We had Michael O Leary on the radio here ( ROI, RTE Radio 1 ) on Saturday for 50 minutes, giving an interview to Marian Finucane. He said that in the new year Ryanair would start processing "Mastercard Prepaid" on a "No Fees" basis

. Also said possibility of more European destinations from Knock and Kerry with the wind-down of Shannon.

P.S. You might be able to get this interview as a podcast on RTE in a few days time.

From 1st January the Visa Electron payment card will attract a €5 administration charge while MasterCard Prepaid will become the sole free from of payment on www.ryanair.com.

    Great news :)

EDIT: for me at least, not so great for anyone with a Visa Electron... "the MasterCard Prepaid card" - I presume this is equivalent to the Payzonemoney.ie card?

Good news definetly, would have saved myself around 60 quid on flights this year. Yeah payzone is the only Irish company that seem to offer them however they are having some funding problems at the minute according to this post.

IRISH LISTED e-payments group Payzone warned yesterday that shareholders could have the value of their holdings wiped out as part of a planned financial restructuring with its lenders.

The loss-making company, which is listed on the Aim market in London, issued the stark warning to the market yesterday after a sharp fall in its share price on Wednesday pushed the stock to below one penny

So I'm wondering is it a safe bet to get one right now or would your funds be safe if the worst happened to payzone?

There is also RubyCard (rubycard.ie) alongside Payzone offering prepaid Mastercards here. I forecast quite a few other operators popping up in the near future.

I use 3V VISA prepaid but the fees are huge there. Not only for buying stuff but also for transfering money between your vouchers inside your account.

Ryanair charges a €5 per person per flight booking charge unless you have a Visa Electron card. However they are stopping that from the end of the year (source), and instead you have to have a 'prepaid mastercard'. I used to use entropay.com to get a virtual visa electron card.

Does anyone know anything about this prepaid mastercard? How can I get one?

    Use Entropay..

    http://www.entropay.com/prepaid-mastercard.php

    or Payzone

    http://www.payzonemoney.ie/

Never had a Visa Electron, but with Payzone it cost 6€ to get a card and
and between €3.5 and €6 to reload the card and €3.5 a month after 3 month of inactivity....

It also appears that the friendly Payzone folks take a commission on each transaction too

    Loading your card:
    Loading Amount
    Fee
    €10 - €350 €3.50

    €351 - €500

    €5.95

    Shopping with your card:

    Transaction Type
    Fee
    Online 2.95% of purchase value

    Instore

    2.95% of purchase value

    Phone

    2.95% of purchase value

If you factor in the Loading Charge of €3.50 (Up to €350) then this looks to be a bit of an O Leary of a job....

One would wonder if Ryanair regard this as another "Promotion" which might indicate their willingness to end that when Payzone take-up reaches a level at which they (Ryanair) can generate extra revenue from it ?

in terms of the 3.50 a month for inactivity, as these are disposable cards i assume if you have used up your top up and they try to charge you, you just get a new one if its cheaper than paying the fees?with this card you can really save a fortune on Ryanair, especially if your booking a return trip for 4 people for example

Entropay also do the Prepaid Mastercard. The charges are the same as they are for their virtual Visa Electron card. Still cheaper than Payzonemoney.ie.

Entropay charge £4.99 for the physical card. Their Visa Electron card was virtual.

Any money you have in your Entropay account can be applied to the Prepaid Mastercard.

Folks, this thread has gone way off topic.

How/where to get the best deal on a virtual/prepay Mastercard is not a travel matter.
