It's a shame that A Vulgar Display of Power was one of the nominations that contravined the rules and didn't make it back in.

I don't rate Mafia at all, in fact I've really gone off BLS in the last few years. I still listen to their early stuff the odd time, and I think Sonic Brew or Stronger Than Death would be far more deserving of a place. Also, I think Remission and Leviathon are better than Crack The Skye.

Pantera on have one album up there??? Thats a very strange list.

Mafia instead of blessed hellride?? Wierd
I could have sworn that someone had Vulgar Display of Power in there (somewhere around the 20-30's. Thats why I put in Cowboys from Hell (my second favourite Pantera album).

I dont think the 10 album rule was clear enough. What diff would it have made by putting ones 10 albums in a row as opposed to one in each 10?Ive had Thin Lizzys Live and Dangerous removed, and as for Led Zeppelin IV.....Otherwise,was a great idea, well done!

I kind of feel that St.Anger is actually a must have album.

few albums have generated as much discussion as that really.

Yep but it was in there against the rules. I ****ed up twice (three times really :p).

You know, that's sad but true.

    Sorry.

There's no Cradle of Filth on there, I guess they aren't that popular among Boardsies. I quite like Dusk and Her Embrace and would probably have it on a Top 100 of my own though :).

'Dusk And Her Embrace' is a class album, and one of my absolute favourites along with 'The Principle of Evil'. It's a real shame that they have gone down hill so much in recent years.
Number of The Beast is my least favourite Iron Maiden album out of the ones I've heard and I don't really like Black Sabbath, Slayer or System.

And now I wonder how many posts before the stock classic metal elitist replies?

'Number of The Beast' is also my least favourite. I much prefer 'Killers, Piece of Mind, Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son'. I don't like System of a Down either, and as for Slayer I only love 'Show No Mercy' and 'Seasons in The Abyss'. I never really got into the other albums, although 'South of Heaven' does have a couple of class songs.

The fact that St. Anger was there. Awful, awful album imo, and it's rare to hear anything good ever said about it. I'm also not fond of Metallica getting 3 or 4 mentions, and some truly great bands didn't get one. I mean I understand MoP, most people have to listen to it at one stage I guess..

I'm also disappointed that Arch Enemy wasn't there, and I would have liked some more death oriented stuff, but that's just me :P

St Anger is indeed a horrible horrible album. I would've picked 'Ride The Lightening' instead. I also agree with you that something like 'Burning Bridges' by Arch Enemy shoud've been on the list.

I'm also very suprised that 'Wildhoney' by Tiamat, 'At The Heart of Winter' by Immortal, 'Enthrone Darkness Triumphant/Stormblast' by Dimmu Borgir, 'Anthems to The Welkin at Dusk' by Emperor, 'Colony/Whoracle' by In Flames, 'The Mantle' by Agalloch, 'The Final Chapter' by Hypocrisy and 'Eld' by Enslaved, 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' by Katatonia were not nominated.

On the bright side at least some of my favourites made it like Rush, Emperor, Mercyful Fate, Amorphis, Thin Lizzy and Paradise Lost made it.:D

Sonic Brew by BLS is brilliant. My favourite album by them. It's like before Zakk Wylde was all like "Urg, I want to be a big hairy biker."

Great, great songs on it. Would gladly see it replace Mafia.

Pantera are way too far down that list guys. And where the heck is Vulgar Display of Power?! What about rules now?

Nirvana?! It's a must have album but not metal... same for Pearl Jam

And I'd love to see more old skool, hair and glam metal in there. Where are KISS?! Alice Cooper barely scrapes in. :(

Deep Purple no where to be seen and they are pioneers of metal along with Led Zeppelin, who are at number 82?!

    No Slipknot either, no KoRn.

Bloody St. Anger!! And it's ahead of AJFL?

    This list is crazy.

Isn't that a double negative meaning that it actually is in order? Or does the "no" make it a triple negative?

Yea thanks, I just saw that.. Still took 81 people and 4 METALLICA albums before someone thought "hmm.. Led Zeppelin are pretty good." I don't understand this forum at times!! :D

I see that Emperor's in there, but nothing from Immortal?

I had Led Zeppelin IV in there but was removed because of "The Rules"

Yea I don't get the rules at all. If it's not in order then why can't there be 2 albums in a 10 spot (heh!) Also, why was Vulgar Display removed? Vote?

Were random albums just suggested by users and placed in despite others opinions?

'Twas indeed. Welcome change I say. I'm sick of seeing Greatest Metal Albums lists in which people seem to think metal stopped in 1995 or so.

Yet there are 4 Metallica albums, 4 Iron Maidens and 3 Slayer albums...

    Surprise surprise.

I think "the rules" meant any poster could only post one album in each 10.i.e. Put 1 album in 1-10,another in 11-20 etc etc... max 10 albums per poster.Dont see what diff this would have made.I posted 3 albums in about 5, so 2 were removed. These happened to be Live an Dangerous and Led Zep IV. At least Diamond Head was left :D:D:D

Pretty much. I think the idea was to 'recommend' albums and for us to discuss the list we formed here.

when did this happen? how did this list get made?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,526 ✭✭✭brendansmith

i personally put down Mafia because i think its a great starting point for anyone who hasnt heard BLS before...

I disagree, BLS are not exactly Prog metal. There are no layers to their sound. They are a fast burner.

I loved BH the moment I heard it and still listen to songs off it today. I though it was the one BLS album they got right.

    Exactly.

What was this? And how come great albums are left out because people 'broke the rules'?

Well i personally wanted to put down bands/albums from all spectrims of metal that i think deserved a listen, so my other choices Images and Words/6 Degrees of Inner Turbulance by Dream Theater.. Lateralus by Tool
Powerslave by Maiden, British Steel by Priest and Mafia, again i believe these are deserving of places compared to some of the other random sh1te on here.. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Thin Lizzy are great bands but were never metal..

Yeah I think people get confused because its the rock/metal forum.

it says it in the title, its hardly quantum physics

    Where do I start, the following bands should not be on that list (non-metal bands);

    Guns n Roses
    Dream Theater
    Alice Cooper
    Alice in Chains
    Nince Inch Nails

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti should be out and replaced by Led Zeppelin II (which practically invented metal)

Black Sabbath - Paranoid should be out and replaced with Technical Ecstasy.

SOAD - Toxicity should be out and replaced by the self-titled first album.

Both Slipknots first album and The Subliminal Verses should be there are some of the most innovative metal albums of the last decade.

Deep Purple need to be in there at least once.

Would not agree with that at all

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test
