Why not just slap an extra E5 on the price of a packet of cigarettes ? 27%of the population smoke, so if even 20% of them buy a packet a day thats an extra..... one billion six hundred eighty million extra money a year ? Sure some will cut down but Im betting that at least a Billion a year could be made

Excise duty on cigaretes is "€160.57 per thousand together with an amount equal to 17.92 per cent of the price at which the cigarettes are sold by retail" (slightly out of date figures, gone up a bit by now)

If this guy brings in just 20 cartons (200 boxes) in his suitcases every week thats a loss to the exchequer of around €46,000 per annum (that's just the excise duty, not the VAT). If he's selling these at 1/2 price, say €4 a box, that's €40k p/a.

But that's OK, 'cos he's not a kiddly fiddler:mad:
