I currently have two Intel Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz processors. My motherboard is a fujitsu siemens GA-8I848PM. My question is can I install both processors onto the one motherboard. Extreme Noob here.

    Thanks in advance,

This motherboard only has one slot for a processor - so no.

Have you looked at the motherboard?

Nope not yet. Id prefer not to go near any of the components until i actually have a plan. I have picked out an upgrade kit, this one
    http://maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=345043
And I was wondering, If I just swapped in all this stuff in for my current components, would it work straight away or would I have to do anything else e.g drivers or installation.

    Thanks in advance,
    apc

if your running win xp i would recommend you remove any drivers for graphics or the board you have at mo as it can cause problems when you put the new parts in , the only other thing is if you go for it get some artic silver for the chip as the crap you get with that bundle is exactly that crap!!!! ( some sort of sticky white substance)
you do get a driver disk with that setup so no need to go looking for them after.

    and one quick question .....

are you planning on gaming with it, bec that card wont run anything and if thats your intention you could prob get better for very little more than that price. i'm tryin to remember but i think it costs around 192 euro for it in the blanchardstown store.

Thanks for your advice about the graphics card.I plan to do a small amount of gaming but nothing major. I was looking at the AMD Athlon II X4 620 Quad Core and the Radeon HD 4850. Are these two components compatible and what motherboard would you recommend? My motherboard budget is around 50 euro.

    Thanks in advance,
    apc

having a quick look think this is your chip

    http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=346584
which will be about 120 euro in maplin in dublin

    but you can get this
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=500141

for approx 5 euro more and far better chip

    your choice of card
    http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=227858

    or this one
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=485117

with the artic cooling fan for about the same price

and if you pick them up from blanchardstown outlet you dont pay postage

Dude, never pick out an upgrade kit based on the shinyness of the box and nothing else, that upgrade kit is absolute ****e!

Thanks for the recommendations. On Komplett I can get the

    PowerColor Radeon HD 4850 1GB GDDR3
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=485117

    AMD Phenom II X4 925 AM3
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=500141

    Samsung DVD±RW burner, SH-S223B
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=452346

All for €240. Not sure if this DVD drive is a good one so any advice is appreciated and I am still looking for a good motherboard. Id say I can stretch the motherboard budget to around €70.

P.S. Are all these products compatible with one another?

    Thanks in advance,
    apc

try one of these boards so

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=485694&view=detailed#ProductTabs

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=427376&view=detailed#ProductTabs

i would lean towards the asus but it only has single pci-e slot so no second card later but if your not plannin on going there its the one i would go for. comes with Hybrid CrossFireX support so should help boost preformance on the card :)

Thanks a bunch for all your help. Are there any othere components you would recommend getting/upgrading?

  • Registered Users Posts: 209 ✭✭noodletop

where do you start with that one.....lol

psu make sure its strong enough to cope with all the components in your machine, if its from a p4 machine i would say it might need an upgrade

and maybe your hdd the 1tb drives are not that pricey now so its another feature you could look at for upgrade, you could prob use the existing one for the os and a 1tb drive for storage etc.

i could keep going but i dont know what you have in your machine so im only guessing at the mo, unless you listed exact specs of machine and exact purpose of use after upgrade

ok thanks. one last thing. My sound card is a Realtek AC97 which apparently is an extremely old card. Would it be worth my while upgrading and if so to what card?

    Thanks in advance,
    apc

If you are using an old power supply unit from your old computer, it could fry the new components

So you would probably have to get a new PSU then.

You'll basically be building a whole new machine.

When building do everything properly and methodically, look it up on youtube, read stuff, etc.

Do not buy the stuff straight away but check here.. for instance is your old case ATX or mATX? what speed is your old ddr2 ram? etc, etc, etc

When you get a new motherboard it will have perfect onboard sound, v few people actually buy soundcards anymore
