Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Back to par playing the last, decent recovery after being +3 after 8.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,710 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Tees off at 9.05 a.m Irish time tomorrow with Donald and Jaidee.

I didn't see a lot of the golf today, but he got off to a woeful start with that double bogey, and had a shaky enough first 9. Fair play to him for recovering the way he did. He needs a good round tomorrow. C'mon Shane!

Like seeing him doing well as much as the next fella but he can put a fair strop on when things not going his way. His second to the first was followed by a long scowl a lot of muttering and a spit which did well to clear his belly. Come on Shane, you're better than Thomas Bjorn. In direct contrast to that he has the best smile when things are going his way...

He's a young guy living his dream, but he is a very fine golfer and I hope he conducts himself well on and off the course.

Wonder was that his 2nd...bogey 6??

Yikes it was obviously the 3rd hole, another 6!!! +3 early doors again.

Another dreadful start to his round. Let's hope he can bounce back like he did yesterday.

birdie on the 6th. He's on his way back!

To give Shane his due, he seems to be good at moving on after bad holes.

A very important ability for a golfer to have.

And after 10 holes, he has clawed his way back to level par. Well done lad!

Rather than edit the above note, it occurs to me that some other combinations are possible that would allow 4 of the 8 players to move ahead of Shane (for example, Fleetwood first and Blixt second), but the basic message remains the same - it's pretty unlikely.

A question; lets take it as given that Lowry finishes out the year in the top 50 and therefore gets his invite to the Masters. What would happen if he fell out of the top50 in the early part of the year (say Jan)? Does it knock him out of lots of tournaments? Or like the Masters do big PGA tournaments fix their qualification based on end of year standings?

The masters have 2 cut offs for top 50. End of year and maybe again end of March. The next time Shane needs the world rankings to get him into an event is top 64 for the WGC matchplay which is a small bit later in the calendar next year. US open is top 60 nearer the time.

I think JS has pretty much answered your question. But on the specific point of year end rankings, as far as I know, the Masters is the only tournament that has invitations based on the year end rankings. The others all have cut off points much closer to the events themselves - typically 2 weeks or so before the event, with perhaps a second chance for those who move into the top 50 the following week.

And shane is away. Had a 10 footer for par on the first We didn't see

At least we know he holed a good putt.
-1 after 3, 3/4 shots better than his start in first 2 rounds. Top 10 wouldn't be a bad start to the new season.

Through 5 now in -1. So much better than the first two days. Hopefully he will make a bit of progress up the leaderboard today.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,186 ✭✭✭munsterlegend

keeps dropping shots after making progress. -1 thru 13 so hopefully can pick up one or two more and try and finish top 10 tomorrow.

He's back to par now with one to play. But if he finishes in the middle of the field, that'll do nicely to keep him in the top 50 I would hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 368 ✭✭markthespark77

    1 under to finish..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,076 ✭✭✭✭vienne86

That's grand from Lowry. Still nicely in the middle. No disasters.

Great round from Danny Willett - he's a player I like.

Great start today, eagle on 2.

If he could shoot 68 today it would be class. Give him a run at 4th and some tasty ranking points

Really hope that's not a mistake that will be corrected. It looked like a strange spot for a 2nd shot to me .

Yes he won't win this but 4th would be a great way to wind up a very good season. C'mon Shane!

    Great birdie on 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,822 ✭✭✭Old diesel

That's the way to do it - recover nicely after hitting bother in earlier rounds.

    Lovely

4 shots gone in 4 holes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

Very up and down tournament for Shane. He's had an eagle, 16 birdies, 10 bogeys and 3 double bogeys. Obviously still hitting some great shots, but also making lots of errors. He's had a busy few weeks and I expect he's looking forward to a break over Christmas.

Does anyone know when he's next scheduled to play?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

    Eagle on 14 there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

    And then bogey on 15

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,424 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Birdies the last to be 11th on his own.

Will extend his ranking points lead over Todd

But worryingly there are four players above him on the leaderboard who could threaten his position in the OWGR....

The leaderboard looks like this at 2 p.m. (OWGR in brackets) ...

    4 Siem (61)
    7 Oosthuizen (55)
    T8 Blixt (59)
    T8 Clark (61)

Haven't calculated the prize money but I can't see any (or enough) of then winning enough more than he does to make up that sort of ground.

I've done a quick update and none of the above players will move ahead of Shane. By my reckoning, he will move up to 44th, just behind Lee Westwood and just ahead of Mikko Ilonen.

Has Westwood dropped to 43rd? Didn't think he was that low.

Lee is currently 42nd, but Jaidee will move ahead of him on Monday. Shane will move ahead of Lee in the year end rankings as he will drop fewer points over the next three weeks.

Of course we wanted Shane to do better today, but it has been a great year form him.

    Nice 2014.

Lovely to see Shane at #44 now in the OWGR. What a year!

so he'll get into all the majors now for 2015 then by virtue of the fact that he'll be in the top 50 at the end of this calendar year?

No just the Masters, he's already qualified for The Open anyway.
U.S Open will be top 60 nearer the time and top 100 for USPGA.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,843 ✭✭✭Panrich

Rankings can be very volatile. Five of last years top 50 are now outside of the top 100. Watney (30-122), Manassero (43-143), Lynn (45-207), P Hansen (48-223) and Grace (50-117). It shows that getting into WGC events and the majors don't guarantee you success necessarily. Shane hopefully will push on from here but he needs to keep focused or it can easily slip away as the above examples show.
