Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ive recently been on the laptops forum enquiring about laptops that come with with less storage and more features as i have an 500gb ext hard drive so dont need storage.

would i be better off buying a main PC processor unit instead and adding it to my ext hard drive and screen.

would i get better specs for the money and if so can anyone recommend a model.

i would like it for multimedia but it doesnt have to be suitable for latest games

    thanks

When you buy a laptop you're paying a premium for portability. So if you don't need the portability then by all means it's much more cost effective to buy a desktop. In other cases the happy medium may be to buy both, i.e. a cheap netbook for €300 and a more powerful desktop for €1000.

Now the main thing to ask, what's your budget?

Secondly, when you say multimedia what exactly do you mean? Video editing is the heaviest and can be fairly processor heavy and audio editing isn't far behind. However, things like casual photo editing or webdesign don't need much in terms of power and you'd be better off investing in a good screen.

Would you consider putting the pc together yourself or do you want a pre-built machine? Much better value if the former but dell have nice systems for +or-500.
Customize one of these and you will be getting a good business class pc with specs that will easily do what you need.

    Choose the below processor:
    Intel® Core™2 Duo E8400 processor (3.00GHz, 1333MHz, 6MB cache) [add € 50.00]
Any of the other upgrades arent worth it.

Wow, did you read the ops post at all? He said a pc suitable for multimedia not a htpc.

And if it was a htpc he was looking for this is better: http://www.asrock.com/nettop/overview.asp?Model=ION%20330HT

For sub 500, pre-builts are often better value than building yourself.

You can go into PC World or Curry's and get a HP with a dual/tri core, 2gb ram and a screen for around 500, just pop in and have a look.

You would not build that yourself for that price, and get an OS for it too...

If you do want a laptop though, a Dell Inspiron 1540 (or whatever 15xx model) will start at around 450 and do everything you require from it.

    or Adverts.ie

That guy is selling that for €500. Well worth it, and fairly powerful too. (much more power than you'd get for a pre-build for that price)
