Great to have so many experts on Shane's golf and his life in general.

Getting as bad as the Rory thread.

Is this not a discussion forum?

Unfortunately a poor Irish Open by all our players.

The pro players yes. But I think sugrue is doing well for an amatuer with limited experience at this level

Forum is in danger of becoming Peaksville!
And, if by some strange chance, you should run across him, you had best think only good thoughts. Anything less than that is handled at your own risk, because if you do meet Anthony, you can be sure of one thing: you have entered The Twilight Zone.

I thought he was taking six weeks off. Hopefully he puts in a good performance.

Change of mind for Shane, said at the Irish Open he would be taking a good break and playing just three more tournaments in the US around the time of the Masters.

I would say being current open champion and not playing in the European tour flagship event would have raised a few eyebrows . Looks bad when you see the likes of Patrick Reed making the the trip over .

That may well have come into it. Reed and Rose making the trip but the likes of Rahm, Garcia, Casey and a few of the other top Europeans aren't travelling. Erik Van Rooyen sixth favourite with the bookies for the Tour's flagship event. Still, Shane has a decent record there, hopefully plays well.

He had a lot of painting to do at home after being away but he got it done quicker than expected and is now free to play thing week :D

*Reference to painting is the pics posted on Instagram of him painting a fence at home

Not sure it si a good idea....think he could have done with a little more time not playing

A break is as good as a change and all that!

He has a good record around Wentworth although they are not used to playing it at this time of year.

It's possible he figured out what's been going on and no better place for a confidence boost than a track where he's been in contention quite a lot over the years.

Don’t forget that it’s the European Tour’s flagship event and they want as many as possible of their top players to take part in it. And it’s worth 64 world ranking points to the winner, so it could give a real boost to his world ranking position if he performs well.

Nice pairing with Tommy Fleetwood & Danny Willett.

Do European tour do appearance fees?

Some sponsors might but I doubt the Tour themselves do.

You'll probably find players are not allowed an appearance fee but the sponsor might happen to have something on that would like player x to make an appearance and there is a golf tournament on near by and they may as well play it if they can get a spot on the timesheet

They are allowed appearance fees and they come from the sponsors.
I don't think there that common though, only the really popular golfers get them. It wasn't a common thing before Tiger came along but every sponsor wanted him in their event donut got a bit out of hand then with Woods and Mickelson making a lot of money without striking a ball.
I'd imagine Rory, DJ, Thomas, Brooks and maybe Rickie command an appearance fee these days. There may be more than that.

More likely he is meeting obligations to sponsors.

He’s -5 playing the 18th after a run of 5 birdies and a bogey in his last 6 holes. Hopefully it’s the sign of a bit of a spark in his game.

As someone said above, he always seemed to like it around Wentworth.

2 early birdies this morning has Shane in the lead by a shot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,853 ✭✭✭Trampas

I’m sure he is delighted he changed his mind. Probably went out with mindset of the hell with this and relaxed and swinging better. You can be sure come weekend that will change to I want to win this

Watching highlights from yesterday and as I expected his birdies mainly came from excellent putting just like in the his open win. When his putter is hot he is unstoppable

Is that the same putter he won the open with?
because why would he change that?

If only he got that birdie on the 7th, great opportunity. Still, 2 shot lead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,541 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Double bogey on 9, back to -11 and joint lead. Poor tee shot ultimately costs

Good birdie there on 12. 1 back now

Pretty scrappy and poor golf from him over the last few holes. 4 back now so big ask to win tomorrow.

Hatton has had an amazing season

Taking 4 from 100 yards on 18, sums up the back 9, gives 2 back to the field.

The rain put him off but it was a brutal approach

    Out with Poulter tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,784 ✭✭✭abff

That last hole was very disappointing. He never really caught fire, but a 5-4 finish would have kept him in the last pairing. Hopefully, he can get some momentum back tomorrow. The fact that his partner today was having an even worse round probably didn’t help.

Not sure what playing with Poulter will be like, but let’s hope things go well for him.

Lovely shot into 4 for the bird, needs to get motoring and quickly.

He should be disappointed with the weekend performance. Great to get into position for weekend and then fade away would hurt many of golfers.

Best thing to do is remember Thursday and Friday and forget about weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,175 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Two poor rounds over the weekend once he got into contention, dissapointing.

Looks like he’s heading back to the US this week. He spent weeks talking about getting home to the family and spending time with them and then is getting back out quickly. Same as the rest of us I suppose 😂

Playing on pga tour this week.

It is restricted no cut field so points for turning up basically

Couple of days of changing nappies will do that to you.
