Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Champions League is what you call an International Competition, as is the World Cup. It involves teams from MORE THAN ONE country. The English Premier League does not fall under the definition of an International League.

Cant wait until Cardiff City get into the Premier League so, will it be considered an international league then?

Well not really, Wales is not a country, its part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.:D

Try telling that to the Welsh :o No, I get your point though from above, good posts. I wouldnt consider the EPL to be an international league but would consider it to have international appeal as so many different nations are represeneted through out all the teams.

Same could be said about the German, Dutch and French leagues aswell, yet you dont see millions of foreigners forming life-long bonds to clubs in those leagues.

To be honest, the only time I have heard people call the Premiership an "International League" is around the time they have finished ranting about how much they hate the English and someone points out that they are a Liverpool fan and that Gerrard is, indeed, English. I think it is just dealing with guilt/hypocrisy or something like that.

The big four are exceptions, they may have huge international support, but the other 16 teams do not. Bolton, Burnley, Wigan, Portsmouth, Hull, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers, the fans of these clubs generally go to games on a number 365 bus, not flight FR365.

The Premiership is no more an International league than the Spanish or Italian leagues are.

No, your right, I think that the majority of peopel in Ireland that support an EPL club or any other club from a different league has done so more from friends/family/relations with the place and the clubs appeal and success.

There is also nations in Africa and Asia that have storng football links with there domestic leagues and support and watch a team in the EPL, I think its part of life.

Even in the LoI you will get dual supporting fans, I can say Ive never being to a Cork City game and the reasons would be that my family never went before me and my friends dont go either, I wouldnt bash anybody that went to a LoI game, if thats the team you support then support them through thick and thin.

but the other 16 teams do not. Bolton, Burnley, Wigan, Portsmouth, Hull, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers,

Not, you might add, teams that represent anything to most Irish supporters of the EPL other than boring cannon fodder or the statistically-remote chance of a slip-up.

For all intents and purposes, the EPL is an appetizer for the eventual anticipated feast of a European Mega-League.

The standard is not ****, you are just as likely to see a good game in the LOI than you are in the EPL

You have Anfield as your location and "Team Jedward for life" as your sig and you expect to be taken seriously!

LOL, the LOI is actually more international than the PL. Teams from 2 differnt soverign states as opposed to 1.

Does any other League in the world compare to the EPL? Even to that fact not many leagues in the world get as low attendences as the LoI per capita.

Does any other League in the world compare to the EPL? .

Exactly, so if you love football you want to watch the best at it, this is why people prefer to support the clubs accross the water and not here.

Yeh but i get to watch Liverpool play United and Chelsea etc who are at the moment two of the best teams in Europe. So i'm watching far better players than we see in the League of Ireland.

Supporting a football isn't what is just on the pitch, it's about everything around it. Henceif you don't go to games you can't really say you're a fan of the club.

Also take note of my second point. I'll use an example, look at the Portuguese and Spainish leagues, Spainish is a much better quality, yet the liks of Porto, etc... have no problem filling their stadium, even though Barca are a much better club.

Guess what.Millions of people in countries around the world enjoy their own leagues without feeling the need to compare it to the EPL which of course the vast majority of leagues are inferior to.

If it was all about supporting the "best" as you say then Irish Golf fans would shout for Woods over Harrington.

Irish Athletics fans would shout for LeShawn Merritt over David Gillick

Irish Rugby fans would be gunning for the All Blacks over Ireland.

Your arguments are weak at best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭Dodgykeeper

I have no problem with Irish people supporting English/Scottish clubs and going over to watch games, What I have a problem is with ppl watching on the tv then ringing in the Radio Shows or talking to their friends about how "WE" did at the weekend or how Rafa has to go befrore "WE" can move on etc.

Thats like my Mrs watching Corrie and then saying "WE" went to the Rovers last night, no you didnt , Fizz and Kirk went, you sat at home on the sofa watching them!

You're not getting my point, if there was an irish league with just irish players who werent great and then there was a league over in england with all the best golfers in the world, which one would you prefer to watch. yeh if there was an irish player in that league you'd support him but you'd be watching him against the best!!!
Well if you're paralyzed I don't think many would be saying that. The majority of Irish wouldn't be paralyzed and therefore shouldn't have a bother getting a on plane. Buying a jersey, watching it on tv, etc... doesn't make you a fan, everyone can do that.

YOu never answered my other question:

Did you support Liverpool during the 90's when they were not anywhere close to the best in England, a league which in turn was nowhere near the best in Europe at the time?

If the English Premiership went back to where it was in the 1990's (when its national champions would get hammered away to the Swedish Champs) would you stop following Liverpool then as they are no longer "the best"!?

LOL at your golf comment by the way!

Bandwagonism then? I can understand people being bred into following a certain team but looking at the league and just choosing a team with the best players is a bit sad tbh.

I think Arsenal play the best football in the league, I have no emotional attachment to them but I enjoy watching the way they pass the ball. I'm a fan of their style of football but that doesn't give me the right to compare myself to people who'd bleed Arsenal if you cut them open, nor would I want to.

If you read back over my post that you quoted there you'll see I make a distinction between bandwagonism and being brought up following a team. As well as this, the former would probably have more numbers than the latter. I know an unholy amount of people guilty of EPL bandwagonism.
