I got banned from askaboutmoney.com for bumping a post. They deleted my bump, locked the tread, and banned me. Maybe they're not as strict on boards.ie:

Aldi have magnolias for 9.99.

Are they easy to grow?

it is good value, lovely plant. But they dont do much for the rest of the year once they have flowered

Also they can be frost damaged

Actually I saw them today and they are tiny.
Might be worth checking out garden centres for something a bit more mature

I am getting one today. great value. I have seen them in garden centres for 30 quid for a similar size

Trick is to get there as early as possible on the day they go on sale. Pick the best specimens.

Yeah, I got one any way. I'll just have to plant it and forget about it from the point of few of seeing any flowers for probably 4 or 5 years.

I'd like a more mature one but can't afford it at the moment

Various flowering cherrys\almond and

10 varieties but they only show 4 on website :)

Prunus 'Amanogawa
A very charming flowering cherry which is a column of fragrant soft Pink flowers in April and May. Particularly recommended where space is limited
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/plant?plantid=5318

Prunus avium (Wild Cherry)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/gardenerscorner/trees/wild_cherry.shtml

prunus triloba (the one I want!)
http://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/prunus-triloba/877.html

The double flowering cherry-almond blooms in April and May, it originates from the far east where it is famed as a herald of Spring.

It is a dwarf compact tree that can grow upto 3 metres (10ft) tall, but is easily maintained at half that height if required.

The tree also displays outstanding yellow-bronze autumn colour.

The medium-green leaves of this flowering tree have an elongated oval shape, and finely toothed edges, providing light dappled shade in the summer months to anything below.

The flowering cherry-almond is ideal in the garden or near the house.

Planted in a row, an avenue of trees consisting of the flowering cherry-almond will create an attractive and impressive border along a path, patio or property line.

Not only will this rustic plant withstand the toughest of winters but it is also gifted with a resistance to most pests and diseases.

Sorbus aucuparia

http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/plant?plantid=1853

Root balled 2-year-old trees.
• Choose from 10 varieties
• Height: 1.2m (minimum)

BTW, pretty much all these trees Ive seen for at least €35 euros in a garden centre and not much bigger
€6 euro got to be worth a punt

I was in aldi this evening, hadn't room for trees though. I'm going back for a couple tomorrow. There didn't seem to be 10 varieties though. I seen the ones mentioned above plus silver birch. I got a mountain ash and a silver birch last year and they are both doing very well.

• Registered Users Posts: 246 ✭✭peadar76

Ah, I see mounain ash is mentioned above - Sorbus aucuparia. I didn't realise that was the proper name

bought 3 bundles of 10 hawthorn bareroots in lidl last saturday . each bundle was reduced down to 2 euro 49 cents from the original 4 euro per bundle . they are only 16 inches tall from tip to root but they are all budding and starting to leaf up . really only bought them for the craic just to see if they do actually grow well so i will wait and see how they get on and how much growth they put on over the comming months .

Tesco in Ballybrack have veg plug packs for lettuce and cabbage (10 plants) reduced to 28c. Couldn't resist getting a headstart at that price! :)
