On the first Sunday of every month, myself and four other friends visit five different Dublin pubs and then write about our experiences.

Each month, one person in the group chooses the five pubs in advance and only he/she knows where we're going and the route we're taking. People tend to pick their personal favorite 2 or 3 pubs but also throw in a couple of places that they've always wanted to go into but never have.

In September, we visited The Long Hall, John Kehoe’s, The Dawson Lounge, Toner’s and Mulligan’s of Poolbeg Street.

In November, Davy Byrnes, The Dame Tavern, MacTurcaills, Doheny and Nesbitt's and The Bankers, Trinity Street, Dublin 2.

Wonderful idea, I look forward to reading it. Despite the pretentious places in the city I think Dubilin has amazing pubs.

Good idea but barely a word about the pubs themselves..whether they were expensive, busy, friendly, what was the drink like etc etc..plenty of history but no information or atmosphere to speak of.

Depends on the pubs sometimes, I did 6-10 (Daveys to the Bankers) and commented on things like the cost of a pint, the layout of a bar, and *very importantly* the telly (or lack of one, ideally) in a pub etc.
If you land somewhere like the Shelbourne, you end up in the history teritory. Its funny though, while I agree and would come at it from your angle, we do hear from people going "what are the most historic pubs in Dublin etc"

Balance I suppose, with time and all that.

Three very different approaches so far, personally I need to up my game as far as this angle of it goes. I think some of the pubs in the review above, like the first one, are taken in the way you mean (the barman, the atmosphere, the service, the pints.....) but other ones have such history that it can dominate.

It's not helped by the fact 1968 isn't a Guinness man himself :D

Anyway, I feel I have to:

    Favourite pint to date: Mulligans
Favourite pub to date that I drank in aleady: Brazen Head or Mulligans
Best new find for me: Frank Ryans
    Nicest barman: MacTurcaills
Sloppy one: Long Hall, maybe a bad day as I hear its normally very good.
My favourite pub I'm going to pop up to soon: Downeys, Ballyfermot.

I liked the entries, you covered a good range but I thought it was funny that you didn't do pubs located very close together but that's just me. Are all your visits going to be during the day or will you try friday or saturday night versions?

great idea and great execution. The first two reviews were the better I felt. The history thing gives it a good angle as well as it would be boring without it. although the last maybe had a bit too much. keep it up

I think we're quite set on the Sunday afternooon pub crawl. It suits people and the pubs are quiet.

Come on, you know you want to do a Flannerys/Coppers review. You could also do a commentary on pulling slappers, I can get you a webcam with night vision.

"Hourican’s, the pub that sits directly opposite. This is one of those forgotten pubs, one that thousands of people pass on their bus everyday, but very few venture into "

Would have to disagree with that! Houricans can be a pretty lively spot especially among the Longford contingent.
Pity you didnt make it to Hartigans, I have fond memories of that pub from my UCD days :)

Hope to god they dont do anything of the sort.
Think you should read accounts from here http://www.tuckermax.com/ instead

To be honest, we should do some of those spots (Not Coppers, but pubs drinkers like ourselves normally wouldn't touch) and review them in all honesty.

    New one: Downeys of Ballyfermot.

"I'll go in for one pint and review it"- Friday at 8pm.
3 pints Friday, 7 pints Sunday. Brilliant.

Frank Ryan's is on Queen Street, not Church Street. ;)

Only messing, but as a contrast to what people think of the traditional bar would it be an idea to go to bars in templebar or other superpubs?

Moosehead in Bernard Shaws :) though 3 for a tenner is a rip off, get 6 of them in my local offo (O'Neills, opposite Griffth College) for €8. Quality beer.

Probably the best crawl to read so far. Missed not having a little history of the pubs but enjoyed the describtion of what the pubs are actually like (barmen etc)
I'm not impressed with the non-guinness drinkers though, how did this happen!

Unfortunately, you missed Corrigans on Mount Pleasant Avenue a couple of doors down from Richmond Hill. A bit of a hidden gem imo.

For various reasons, we unfortunately messed up the last two months of the year but we're back on track now for 2011.

In February, we visited the Merchants Arch Bar, The Lotts, JJ Smyth's, The Swan Bar and Against The Grain. Review here.
