Yes, but you can let your opinions float away at NUI Maynooth, I hear. Even if you got them out of a paper bag thrown off the back of a speeding motorbike.

I hear NUIM are hiring Joey Gambino to lecture in law enforcement.

both of you are now completely failing to see the issue and are being completely ridiculous. This thread had now become somewhat of a joke

what was presented to the tribunal was presented by bertie ahern, not by FF. Nor do i stand by anything he said, I like many of you think that he is in fact guilty, but i also see the fact that students in the course in question stand to gain something from him being a lecturer on the panel. end of.

So he's guilty in your opinion and hence you believe he's a criminal. So you believe a criminal should be allowed lecture in NUIM? What if the crime was less white collar? You wouldn't be so enthusiastic then I'd imagine.

i believe he should be allowed to lecture so long as people stand to gain something from it. Bertie Ahern is innocent until proven guilty, need I remind you that, regardless of what any of us think, in the eyes of the state he remains innocent and ergo, not a criminal....yet.

This is not a matter of criminal law, as you well know. This is a question of suitability, where a far lower burden of proof applies.

Who do I think I am? Well, I'm someone who has worked all his life, raised a family and a bit of an empty vessel with an extra large foghorn. :(

Being lambasted for your political beliefs... well these days it's going to be a given.

takeninsanity, give it a rest. There is absolutely no point in arguing these silly "nothings". Having an opinion of someone because of their political party, is plain silly. I'm sure we can all agree with that.

And taken insanity made that point(in his first post), that is all

    woop woop ;)

I just fyp, Dissin the current gov seems to be the thing to do right now. Fianna Gael in gov today the same people would be giving out about them! simple as

Labeling someone for their political beliefs is highly ignorant, I changed the quote because it was what it sounded like to me(and most people i'm sure)

I was just on your website there and noticed in a big heading, "Now 20% more offensive"...
Ooooooook, just wondering how you can consider yourself offensive. Do you like write something down then think "Woah, I am so offended?" lol

I'm gonna leave with your own words(from your website),

"You know what’s great about paying for your own site? It’s this: you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone. If I don’t want stupid, miserable, depressing, annoying bastards leaving comments on my site, I just ban them.

Isn’t that great? God, I love oppressing idiots."

sorry for being dragged off topic, this is my last post on Bock

Everyone knows that FG in government would be the same. The parties are ideologically identical and are only seperated by the civil war issue. What we need is a strong left in this country. Something the Celtic Tiger and the resulting apathy has killed off completely :(

Standard FF diversionary tactics. Play the man.

I notice that, just like Dev, you know what the people think. and feel entitled to speak for them.

Did you forget that the thread is about Bertie Ahern or would you prefer to distract attention from the fact that NUIM is offering a professorship to the man who presided over an unprecedented era of sleaze in our country and who oversaw the destruction of our economy? Who failed to answer satisfactorily the questions of the tribunal.

The man who paid €1.25 billion of public funds to cover the costs of the clerical child abusers while letting the religious orders away with little or no cost.

This is the individual who is to lecture on ethics.

Way to go, Maynooth!! But wait, isn't that the same place where the clergy ... Oops!

As regards Robert Gallavan being a Fianna Fáil member, since when has it been common place to make somebody declare their political affiliations. Would you ask the same of certain sociology lecturers who are members of various left wing parties, some having even served as public representatives for them? I don't see anyone barging down their doors

Imagine somebody proposed we give an ex leader of the Socialist Workers Party an Honorary Position, and didn't tell Academic Council that they themselves were also a member of the Socialist Workers Party.

Galavan told the Daily Mail he thinks this is a "great idea", of course he would.

what do you think of the Honorary Position? Do you not see how that, and not Bertie 'lecturing', is the key issue of complaint here?

As for Ógra Fianna Fail in Maynooth being active  Where? I haven't seen so much as a public talk. Other University branches seem alive enough. I don't need to justify FEEs existence on the back of forms, I think on the back of the sit-ins (Department of Finance, Paul Gogarty..) and the actions we've taken (The solidarity picket, Bertie demo etc.) along with bringing this issue to nationwide attention, we've done quite well. Getting into a row with Ógra makes them look like more of a force in the place than they are. I think their piece in the spoke, the day of the 250+ march, was their first public showing at all this year?

I look forward to proof you still exist. I'm a politco at heart. All politics on campus is good, we're not exactly "at war" with Fianna Fail, god Maynooths so small I even end up drinking with Fine Gael ;)
Everyone knows that FG in government would be the same. The parties are ideologically identical and are only seperated by the civil war issue.

My family in the West were big Fianna Failers, 'Take It Down From The Mast Free State Traitors' and all that. Me and Bertie have it in our blood we do...

Bertie lecturing on Ethics... Protesters have a point

Bertie lecturing on Conflict Resolution... Protesters really don't

Bertie lecturing on Conflict Resolution... Protesters really don't

Bertie lecturing on Conflict Resolution without an Honorary Professorship that was proposed by a member of staff who is also a member of Fianna Fail?

The awarding of the position is the issue, it betlittles Honorary Professorships given to others by other insititutions.

Plus, to see The Phoenix etc. ripping the piss out of the place over the Honorary Professorship wasn't nice for anyone. Like Haughey, there are particular areas Bertie knows plenty about. Like Haughey, there are massive questions over his head.

If it was merely guest lectures, it'd be a different issue at this stage.

The HONORARY POSITION will, in my opinion, come back to haunt NUI Maynooth.

Actually, only noticed the Ógra member is a new account and seems to have only posted here, so just to put the offer back on the table....

Feel free to email FEE at feemaynooth@gmail.com , or mail our Facebook page (FEE Maynooth) and if you want we can arrange a good civil public debate on the issue.

I'm sure the Lnd, or Politics and Sociology, would love to host it.

This thread is now a month old, a good debate on the issue would be most welcome from all corners I'd expect.

    Bertie is Back.
Oh yes the guy that everyone loves to hate!

He's the next guest on "The Meaning of Life" with Gay Byrne, might give everyone a chance to take a step back and realise that he's just human like everyone else.
It's on on Sunday at 10.30pm
(Great show btw, here's a link to Gabriel Byrne's interview. It's the pick of the bunch so far http://www.rte.ie/player/#v=1064289)

There's no disputing that he's human, just the fact that he's not a very moralistic one.

Will he be talking about how he prays to Jaysis every day and how he donates regularly to the church collection on this show? I feel ill.

I don't think it would. From where I am standing FEE change there gripe every couple of days.

Bertie was Taoiseach of the government that wanted to introduce fees so we don't want him at Maynooth
We don't mind Bertie being at Maynooth but not with an honourary position
We don't want Bertie being recommened by someone from Fianna Fail.

As far as I am concerned who cares who recommended him for the position? I'm sorry but I fail to see the issue. Does the fact that Robert Galavan is a member of Fianna Fail impact in anyway the suitability for Bertie to be giving these lectures or an honourary professorship. Of course it doesn't. Yes Galavan shold have mentioned it but it does not actually provide any reason as to (a) why Bertie should be allowed lecture here or (b) why he should/should not be given an honourary title. This country has given honours to many dubioous characters over the years to people who had far weaker cases against them and nobody complained. At the end of the day the only thing that should matter is what he can contribute to lectures on conflict resolution.

I am a student of conflict resolution and I would love to hear Bertie's views on the matter. As it stands it is unlikely that I will get this to do so because other people have concerns over his finances. Yes I disapprove of what he did but I also respect what he did and think that his contributions should be honoured. You can honour a man for one thing wihtout supporting the rest. If I brought peace to the Middle East tomorrow and was then arrested for tax evasion would that lessen the achievement?

Why should financial discrepancies prevent him from getting an honourary title in something completely unrelated. If it were the finance department then sure you'd have every reason to complain but in the meantime all that this is doing is pandering to anti-government sentiment to the detriment of students who could benefit greatly from this move.

I am not a member of Fianna Fail nor do I vote by party loyalty so I can't say I am a Fianna Fail voter but I not only find your attitude towards the poster from Ogra to be disrespectful but also find it hard to take any "politico" seriously when they act as such.
