Shannon predicted to rise by a metre as spring tides hit

    By Barry Duggan

    Saturday November 28 2009

A SEVERE flood warning remains in place this weekend across the lower section of the swollen Shannon River as the region braces itself for further widespread flooding.

It is predicted that water levels will rise on the Shannon River by a metre over the coming days due to a combination of an incoming spring tide and more downpours.

Such an increase could have a catastrophic effect for thousands of homeowners and businesses in the flood plains across Co Limerick and Co Clare.

Water levels on the lower Shannon rose by two inches yesterday morning, but remained stable throughout the day. Up to 50 homes remained unoccupied in the stricken areas of Clonlara, Shannon Banks, Montpelier and Castleconnell, but no other homes have been evacuated since Thursday.

A high tide is expected on Tuesday ( according to http://breakingnews.iol.ie/news/ireland/flooding-situation-stabilised-436221.html), I have noticed that the weather situation does not look particularly good for Tuesday also...

It looks like a band of moderate to heavy rain will be moving in over the west early Tuesday morning with continuous rainfall until after dark when it will begin to ease off:

And along the with the rain, there could also be some strong winds for the west and northwest on Tuesday morning.

Given the current flooding and high water levels in many areas I thought it might be a good idea to highlight this upcoming tide/weather situation.

Many parts of Kildare are flooded after all the rain last night and this morning. Here in Meath, some back roads are flooded (Ashbourne, Clonee) and the stream (becomes the Tolka) near us has burst its banks again. Not *that* much rain fell but the ground is so saturated that any new rain just flows off the fields onto roads etc.

At least the rain should begin to ease off soon for the east this evening. Tomorrow will be fairly dry but all areas will be getting rain Tuesday, heaviest in the west. Rest of the week looks unsettled with showers. :(

I know this thread is focused on Tuesday but just to give anyone in the area a heads up, following recent rain the ESB is now discharging water from the Leixlip dam and has issued flood warnings along the course of the River Liffey.

There is an error in my title, Tuesday is 1st not 2nd, if a mod can change that please. :o

I noticed another article this morning....

    ....

Meanwhile water levels in the Shannon Estuary will be under renewed scrutiny from tomorrow with high spring tides expected

Cleanup operations are expected to begin in Ballinasloe today after water levels fell significantly over the weekend

However areas surrounding the Shannon will remain on high alert.

"The tides are rising at the rate of a foot per day," said Chairman of the National Emergency Response Coordination Committee Sean Hogan. "We are heading for very high tides on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

"If you get extreme low pressure, which allows the sea to rise, and very heavy winds from the south-west which will drive water higher up the Shannon estuary than would normally be the case, then you could have a problem in some of the Limerick areas."

    http://breakingnews.iol.ie/news/ireland/water-levels-in-east-stabilise-as-shannon-still-closely-watched-436289.html

The current Met Eireann outlook also mentions..."Overall, rainfall amounts will be above normal, with a likelihood of renewed flooding."

Further rain expected in flood-hit areas

    30/11/2009 - 17:01:57

Emergency teams and flood rescue crews are on standby across Ireland as more rain is expected to hit the country tomorrow.

The floods in Kildare, Dublin, Meath and the Midlands overnight have now reached their peak and water levels are beginning to receed.

However, Limerick is being monitored carefully as high tides are due in the area which could affect water levels in the Shannon Estuary.

Chairman of the National Emergency Response Committee Sean Hogan said the rain expected tomorrow could cause further flood problems in areas where rivers have been saturated.

Limerick city council issues flood warning

    Published Date: 01 December 2009

BUSINESSES in Limerick City have been issued with an advisory by the city council warning of the risk of flooding in the coming days as the river rises with high tide.
An embankment has been built by the OPW at Hampstead Park in Shannon Banks to prevent further flooding in the area, and the pedestrian bridge in Castleconnell has been closed by Limerick County Council.

The decision by the ESB to reduce the level of water discharges from Parteen Weir, which had been incrementally increased throughout last week, has been welcomed.

Despite all the precautionary measures, however, the weather will play a major role in whether or not the city avoids flooding during high tide.
Alan Coughlan who is Shannon Estuary Harbour Master said the highest tides will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

He said that 6.8 metres marks the height of the tide but if
there is a further discharge of water combined with high wind slowing the water from flowing towards the sea, then the tide might rise to a higher level.

The City Manager, Tom Mackey, said the advisory sent to city businesses
was "purely a precautionary warning advising them to take precautionary action such as removing stock from basements that might be at risk of flooding.
