jingle Bells 5k (see above for report) - 18:37
Sun: 15 miles long run 2:02:30 (avg pace 8 min 10 sec). Heavy legs from 5k yesterday - quite stiff. Nasty headwind coming back from Sutton along the coast.

    38.3 miles total this week

Overall, decent week's work, but still not getting in enough mileage, no time for gym work either, a fact which is not likely to change over the next week or two.

On the other hand, am happy that i havent lost pace recently - still keeping it up despite late nights at work etc.

Good luck with the new log, I'll be following this one, I'm aiming for a sub-6 in Connemara this year too depending on how I recover from Barcelona so we might be in and around the same place on the route.

Now thats how you run a race. Great splits with an increase in pace the last km.
Stick with the same plan sat and you will achieve your goal.

    Well done again

    Hey Killerz,

I've just seen this log now so as a fellow entrant to the Ultra I hope to be keeping a close eye on this! You're much faster than me but at least the distances should be comparable for the training. I'll just be hoping to get around in one piece!
Anyways, best of luck with this!

Thanks RQ - hopefully i'll be able to achieve my goal, but i am going into this pretty blind, not having done an ultra before. hopefully indeed we will be in and around the same time - i may need to draw on your experience!:D

    Aware Christmas Run, 12th Dec

Apart from the well documented issues with this race, including the fact that it moved from 10k to 9k, this run went quite well for me. My ongoing target for 10km is to get under 40 minutes (PB 40:24 from recollection in GI Run in April), however, going into the race, and knowing the course, I wasnt too sure if a sub 40 would've been on the cards today, had the course been 10km.

Okay, so it was 9k. My target came down to 36 minutes (4 minute kms, in line with a sub 40 10k). Conditions were good, so I was hoping for the best.

After another messy start, hit my first km in 3:45, which was probably a little bit faster than planned, but i was feeling good. Worked up through the kms, hitting 5km in 19 minutes flat, coming out of the Furry Glen. Continued on at roughly the same pace, arriving at 8km in just under 30 minutes. The plan was to try and get to the 8km mark allowing myself 5 minutes for the last km. So I had 6 minutes to spare for the arduous climb up the khyber pass. I readjusted my goal to sub 35 mins. Found the hill really tough and was delighted to get to the top of it, then a couple of hundred metres on the flat and crossed finish line in watch time of 34:29.

Delighted with that run, and I am fairly confident that I would have nailed my sub-40 target, as I had 5 and a half mins to spare.

    Week 7th-13th December summary:

Mon: 6 miles 51:23 - slow run home after a good bit of running over the weekend.
    Wed: 8 miles 63:44 - 7:58 min miles
    Sat: Aware - 9k (5.6 miles) 34:29

    Total miles: 19.6

Very poor week mileage-wise, but thats it for the races for the year, and will be able to ramp things up now. Work not helping either - in quite late these days.

    Week 14th-20th December Summary:

    Mon: 10 miles 1:16:44 - enjoyable run.
Tue: 3.1 miles to gym 24:20; 30 mins on bike 11k; 3.1 miles home 22:30.
    Thu: 6 miles 47:48
Sat: 20.4 miles 2:52:57 - roughly 8:40 min miles. Very tough going, with a good few walking breaks. Ran further than had planned - got a bit lost:eek:. Very cold.

Total mileage this week: 42.6 miles + 11k bike.:)

Solid week's training in spite of christmas alcohol and food intake.

Hope to get a few runs in over the next week now and maintain mileage levels into new year.

    21st-23rd December

Mon: 10 miles 1:20:44. Very, very cold tonight on my traditional Monday 10 miler.
Wed: 7.7 miles 57:19. Once again, very cold and icy slowing me right down. almost snotted myself a few times tonight on black ice.

End of mini-week coming up to Christmas: 17.7 miles.
I imagine that there will be minimal running done over the next week - will just try to keep it ticking over.

    Merry Christmas to everyone.

    24th-28th December

Sat 26th: 5.7 miles in Murroe, Limerick (in-laws' neck of the woods) 46:51. COLD.
Mon 28th: 8.3 miles in Blackrock/ Dun Laoghaire. 1:04:37. Fairly icy out there, but an enjoyable run, and nice to keep to a decent pace of just under 8 minute miles.

Generally happy with Christmas mileage. Will have to kick on a bit distance-wise this weekend, as have only been getting in 6-9 milers in last week or so. All said, i think my body is thanking me for the rest!

    29th Dec-3rd Jan

Weds 30th Dec: 6.2 miles home in 49:48. Absolutely treacherous conditions - I would say that these were the worst weather conditions I have ever run in - gail force wind, ice cold rain... yikes. Nice to get the workout in tho.
Sat 2nd Jan: 2010 starts with an 18.5 miler in the snow. Time: 2:38:05. Slower than usual, and not as many hills, but no point in pushing my luck in wintry conditions! Beautiful day for a run, not too slippy, as was running in fresh snow for most of it.
Sun 3rd Jan: As the paths/ roads were frozen over, decided that it was too dangerous to run, so went up to the gym. Did 5.2k/3.2 mi on dreadmill (25 mins), 10.3k on bikes (25 mins), 15 minutes on a crazy stairs machine, and some core work.

Fairly decent workout, but skidded the car into another car on the way home. No major damage (I hope nothing major to the other car) as I was going really slow, but knocked the stuffing out of me nonetheless.

Total mileage this week (including Monday): 36.2 miles + 10.3k bike.
Total mileage this year: (excludes Monday & Wednesday): 21.7 miles

I think I met you running from city direction on Wed 30th in that rain and strong wind, it was just around the wooden bridge on the coast at Clontarf. Sorry to hear about the tip in the car. I skidded into the kerb yesterday, luckily no one around.

Its reassuring to know that there was someone else as mad as me on the 30th, running in that rain (and skidding in the ice!). Not sure if it was me you met tho - i didnt go the way of the wooden bridge - could well have encountered me elsewhere on the route!

    Week 4th - 10th January

What a frustrating week running-wise. Too dangerous to go out a lot of the days. Finally was able to get out on Thursday.

Thurs: 7.1 miles in 1:05:59. (c. 9 min 20 sec miles). Much, much slower than typical pace for this, but tbh was delighted just to get out. No slipping either - did lots of running in around housing estates. It was quite cold tho.
Sat: 8.2 miles in 1:08:37 (c. 8 min 30 sec miles) - A bit faster than Thursday's run. Maybe the confidence levels were up a bit.
Sun: 12.6 miles in 1:59:40 (just under 10 minute miles). very slushy today, definitely the hardest of my 3 sessions this week. Severe headwind along the coast added to the difficulty, as did cold, wet feet.

Overall, would like to be getting more miles in, but managed over 4 hours on my feet this week in the snow, so i'll take that.

In other news, I am heading to Canada for 18 months from next month, so i may need to get used to the snow! This does mean that I wont be doing the Connemara Ultra (this year anyhow), but I think there are a few alternatives near Toronto, where i am heading.

Will keep the training log going in any event.

    Total mileage this week: 27.9
Total mileage year to date: 49.6

Thanks Speedy44 and Macanri. I've no doubt it will be cold. I dont mind that so much, its the ice i really cant handle. I hear they handle the snow and ice a lot better in Canada tho - rock on! Long johns it is!

    Week 11th - 17th January

Another poor week distance wise, but i'm finished up work now and all things going well, i will be able to get in a decent week next week.

    Wed: 10 miles 1:17:35
Thu: Gym - 17.3k on the bike and some extensive core work.
    Sun: 8 miles 59:27

Total mileage this week : 18 miles
Total mileage this year: 67.6 miles

    18th-20th January

Good start to the week. Off work in advance of my Canadian departure (29th Jan), have a lot of things to do prior to leaving - tidy up apartment, pack clothes and bits and pieces, but also getting some running in.

Mon: 19 miles. 2:38:32 - c.8min 20 sec miles. Heavy enough going after the 8 miles the day before. A good run tho, with hills etc. Took in some of the locations in the film "The Van", such as the residential area, the boozer, and the beach. On another note, tried to run in around the Botanic Gardens - but they don't allow runners - I was told to leave! Why! It was empty!
Tue: Gym (Gym has working shower, I do not). 13.4k on the bike, + 20 mins strength and core work.
    Wed: 7 miles. 50:23. Fast enough for a wednesday - c.7min 12sec pace.

Power on H2 to this week!

Thanks rigal - a long week! Next race is a 30k road race in a city between Toronto and Niagara Falls at the end of March:

Apparently its the road race to do in Canada, and is the oldest road race in North America. So, might aswell give it a go. Nice distance aswell, between a half and a full marathon.

    21st-24th January

And so the second half of my mega running week:

Thurs: Was meant to do 10 miles but the wind and rain were awful, and no matter which direction I ran, the wind was against me! Did 8.7 miles in 1:10:31
Sat: 12.1 miles easy run with one of the lads (who is training for the Connemara Full). Leisurely, chatting pace, 1:52:49
Sun: Hard slog of 16 miles, incorporating Howth Head. Heavy going, given yesterday's mileage, but kept a good strong pace of exactly 8 min miles to finish in 2:07:57

And so the longest training week of my running career so far is over.

Total mileage this week: 62.8 miles
Total mileage this year: 130.4 miles

    25th - 31st January

After last week, which was the most mileage i've ever done in a week, following that up was going to be a challenge. Add in the fact that we had to pack up our apartment, put everything into storage/ pack it for our move to Canada, and it was clear it was going to be tough to fit any exercise in.

    Mon: Gym - bike - 11.4k in 30 mins + 20 mins core work.
Tue: 6.9 mile run in 49:13

Wed-Thu: Packing and prep for move to Canada
    Fri: Travel to Canada

Sat: 6.8 miles on treadmill in gym in apartment block in Canada. 50 mins. Very cold outside - my first outdoor run will be interesting.
Sun: 6 miles on treadmill, 50 mins; 2.5 miles on stationery bike, 10mins 30 sec.

Hoping to get some form of long training run in tomorrow. While it is very cold out (varying btwn -10 and -15), there is no snow, so at least that's something. I may mix the run half outdoor, half treadmill or something like that, if the cold gets too much!

Total mileage this week: 19.7 miles
Total mileage this year: 150.1 miles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Killerz

    1st-3rd February

Mon: First outdoor run in Canada. -5 degrees celsius (-14 factoring in wind-chill). Did 13 miles exactly, a fact-finding mission of sorts. Relatively slow - 1:58:48, reflecting the tiredness in my legs from past two days' running and probably the cold. Hydration pack water kept freezing up in the tube!
Tue: 3.3 miles on treadmill, 25 mins. Interval work -totalling 17mins, 30 secs at 8 min miles and 7min 30 sec at 6min 40 sec miles pace (if that makes sense).
Wed: 10 miles on treadmill  77:58, due to heavy snowfall the night before.

Hoping to do a 20 miler on Friday morning, will be interesting to see how that pans out!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Killerz

    4th-7th February

Fri: 20.5 miles in 3:14:51, incorporating a decent amount of hills and rough terrain. A real fact-finding mission in the city. A good part of the run was a trail in a river valley, nice and scenic, but quite cold, and was all on snowy paths. Also had to cross some frozen over streams which was a bit intimidating. some excellent running routes here.
Sat: 10 miles on the treadmill 78:34. Getting a little bit more used to running on the 'mill. The back-to-back weekend runs are beginning to stack up now.

Really pleased with this week's running:). Yes, the long runs are slower but (a) time on feet is important in training for an ultra and (b) I understand that your body needs to work a lot harder in the colder temperatures, so that would account for some of it.

Total mileage this week: 56.8 miles
Total mileage this year: 206.9 miles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Killerz

    8th-10th February

Mon: 8.5 miles outdoors along the coast - decent wind chill, but a nice run overall. 1:04:28. Some hillwork included.
Tue: 5 miles on the treadmill, easy pace. 40 mins flat.
Wed: 9 miles on treadmill, 6 miles at 8 min/mile pace, 2 miles at 7:15min/mile pace, first and last half mile at slower pace. Total time: 1:12:11. 3% incline for 1 of the 8 min miles, 1% incline for 1 of the 8 min miles.

Satisfactory start to the week, having to stay indoors due to snowfall, but still keeping up decent mileage.

    11th-14th February

Agggh - frustrating second half to the week. After last Friday's long run, felt a bit of soreness in my foot. Ran 4 sessions over the following 5 days knowing it was there, but ignoring it. Took rest day on Thursday, and it turned from being sore into a feeling like a vein was popping out everytime i took a step. Now, obviously that wasnt happening, but thats what it felt like. Have done no running since then - not feeling any pain, just feels weird.

Bad thing is missing out on back-to-back runs this weekend.

Gonna refrain from running until tues (bank holiday in Canada on monday), and if not in good shape on tues morning, will go to the physio. have tried to keep up some other exercise in the meantime as follows:

Fri: 1 hour cycle outdoors - damn cold! c.12 miles easy.
Sat: 35 mins cross trainer, 25 mins gym bike.
Sun: Planning on doing an hour or so in the gym before Valentine's dinner later on.

Total mileage this week: 22.5 miles
Total mileage this year: 229.4 miles

    15th-21st February

Injury problems continued early on in the week. But went to a physio here in Toronto on Wednesday and she did a bit of work on it, and it seems its nothing more serious than a strain. i can keep running on it, dependent on the pain i get.

    Mon: Gym - 35 min x-trainer, 25 min bike
Wed: Gym - 45 min x-trainer, 20 min treadmill (very slow, just to test out the foot). 2 miles. Seemed okay. Will hopefully get a run out tomorrow.
Thu: 5.9 mile run, no watch, just seeing how the foot was going. Once again, alrite, sore in places, but nothing i couldnt really happen.
Fri: 17 miles - 2:38:28. More about time on feet and seeing how I can push it after a bit of time off. Sore at times, around 12-14 mile mark, so walked bits of it. But, happy with my run.
Sat: 10.1 miles - 1:23:03. Very sore at the start, was going to turn around. Persevered and got it done.
Sun: 5 miles fast session - 32:55. Really happy with this, given (a) 4th day of running in a row (b) foot felt fine (c) had a hangover and (d) the speed was good.

Overall, the week was backended with a lot of mileage (40) due to injury in early half of week. Good to be back in the saddle. Fingers crossed foot stays okay.

    Starting work tomorrow!

Total mileage this week: 40 miles
Total mileage this year: 269.4 miles

Considering you were injured that's a good week of running Killerz.

How's the weather over there now?

    Thanks Rigal.

The weather was considerably better this weekend - even six degrees yesterday:cool:

I fear another inconsistent week tho coz just got hit by a serious snow storm today. i think that running on treadmills may have caused the problem in the first place.

    22nd-25th February

    Tues: 8.5 miles outdoors, v.cold. 1:14:24
Weds: 10.0 miles outdoors. even colder, a lot of black ice, but good time of 1:17:32
    Thu: 6.5 miles on treadmill, 47:32 - inc 1 x 6 min mile and 1 x 7 min mile.

Solid start to my week, and the runs are fitting in well around my work schedule.

    26th-28th February

Sat: 11 miles in evening - 1:25:32. Really was feeling pretty awful when I woke up this morning - headache and dodgy stomach. Add to that a huge snowfall, and there was no way I was doing the planned 20 miles today. Compromised with an 11 miler in the evening when I felt a little better.
Sun: 6 miles. Forgot to restart watch while out - roughly about 50 mins I'd say. Hangover today, plus moved into new apartment, so wasnt really in the right headspace for decent mileage.

Slightly disappointing end to the week, mileage-wise. The weather is such a huge factor, that it can be stop-start for the winter training. Just gotta plough on, I suppose.

Total mileage this week: 42 miles
Total mileage this year: 311.4 miles

I was wondering how runners maintained milage over the winter months in that part of Canada. Fair play Killerz, you are very committed.
On wards, Spring is here :D

Thanks Abhainn. Indeed the snow etc may have been more of a shock if it wasnt for the weather in Ireland in January. Still surprised at how many people are out running, even given the weather here.

    Bring on spring indeed!

    1st-7th March

Ah, the onset of Spring, how wondrous it is.
Suffered with a headcold much of this week, but was determined to bang out the miles. And I did!

Tue: 11 miles: 1:22:53 - roughly 7min 30 sec miles. Went well. Enjoyed this one.
Wed: 8.5 miles 1:02:46 - Good result, felt grand throughout, pushed the pace a bit over the last 3 miles.
Thu: 9 miles 1:11:58 - tough run. Both the cold and previous 2 days' running catching up with me.
Fri: No running, but went to see Rodrigo y Gabriela - really good. Standing up for 4 hours tho... ahead of....
Sat: 22.8 miles 3:25:52. Nice weather at last in Toronto - 9 degrees celsius, was almost over-dressed for this one. Challenging, but ultimately rewarding. Took in a lot of hills, continued on my gel and pretzel experimentations (Carb Boom strawberry - tasted awesome, not sure if it did anything for me, but i'd eat them for fun). Very, very tired at end.
Sun: 13.1 miles 1:42:45. Rough work getting out of bed this morning after 5 pints the night before, but pulled through in what is a respectible half-marathon time in its own right.

Positives: all runs this week were outdoor; all involved hills; tiredness from previous runs could be overcome, as could sickness; most miles clocked up in a week ever by me (64.4).
Negatives: Niggling thoughts as to how I would do a back to back saturday run - will need to do 50 miles in one session; keeping motivation going over next few weeks.

All in all, a great week, running wise.

In New York City now (Manhattan) for 2 weeks with work - just flew down on Sunday afternoon. Probably will be consigned to treadmill work on the evenings and a few laps of Central Park on Saturday and Sunday. Unless I do morning runs - unlikely. Will be stepping it back tho to about 45-50 miles this week.

Total mileage this week: 64.4 miles
Total mileage this year: 375.8 miles

    8th-10th March

Tue: 8.14 miles in Central Park in the evening 1:05:42. Lovely evening for a run, nice to welcome back the shorts and t-shirt for a pleasant 13 degrees in NYC. I was taken aback by the amount of runners out - didnt realise the PArk would be so popular.
Wed: 14.3 miles in the Park, 1:47:27. Buoyed by Tuesday's run, went and doubled up (kind of) tonight in the Park. A good bit colder (9 degrees) but enjoyable nonetheless. Also discovered a shop selling Barry's Tea - Mrs Killerz will be delighted when I return to Toronto with the stash.

Plan to do another 8 miler tomorrow all going well, then c.20 miles on Saturday, maybe more. No Camelpak with me tho - could have implications!

    11th-14th March

Thu: 8.16 miles in the Park. 58:04:81. Tiredness catching up on me + very cold.
Sat: Total washout - no running. nasty hangover aswell (unexpected drinks)
Sun: 7.42 miles in the Park 57:10:84. Very wet and windy again. Disappointing weekend's work.

After a week that promised so much, the weekend delivered so little. Maybe it was no harm after going high mileage the week before.

Total mileage this week: 38.02 miles
Total mileage this year: 413.82 miles

    15th-16th March

Mon: 14.7 miles in Central Park. Wet, windy, but went well. 1hr :41:52
Tue: Same again: 14.7 miles. Beautiful evening. Tiredness in the legs though - 1hr 50:18

Rest day Wednesday (Paddys Day) - no doubt will be mental in New York, and Toronto, where I fly back to in the evening.

29.4 miles nailed in Days 1 & 2 this week. Fingers crossed for the rest of it - planning on really pushing it out there on Saturday.

Happy Paddy's day to all :D

Hey. Ah, I miss running in Central Park. Jealous. Though obviously a bit different now compared to the height of summer when I was there I'd say. Discovering where the water fonts are was something of a revelation after about 3 or 4 painfully dehydrating runs in there.

Ya, i found a water font the first night, but it was either frozen, off or broken, so didnt rely on it after that. had no camelpak, so just carried a 500ml bottle with me.

I really felt that running with all the people around me, and having no traffic stops meant my times improved big time. As you'll know aswell, the circuit is tough enough.

Great place to run - I would say it was heavy going in summer though alrite?
