It's not a list in order of quality or anything like that, it just happens to be the order the albums were listed by people (hence my joke about Reign in Blood). There's no Cradle of Filth on there, I guess they aren't that popular among Boardsies. I quite like Dusk and Her Embrace and would probably have it on a Top 100 of my own though :).

No question, Slayer have got to be in the top 10. Whether you like it or not Reign in Blood's influence is widespread in extreme music and on that alone merits a top place.

I didn't actually vote but one record that deserves a place in any top 100 list is The Exploited's Troops of Tomorrow album from 1982. A lot of you might go 'wtf?' but that record is a fooking milestone in the development of the thrash/hardcore sound. I reckon myself that Slayer, although they probably would never acknowledge it, owe a hugh debt to John Duncan of the Exploited for their guitar sound on Reign in Blood. Duncan, btw, is the bloke that Nirvana briefly hired as a second guitarist shortly before Kurt's death.

No List is complete without Thin Lizzy and Live and Dangerous either. A serious omission......

First off, major kudos to Jako for the outstanding and pain staking job on getting the information together, very well done.

Secondly.I think it works better if we do it in blocks of 10 so how about we examine the first 10,then the next 10 etc.It will keep things tidier.

    Any thoughts?

I thought that the only other guitarist they used was Pat Smear?

I don't deserve any credit, I just copied and pasted, it was all Jako's work. As for Between The Buried and Me, have a listen and see what you think.

x2 on Between the buried and me, never heard of them. The rest of the first 10 look ok.

Cant believe there is no Soundgarden, Rammstein or White Zombie in the entire list tho

So we could just discuss the albums that are in each block (while not thinking about the list) and then after we did that we could look at the list as a whole and discuss which albums we would have preferred to have in there and stuff.

Yeah, Pat Smear of The Germs but also Big John Duncan did a brief stint as second guitarist live/guitar tech sorta role around the time of the In Utero tour. He's a very underrated musician but who was ever going to take The Exploited too seriously?

How many votes did AC/DC get to only reach the top 80?

Don't worry it's not a ranking. People simply chose an album and it made it onto the list.

If anybody wants a good example of Between the Buried and Me then listen to the song Selkies
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19UZd_DKs2Q

The last half especially is a good example of this band. If you like that then get Colors, it's a brilliantly cohesive album. And if anybody thinks I'm liking it for the sake of being obscure, Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater said it was his favourite album of 2007, and it was no.1 of 2007 in Ultimate-guitar.com's This Year In Metal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭cedomination

I second Between The Buried and Me, definitely on of my favourite newer prog metal bands. Colours is also my favourite album by them followed by alaska.

I think the first 10 are fine, although I've never heard Queensryche so I can't comment on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,263 ✭✭✭ride-the-spiral

I'm about half and half with the first ten. Queensryche, Death, Metallica, Napalm Death and Machine Head are pretty good. Number of The Beast is my least favourite Iron Maiden album out of the ones I've heard and I don't really like Black Sabbath, Slayer or System.

And now I wonder how many posts before the stock classic metal elitist replies?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭Jako8

Out of the first 10 the ones I don't really like are Napalm Death and Death. I mean I do listen to Death's Scream Bloody Gore album from time to time but other than that...

I know people will probably hate me for that... :pac:

I can't comment on Between the Buried and Me but from what I've listened to (the links from here and a few youtube vids) they actually sound pretty good and I might buy colors if I see it somewhere.

    Insect warfare??????????? What the hell?

I had Holy Diver on there but I didn't read the rules and it was taken off (and rightly so).

It was in there, remember seeing that and Thunder and Lightening in there. Maybe it was removed because of the double post rule.

The fact that St. Anger was there. Awful, awful album imo, and it's rare to hear anything good ever said about it. I'm also not fond of Metallica getting 3 or 4 mentions, and some truly great bands didn't get one. I mean I understand MoP, most people have to listen to it at one stage I guess..

I'm also disappointed that Arch Enemy wasn't there, and I would have liked some more death oriented stuff, but that's just me :P

I'm not one to disrespect other's opinions, but I somehow doubt there are many who if they were to honestly recommend an album, they would recommend St. Anger above all else.

All of my nominations were the only ones for that band (Blind Guardian, Pain of Salvation and Ayreon) :o

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Mafia instead of blessed hellride?? Wierd

Leviathan is by far the best Mastodon album.

Individual Thought Patterns is the best Death album IMO.

    No Altars Of Madness?

Symphonies Of Sickness or Necrotism are arguably the best Carcass albums.

I'm told Amorphis were decent about 10-15 years ago, not really my thing, but i have that album "Silent Waters" and it's utter tosh.

Elements is my favourite Atheist but kudos for whoever suggested it.

i personally put down Mafia because i think its a great starting point for anyone who hasnt heard BLS before... whereas i dont believe they'd merit having 2 albums on there, especially if both Ozzy and Sabbath only have one
