Talk about a successful family! Even the one son who didn't make it in football (for medical reasons) has a net worth of $15m from energy trading.

Up later than I should be with an early start tomorrow, but that was worth it.

Especially when one of the first NFL players I grew to support when I started watching the game was Eli.

Wonder will a family like that ever be seen again in the NFL.

    I'd say so, yeah.

Don't forget that CMIII's uncle was arguably the best lineman of all time (played every position at a Pro Bowl level, as best I know), while his dad was a 4 time Pro Bowler and 3 time all pro and his dad also played a few years for the 49ers. His brother has played for the Eagles for three years now (albeit as a far more peripheral player), another cousin played for the Titans for 2-3 years while he had two more cousins (Jake and Mike) playing for Texas A&M right now -- I'd bet they at the very least make the league as UDFAs at the least. Let's not forget that CMIII likely only ever got to play college football on the back of his families' success... and look at how that turned out for him!

I've often though Archie Manning is a seriously classic case of revisionism. Good QB, but it's got blow out of proportion in the wake of Peyton and Eli's successes. Here's his career stats - http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MannAr00.htm . Bad team or not (and they were), that's not anything past decent-for-his-era by the numbers.

Bruce Matthews was a 14 time pro-bowler (@ guard & centre) & was a 1st ballot hall of famer in 2007. Played 19 years in total & holds record for mist consecutive starts by a lineman

Jake will probably go in the top 5 in the upcoming draft. He has the size & skills to be an all-pro LT.

Mike was a 4 star recruit to A&M & saw action in his freshman season at A&M. Doesn't have Jake's size to play tackle but looks a very good centre in the making.

I agree but he's a college football hof'er and made a 13 year career at sh! tty teams in an era when playing QB was properly tough. Not to be sniffed at.

Ah yeah, I'm not saying he was awful or anything, but it just irritates me when the camera pans to him at one of his son's games and the commentators start hammering on as if he should be in the ball of fame. Now his testicles on the other hand...

There's also the Longs. Howie was on the 1980s all decade team, 5 time all pro, 8 time pro bowler and a crucial part of the 1983 Superbowl winning Raiders. His son Chris went 2nd overall, has been on a poor Rams team much of his career but is an important part of their quality defensive line with 40-odd sacks in the last 3.5 seasons. And the other son Kyle went in the first round this year and has been an important part of the Bears finally looking semi-decent on their offensive line.

The Matthews are just silly at this point though:
Clay, Sr - LB - 4 years with the 49ers.
Clay, Jr - LB - 18 year career (I think the longest of any LB ever), 4 time Pro Bowl, 3 time All Pro.
Bruce - OL - 18 year career, most games played on OL (played ever position), 14 time Pro Bowl, 10 time All Pro, 1990s all decade team.
Clay, III - LB - 4 time pro bowl, 3 time All Pro, NFC DPotY 2010, the only Matthews with a SB ring, still just 27.
Kevin - OT - UDFA who didn't quite make it in the league, played 17 games for the Titans.
Casey - 4th round pick, very peripheral but has had 3 years with the Eagles.
Jake - OT - projected top 5 overall pick by HigginsJ (I don't get to watch much NCAA).
Mike - C - projected 'very good' by HigginsJ, so maybe high-to-mid rounds.

Clay Jr, Clay III and Bruce were all first rounders which Jake is apparently going to imminently become the fourth of. Those three hold 16 All Pros between them and counting, which Clay III is only going to add to, and maybe Jake/Mike also. Not bad from their beginnings - Clay Sr was drafted in the 25th round! He's still knocking about too as per Wiki, at 85, to see all the success his penis has brought.

The Colquitt family deserves respect. Craig Colquitt was a punter from 78 to 87 for Colts & Steelers, his brother punted for Seahawks in 85 & now Craigs 2 sons are punters. Dustin (a pro-bowler last year) is with the Chiefs since 05 & Britton is punter for Broncos since 09.

    Punters are people too!!

Does anyone want to try and predict any major off season moves?

I think Cutler will leave the Bears
Oddly enough there are plenty of topics of titans boards about it as he has a soft spot for Nashville as went to college there, he has a house that he spends a good chunk of the off season in.

Probably more disappointment with Locker getting injured again, but I wouldnt say no.

He'd expect huge money and with quite a few guys needing re-signing over the next couple of years i'm not sure we could afford him and keep up our level of play (especially on defense)

Would Cutler want to leave with Marshall, Forte & Jeffrey in place. Improving O-line too.

Has it all gone quite on the Steelers and Big Ben looking for a trade front?

Early days I know, but would be strange seeing him with another team.

Apparently Big Ben apologised to the rooney's and said it wasn't him or his people that put the rumors out there and said he'd retire first

Not surprised to hear that. Ben leaving the Steelers is nonsensical really and certainly one of the more malicious rumors of recent times.

Aye I agree, at the same time I think if someone offered retarded money, he might just do it. But only if the steelers told him he wasn't wanted there first

    Feckin' punters... :D

I never understood the grief that ST players get in the NFL - returners tend to get better treatment and can be 'the hero' at times (Hester, Cribbs, Dante Hall a few years back) but kickers good as never get the credit they deserve. Score a game winning 55 yard FG? Credit goes to the QB for getting the field position... miss it (even in horrible conditions) and the blame is all on you. Punters can make a big difference too, Masthay has been a big help to the Packers since getting drafted as one example. The same for gunners and blockers - the Bills do NOT make all four of those Superbowls without Steve Tasker, who Marv Levy even considered possibly his most important player. Yet he's not in the HOF, and it's a farce.

I reckon ST is about 15-20% of the game, there's a reason that the more successful teams are usually at least competent at it. It should be harder to get in the HOF playing special teams, but not impossible - Tasker, Hester and Lechler (when they are done), Morten Anderson, Ray Guy and Brian Mitchell (second most yards of all time behind only Jerry Rice) not getting in is as I said, a farce.

There's a few kickers in, but they all are from an era where they also played other positions - George Blanda, Lou Groza, Paul Hornung, Don Hutson (maybe the greatest player of all time), Bobby Lane, etc. No punting specialists. No return specialists (Bobby Mitchell and Deion Sanders were great, but they are really there for there play at WR and CB). No gunners or blockers. The one exception is Jan Stenerud oddly enough, given that he was arguably not even the best of his era or in Chiefs history where he spent most of his career - he is the only specialist.

No chance Ben leaves the Steelers and no chance they don't want him around in my opinion.

Cutler is overrated but decent enough. He's 30 so it's safe to say he won't be getting any better, but likely won't be getting any worse for a good 4-6 years. The Cardinals might do well to take a look at him also and Fitzgerald has to be a tempting proposition as good as Marshall/Jeffery are (how teams keep on picking up Carson Palmer is beyond me - he's been visibly awful since about 2008 and only ever had 2 quality seasons and one OK one to begin with) or the Titans also, but I generally don't think the market will be as good as he might imagine. McCown has also possibly cost him millions in the last few weeks. If the Bears can haggle him down on price I think they would do well to hold onto him for 2-3 years and look to develop a young QB underneath him, which Trestman has a good reputation for.

Jay has a second kid on the way, has voiced his commitment to Chicago and knows well his injuries will scare away teams from coming in big. I'm confident he'll stay for a reasonable price.

The Trestman O is working very nicely and that's another incentive. Is there another duo with more yardage than Marshall/Jeffery?

Jets have announced they signed Ed Reed, bit surprised by that one

Coming into an in form defence that brings a lot of pressure up front. Could be a good fit that.

Interested to see how it pans out this season and what his contract situation will end up like.

The Jets defense doesn't need Reed so it's a strange one.

Oddly enough.....there's some feeling of Deja Vu...

A promising young QB by the name of Oliver Luck took the starting job of Archie Manning at Houston, and Manning was traded to Minnesota......

Of course Archie didn't put up Peyton type numbers after being let go....and Oliver never lived up to expectations.

yep Landry and Allen are doing a fine job at the safety position (its at the CB where we need some help)

hopefully he can be an effective situational safety and provide some veteran leadership to the younger guys like Allen and Bush, his knowledge can only serve to benefit those guys.

Plus anyone can get that last little bit of juice out of him it will be Rex
