I forgot my computer so I need to get them off someone else. I had to pull out and finish with the "groupe en arriere". I had turned back when I saw a club mate so I caught back up with him and a couple of others he was with and we completed the other lap.

I know in the picture I did, it says 1h15 behind, thats not true, we were a good few minutes off but not that much.

    Race Report:

Just about made it down to the start in time, so no time to warm up (excuse no.1). We started, I thought the pace was grand, I just kept sucking wheels and hoping for the best. Then on lap two, I was at the back of the bunch, SACH Central pointed out that the A3s had coaught up with us, driving the pace on a bit, my mouth just became really dry and salty. I pondered wether or not to bow out gracefully, which I decided was for the best. I thought I was going to chuck up, my saliva was sticky. Was heading back to base when I saw a club mate so I turned around, caught up with him and a few others and we proceeded to complete the final two laps. I know myself, if I had of been feeling OK, I would definately made two laps with the bunch and probably would have got dropped during the business end. We probably finished 5-10mins off the main group.
Got scores of my mate and, he reckons (he erased them this morning, and why not?) 39kms in 1h13 ave 31.2kmph.

Ride home, left the computer in the car, so tried the sportstracker which this time recorded me for 0.02 kms. Anyway, 41.35kms in 1h23m45 which give an average of 29.89 kmph (by my calculations). I was feeling kind of tired, then I got a sudden burst of motivation when on the radio came the full version of this:

I don't think Fabian Cancellera is feeling troubled. I'm still not feeling the mae west, I think it could be from the amount of dust we have at work (it's a new building). TT rules are simple: predict a time, ditch any timers or speedometers, closest to their predicted time wins. No time to warm up, just cycled to the event, predicted 27mins for 13.something km, finished in 27 something minutes, sportstracker (updated and in my back pocket the whole time) gave 13.97km in 28m18, ave 29.6kmph which would include the few seconds at the start when I wasn't moving and the end part after I'd crossed the line. so I probably did average 30kmph. Route wasn't flat but wasn't hilly either, started off into a strong head wind turned left for a bit and then left back towards the city on a good road surface with the wind, which allowed me to use the tri-bars. Got over-taken twice :( but did manage to overtake one other person :)
Cycled home the long way, so I suppose I did about 30km in all.

Funny how it goes sometimes, I'm ill, I've been cycling like crap all week and then I put in a personal best. Did the lumpy 50km, only droped into the granny on occasion and tried powering up the hills. When I got to Kanes bridge my average was 24kmph so I knew a best time was very possible if not already in the bag, powered on and near the end I was 26.7kmph so I tried my hardest to bring it up to 27kmph which was just beyond me. Stats are, 51.76km, 1h55m11, ave 26.9kmph, max 51.8.

    Captains log:
Went to a stag Saturday night, I thought it was original of my friend to come to Kilkenny for his stag  Sick as a dog at work. I'd left my bike there the day before so I decided to sweat the beer out of me: 41.39km, 1h34m52 ave 26.1, max 41.3. Think tomorrows race is going to be intersting.

Something I forgot to add, Today FM had some Bob Marley evening which is possibly the worst music to motivate for cycling.

This is evening I cycled back to Kilkenny against a strong wind, I was back around 19h30 which was 30mins after the beginners left. I'd asked Toblereone to give me the route in advance, he didn't know, only that it was out the Callan Rd, so assumed the rest and met the group on their way back in.

The end of the spin was a bit funny, I made a bit of a knob-jockey of myself. We were approaching the castle and I kind of wondered if there was going to be a sprint, I saw the pace pick up and I though it was happening, I was a bit down the group. Saw one guy I'd love to beat in a sprint start to speed up, so I hit the hammer, top ring and proceeded fairly quickly around the group. I saw my target slow down and I thought oh bollix, I've just made a complete tool of myself but someone else went off completely, so I wasn't the only one.

Scores on the doors, 65.71km in 2h27m51, ave 26.6kmph, max 47kmph

Training race, with special group, given 6min headstart. So we start, I go full bolt when I look around to see if someone is going to come through I realise I'm on my own, knew that this wasn't going to last and it didn't, was caught after a few kms. Few of us doing work at the front of the group, eventually my legs cave in and I find myself dropped, the rest of the race goes through me, I'm too shagged to even bother trying. The happy group comes, again it's me and a couple of others working, I get tired, I know I'm poor but I want to do my fair share, if we all had of worked together we could've kept away for longer, there's plenty of time for selfishness at the end. There are some amount of lazy bastards out there.

Warm up and race, 42.10km, 1h24m33, ave 29.8kmph, max, 53.8.

Went out for what I thought was going to be a good session but after about 10kms it was apparant my legs were like two sacks of sh1te attached to my torso. I decided to change the route to remove hills and take it easy. So we went out passed Ballycallan, onto Callan, towards Carrick. Met a guy who had been racing the evening before also in Commeragh. I was happy to have company, the conversation was good and keeping my mind away from the pain in my legs. Then there was three of us, I altered my route to continue on with the guys as I knew when I would be alone it would be back to feeling every pedal stroke. I had to pull out though as my cleat came loose, I would have been turning off in a few kms anyway so I let them on. Went up towarsd Templeoreum, which is a long hill with a few hairpins and featured on the TdKK. When I got to the top, there was more cleat tightening to be done. The descent was deadly though, brand new road surface and a speed limit of 50kmph giving me a target which for the benefit of any gards reading I did not break a few times on the way down ;). Decision time do I go to Dunammagan and up through Kells or Knocktopher and up the old Waterford road. Stopped in Knocktopher for a cleat tightening, can of coke and a snickers, which I'd earned. Thought I made the wrong choice going to go to Knocktopher as Dunamaggan would have been shorter but it was brilliant being on the old Waterford road as the new motorway has removed all the traffic making it a great road to ride. More cleat tightening, then I got to the Waterford road roundabout, the sign for 9 minutes to the city centre, decided to see how fast I'd be this time: 2m57 :) Probably scared the bejaysus out of a car or two.

    Full-time scores: 86.33km, 3h17m50, ave 26.1, max 52.8 (obviously not in the 50kmph zone ;)).

Yesterdays Time-Trial: it's hardly going to come as a surprise that I was slow.

Left work and cycled the 24km to the start of the TT in Comer, 7km uphill. I thought it was all uphill but when I realised it wasn't it was too late to change my predicted time, ah well. I did the 7km in 17m02. I then cycled back into the city, all in all 52kms done, in 1h59m29 ave 26.27kmph max (no clock on TT so if I went faster there it's unrecorded), 56.5kmph.

TT is from 25km to 32km(ish) points

Quitting: If it's good enough for 7 times winner of the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong, it's good enough for me.

Tuesday night racing in Waterford, plan was, leech and leech well. I'm with the burgers and pizza brigade again (I'm possibly more guilty than all of them put together, I just cycle every day), eye up my competition, I make a point of starting at the back. As we roll out, I see who isn't going to last a lap, so I get ahead of them, I'm also making it blatently obvious that I've no intentions of going near the front. A young lad in a FDJ kit is doing 90% of the work and most people are happy to let him, he falls back a couple of times but keeps going to the front and puts in a great effort and speed, a real fighter. Well I thought a chain gang was been formed but I was mistaken, everyone does a couple of seconds at the front and then I go up, no one behind me to take over, fúck, I knew was going to be a while, I let someone else up eventually but I'm almost spent, we're about to hit a hill and I take over again thinking I might help shake off a couple of the weaker riders, coming around the corner to complete lap one I'm up the front again, hit the hill, try to power up but I'm spent, dropped and I go to the next corner, wait for the rest of the race to pass through before going to complete lap 2. Have a chat with Quigs Snr who was marshalling, on the last lap not too far from the end my group is still out in front with the young lad and about 4 or 5 others still with a bit of a lead over the chasing pack.

    Scores including warm-up etc: 33.39km, 1h14m32kmph ave 26.8 max 53.8kmph.
Evidence of my work at the front. This was taken about five seconds before I quit.

Just your regular evening spin, cycle 35km back to Kilkenny, take in an auld time-trial and go for a wee warm down after.

TT, I wasn't too bad (or at least that's what I'm telling myself), 13.5km in 23m10 (after cycling into the wind for 35k). It went back out the road I come home on every evening so I knew it well.

Scores on doors, 75.67kms, 2h36m30, ave 29.10kph, max 43.4 (TT without computer so no max there, rest is calculated).

4 boardsies at the TT, 3 of us in this photo (that I've robbed):

First sportive of the year. Before we started I asked some strange looking guy in a Slaney jersey for a loan of a track pump, turned out to be jwshooter, also went over to a guy in a boards jersey, git101. We lined up for the start, good mix of jerseys, Carlow, Marble City, Slaney, Naas, boards, Usher, Swords, Waterford Sportif and Wexford were some of the ones I saw with the first four in prominence. There was about 70. Off we go, through Tullow, up towards Castledermot, Baltinglass, there's a very short but sharp bump after Baltinglass which seems to sort out the order for the day, I end up near the front. Fearing the worst about going up front as I have no power but it seems OK, then Seán Kelly from our club goes up with a tri-athlete (I thought they were barred from cycling events, I made a cardinal sin and spoke to him, I'm sorry) and nearly blows the pack apart. Hacketstown has a cnut of a hill and the sprint for the sambos and cake is on. Left the food stop after everyone else, which I didn't realise, pull myself and a club mate up. On to Shillelagh, where I get noticed, we hit a hill, everyone else in front of me slows down, I go around the inside and keep spinning up the hill, ahead of everyone else at the top I slow down and get back in line, feeling very embarrassed. On to Bunclody, wanted to head up Mt. Leinster with a few others but was advised against doing so as I had to give someone a lift back to Kilkenny so I should stick with the group. At Bunclody our tri-athlete decides to peg it up the hill, I'm not in the humour for track standing up it either, everyone is shouting "go on Captain" Seán Kelly joins me who also received much encouragement and we pull the whole thing back together :D Kiltealy next before the drop into Ballymurphy, I'm at the front and nobody is going to take that position away from me, I want tea and cake and there's no way someone is getting it before me. After the food stop, I'm feeling sluggish, I don't want to go near the front, my stints up there are now very short. On we go up through Fenagh befor meeting the Wexford Rd again, it's starting to get sprightly, we turn the last corner and the sprint is on, surprised I still had power in the legs but maybe it was the rush of blood to the head leading me on, that was a good laugh, never been in a sprint before as I usually bow out earlier. The amount of training I'm doing and the experience I now have, showed up really well and I was very happy after. I'm also confident I'll have little trouble cycling over to Moret next month (famous last words). Fair play to Carlow RCC, I love the plaque and the two sprotives I've done here have been really well run.

    150km, 4h47m59, ave 31.2kph, max 60.0kph.

You are supposed to build up your energy reserves in the day or so before setting off on your 1,000 km charity ride. Stuffing your face now will be totally counterproductive...

(now where did I put the rest of that cheesecake?)

Anytime I eat copious amounts of food during a cycle the consequences are usually bad.
I can now do 6 hours on the bike with a good breakfast, plus a cereal bar and Clif shot bloks. However I usually eat like a swine post cycle.

    Yesterday post cycle
Pint of coke and packet of crisps in pub where I finished.
Torc recovery shake in wifes car on way home.
    At home
    Salt and Chilli ribs
    Chicken satay skewers
    Chicken fried rice
    Crispy aromatic duck.
(I did have help eating all of this).

    2 cans of coke.

If I was to eat 18 slices of cake during a cycle, well then I would have no room to eat all of the above junk afterwards.

For me it's totally on the day sort of thing. If I'm tired I will launch an attack on the sugary stuff. If I feel like complete crap out on my own, it'll be a bag of sugar coated jam dougnuts if I can find them washed down with a can of coke. I try and eat small calorie ladden stuff during a cycle. The day before a sportive I'll eat a large meal (vindaloo if possible) as early as possible and in the morning a bowl of Müesli. After the sportive it's recovery bar and about the same as what I ate in a food stop.

Got the beginners route in advance, so cycled from Carlow through Gowran to Bennettsbridge where I'm not sure if the group has gone through or not. I'm hoping they have gone through as in the last five minutes it's started to píss rain. I go to a petrol station to pick up a drink where I see the group pass and the cúnt in front of me is dicking around with fúcking scratch cards. When scratchy has finished fúck acting around I pay for my drink and peg it after the group who are a couple of minutes ahead but I catch up with them. So it's raining heavy above me, I'm getting splash back from the bike in front of me and thanks to the vent on the bottom of my shoe I'm getting splashed from the water on the road, all in all I'm a very wet Captain Havoc. I'm also only wearing summer gear as when I left Carlow it was grand. We continue on with the group through Thomastown and turn for home at Ballyhale onto Knocktopher, Stoneyford, Danesfort and in. I just hide somewhere in the group and suffer in silence. At the end I see one of the guys is up for a sprint but my hand is too cold and wet to change into the big ring so I don't sprint it. Stop quickly at the castle and head for home. I couldn't change back into the middle ring so I had to cycle home in the granny ring.
