Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

New build restarting by itself. Oh dear~

    I just recently completed a self build and have been having some issues over the past 2 weeks. On a number of occasions my computer has restarted by itself. Autorestart upon system failure is disabled and I receive no error report/system dump or blue screen.

    This has happened twice while playing Ys [By no means graphics intensive, and it hasnt happened while playing the likes of bioshock. Just chance?], twice again while watching a movie [the movie was paused and I was afk one of these times] and once when left on overnight [lastnight]Now Ive been attempting to convert an .mkv file to .avi and I get a restart when it reaches about 3% completion. This happens every time.

    Im guessing overheating is the problem so Ive included a temp report, although I dont know if thats valid/sufficient info. Im worried this will/has already caused damage to my hardware and want to sort this out as soon as possible. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    [Maybe under powered? Ive been told by multiple source that the PSU is a reliable product and I shouldnt have any problems.]

    PS: My screen has also gone pink frequently. Not sure if this is related. A restart of my system shell always fixes this problem.

    It does indeed. Both are connected. I had issues initially with this so I know the GPU should be receiving enough power. Im not so sure how this could be related though, as the only consistant time the computer has restarted is when using the codec converter.

    Keep in mind the PC performs 100% 99% of the time. Its just those times I noted in my first post. Bar whenever I try to convert that video file, those restarts appeared to be random and I kept pushing them to the back of my mind since it had happened only a few times and seemed infrequent. But now its an issue as it seems to be related to my CPU in some way.. I was really looking forward to getting some vid editing done this afternoon but looks like thats not going to be possible. Gah

    I wonder do you just happen to have a faulty PSU. I would try another one just to eliminate that at least.

    Test the memory for errors by booting memtest, although memory errors will usually give blue screens, maybe You're not seeing them and it just reboots. Hard to figure this one as is sounds like a psu problem which are impossible to diagnose, a cpu, ram or gpu problem is easier to diagnose.

    Also, if this was a psu problem why would it be so inconsistent? Especially when playing games like Bioshock which would [Im guessing] draw on a good bit more power from the psu than the cpu would when converting a video.

    Unfortunately I am not made of money [Yet hehehe] and dont have another 600odd watt PSU laying around to just pop into my computer. Id like to make sure this is the problem before throwing away 150 euro to realise it was a CPU problem.
    Do you have any friends with similar spec PSU's that you could just maybe borrow. I wouldn't go buying anything either just yet but without replacing components, its a bit difficult to pin point the cause of such behavior.

    I could certainly ask around, but I doubt it. Are there no such programs that could run my cpu under some form of pressure test in the meantime? Im fairly convinced the problem is related to the cpu. Why else would converting a video have such an effect?

    You can run Prime95 to test Your cpu, let it run for a few hours. It won't detect psu faults though but it might eliminate your cpu. Keep an eye on Your temps with coretemp while its running as it will max all cores and create loads of heat

    Well in my experience, a CPU either works or not unless it is over heating.

    The problem is indeed to do with the CPU but it sounds like the CPU's power demands is an indirect cause of the real problem...the PSU. I would look into this first anyways but that's just me.

    I really, really cant imagine AVS Video Converter puts so much of a demand on my cpu. Urgh this is really reckin my head!!

    Video conversion is a very CPU intensive task.

    Run it again, this time take note of the temps You're getting after a min or 2 and at what temp it crashes. Coretemp takes its readings directly from a sensor on the cpu itself and is very accurate. Your pc should be able to run that test till morning without crashing, somethings wrong, either its not getting enough power or its overheating and shutting itself down to protect itself

    I was aware of this but never imagined it could be this intense! Im going to go ahead and run coretemp again while converting. I dont recall being able to feel as much heat from the converting as prime95 produced. /readysforarestart

    EDIT: Ill do this first then.

    I did like you said Pog. I ran a quicky on prime for 7mins without faults this time.

    After a little bit the temp stopped rising. Im guessing it coudl be a power issue?

    I could leave it on for a few hours grand but I would not be able to monitor it, so I wouldnt have any kind of record of the temps it reached.

    The cpu shouldn't shut itself down until it gets to around 100'c and is perfectly fine getting temps 70-80'c when running prime95, if You're seeing higher temps You know this is the problem, but if You're seeing reboots under these temps it kinda points in the direction of the psu, like we suspect

    Youre completely right. After running coretemp when converting I saw it restarted at 50ish temp.

    Do you suspect its a faulty psu, not a underpower issue? What level of damage could this cause if left unchecked?

    Well You've ruled out overheating

    Maybe an undervolting issue although I'd doubt it. I presume You've left all settings on default in the bios. Flash the motherboards bios to the latest one and see if it still happens, You'll get it on the manufacturers website, there should be a utility on the motherboard cd to install it. Newer bios will be better optimised for i5.

    I'm convinced its the psu but as I've said before psu is impossible to disagnose. OCZ are great for warranty rma's, they should accept it back without question when You contact them, I've dealt with them more than once.

    Edit, sorry, thought it was an OCZ, maybe You'd b better served buying a better brand psu. You bought all high grade parts and skimped on the psu. I can recommend Corsair

    PS: Im always very doubtful as this was my first build and I ran into no problems what so ever. Or so appears. Seems too good to be true. So just before I fly away, theres no chance of some cable or other not connected properly, right?

    EDIT: Ah. Ill give them a call first anyway. I dont really have the cash atm for another PSU. Ironically enough I had my eyes set on corsair but decided on that one due to them being out of stock -.- Came back to haunt me eh?
