In my humble opinion, Metal is whatever it wants to be.. simple as that

Wow,I couldnt have envisioned such a glorious cop out, thank you for proving my point that you dont have a clue and simply dislike Nirvana.

    It's quite simple;

Thin Lizzy were a hard rock (metal evolved from hard rock) band who influenced hundreds of Metal bands and were a pioneer of the sound.

Nirvana were a grunge band, they influenced NO metal band

So TL were a hard rock band then.

    That means they werent metal.

So that means they should be stricken from the list I take it?

I dont want to see TL taken off the list because they were undoubtably an influential band. They inspired masses of people to pick up guitars or drum sticks and start writing music and evolving the sound of it.

Kinda like Nirvana if you take the blinkers off,no?

    ;)

I like Nirvana a lot.. But if it wasn't them who popularised grunge and supposedly made the way for other types of metal (even though they practically killed metal) it would have been a similar sounding band of that style like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains or Soundgarden.

The only reason Nirvana got SO popular was because they released a (self-confessed) pop choon in the form of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Which face it, EVERYONE can listen and rock out to. It's even played at weddings along side the Grease Megamix.

How about we change the list name to 100 best ROCK AND METAL albums. Cos this is the Rock and Metal forum. And we're all rock and metal fans. All in favour say I. :D

(I'll even put the Killers forward for a position on it. Hahah)

Thin Lizzy played metal before metal even existed, same with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, without these bands metal would not be like it is today.

Influencing people to pick up guitars and drums is not the same as influencing people who go on to make metal music and this is a distinction you are clearly failing to see.

I don't dislike Nirvana but they certainly don't belong in a list of top 100 metal bands, or even top 100 bands who influenced metal or even top 100 influential bands for that matter.

First things first how you can compare Nirvana to Thin Lizzy is ridiculous, Thin Lizzy inspired the sound of Metal, everyone one from Metallica/Judas Priest/ Iron Maiden/Guns N Roses sight them as major influences in they're sound..

who have Nirvana inspired?? The Vines/Strokes and all those no talent hacks who learned to play 3 chords from Kurt Cobain, and not forgetting all those emo kids who learned directly from him that "i hate myself and i want to die"

secondly regarding my post.. I dont have a clue?? what did you want a literal translation of what Heavy metal is?? i gave you what in my opinion what its is which is something that is not judged by Music critics/mtv or whoever but is a music defined by its loyal fans

but heres a wikipedia translation for you, since that it seems is what you want

Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes. New York Times critic Jon Pareles writes, "In the taxonomy of popular music, heavy metal is a major subspecies of hard-rock—the breed with less syncopation, less blues, more showmanship and more brute force." typical band lineup includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist , and a singer, who may or may not be an instrumentalist. Keyboard instruments are sometimes used to enhance the fullness of the sound. a "trifecta of speed, power, and precision".

    @ Lil Kitten - I. :)

@ Kaiser - I take your points on board but we are going to have to agree to disagree on Nirvanas importance.:)

@ Walter - Anyone can copy and past from Wiki. You clearly have a vision of what is and isnt metal,I was asking what that was.Stating that metal is what ever it wants to be is as obtuse an answer as you could possibly give.If metal can be what ever it wants to be,why couldnt Nirvana be put under the overall metal umbrella?I might sound pedantic on this but Im genuinely curious as to what you mean.

All those bands mention 4 times and not 1 mention of Rammstein?? Pitiful! This poll is obviously flawed :D

@ johnnycrash - that first list contains such dubious delights as Hammerfall and Twisted Sister so you will forgive me if I dont have too much faith in it.
    ;)
The second one is a band list from the 60s + 70s.
Way to copy and paste links.

@ walter - To me metal is music that is primarily guitar + drum driven, its loud, its aggressive, its anti social, your parents usually hate it,its not accepted by the populace in general and the majority of people that hear it think its just noise. It comes in many shapes and forms, from punk like Black Flag to hardcore like the Cro-Mags to death metal like Cannibal Corpse to math-core like The Dillinger Escape Plan and countless other other blends/off shoots inbetween.Thats the beauty of metal as an overall genre, there are endless tendrils that branch off using different sounds, tempos and styles and new bands with unique approaches are appearing every day.Its not mainstream and it doesnt get much exposure outside of specialist magazines or TV channels.

you see to me, this just sounds like your describing heavy music in general, you've metioned everything from hardcore punk to matchcore and everything inbetween.. which is obviously were we differ as i see metal being a genre defined by the people who listen to it, go to gigs, and have generally support it during the countless musical fads that have happened since its inception in the 1960s.. As far as im concerned Metal isn't just music its a lifestyle and thats what keeps it going no matter what the flavour of the month is.. whether it was nu metal, or NWOAHM or thrash or whatever, but i personally do see the lines between Punk, Metal, Grunge etc etc they are completely seperate musical styles with differant fan bases, although they may come from similar starting points

I never said they wernt metal.

If you look at the wiki page about metal in the 90s,its stated that grunge is under the category alternative metal by the way.

Wiki Nirvana while your at it. Not one mention of metal in the intro.

To be honest lads, everyone has their own opinion as to what "Metal" is. For me, Nirvana are NOT nor ever were metal. I don't like Nirvana at all but that's my choice. Metal is the likes of 5FDP, Metallica, Rammstein, Devildriver etc. Do Nirvana fit that category? I think not :)

Each to their own, but metal to me is Iron Maiden, Saxon, Emperor, Paradise Lost, Venom, Bathory, Judas Priest, Amorphis, Immortal, Faith No More, Hypocrisy etc.;)

I also can't believe that the best albums by Bathory, Tiamat, Agalloch, Saxon, Immortal/I, In The Woods, Old Cradle of Filth, Nokturnal Mortum, Anathema and Darkthrone were not on this list.
