Not sure if this is the right place - feel free to move it...

I was driving on the M7 just before Port Laois coming from Dublin at bout 130k ish (bold i know). I saw a car in rear view mirror with a red light (not flashing) comin up behind me. As it came closer I saw it was a Garda car so i slowed to 120 and over took the remaining cars convinced I was going to be pulled in. The Garda car kept going and I noticed it was a ERU car on the side.

Just wondering would I be done for speeding? Talked with mates and as they didn't pull me over they said i'd be fine. will i?

I wouldnt be worried if I was you in thsiscase....however the amount of speed checks/Traffic Corps cars I saw today was obscene on N/M 7/4..they must be raking in the cash ...saw a SMALL ('Traffic' not 'Transit'?) van parked in a dark layby putside Hewlett Packard in Leixlip at a ridiculous 50kmh spot ...it had a 'slit' in the rear window and I assume was in operation and not just Garda parked up ...If things are as they say to get a LOT worse with speed checks we'll all be doing the limit or off the road this time next year...

Noticed alot of stationary Garda cars pulled into the on ramps on the M7 heading out of Dublin this weekend, waiting on any speeders to get clocked with the gun and then give chase.

Yeah you need have no fear of a speeding ticket. If they had you on a stationary camera they wouldn't have needed to pursue you. They would have had to pull you in to get your details if they had you on radar. Anyway 130kmph indicated is probably closer to 120kmph in reality.

As an aside to that Garda drivers hate when people automatically slow down when they see flashing lights behind them. Correct procedure is to get into the left hand lane as quickly as possible. This may often involve accelerating to overtake rather than braking. Braking causes the Garda driver to brake also and he loses momentum!

That makes perfect sense, although i'm not sure how comfortable i'd feel accelerating to say 160km/h with a lit-up squad car on my tail.

This happened to me about 6 weeks ago and again 4 weeks ago. I didn't hear anything after it, so I think you are in the clear.

I think the ERU's are based in Limerick and when they pop between Dublin and Limerick, they are usually in a hurry.

I regularly see them tanking it back down to Limerick early morning in convoy.

I noticed that during last week. Seemed to be more of the marked cars and bikes than vans.

I saw some cops on the dublin direction on the M7 so thats why i thought it was the normal cops not the ARU/ERU.

And if i had of accelerated to 140kph+ they would have prob done me!!!

They are not the ERU (emergency response unit), are the main armed specialist intervention unit in the country, ERU dont have marked vehicles. plus thy dont wear uniforms.

the unit the op saw was the RSU (regional support unit), more commonly known as armed regional support unit.
this unit changes from normal uniform mode to armed tactical uniform mode when authorised.

    fooked so...

from the link above "RSU’s will patrol as regular uniform Gardaí performing the normal policing functions on a daily basis throughout the Region."

No your not, RSU volvos are not calibrated so your fine.

As for the post they were checking for tax etc.....rubbish im afraid. While they accompany members on checkpoints they are there for high vis deterrence to criminals. It will be regular uniform members that are looking for the tax etc. RSU have more on their plate.

While I have seen RSU doing traffic stops, it wasn't for stuff like tax. I have seen them bring in a drunk-driver to the station though.

They are there for the assistance of regular members when needed.

BTW, all of those Volvos have a red scrolling screen on the lightbar thats (nearly) always on. From a distance, it may look like its flashing. Even if its not on blue lights though, you should prob get out of their way, they mightn't always have blues on if they're on the way to a call.

If the ERU are going to do you for a traffic offence, you would have known about it.

Taking the car off a criminal because he didn't have tax or insurance or committed and driving infraction is a favourite pastime.

I know what you mean Anan, but I can't see a garda in a hurry objecting to somebody breaking the limit (within reason) to get out of their way, let alone stopping to do something about it. priorities and whatnot.

Thats the most difficult post i've ever had to read i think.

All the RSU cars are 2.4 D5 turbo diesels. Volvo don't even to a 2.8 turbo, the T6 is a 2.9

    sorry 2.9

the hav a t6 around portarlington

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,451 ✭✭✭CharlieCroker

not an RSU one, they don't.
All of the XC70's are specifically built Garda specials with the 2.4 D5 and auto/tiptronic gearbox.

i'm assuming that english isn't your first language going by your posts grumpy.

Not too sure about fast vectras, head over to the emergency services forum, there's 1 or 2 traffic corps members there

9.7, assuming that it's the 185bhp version, and before taking into account the extra weight that the Garda version would be carrying.

    Easy test OP,

Take a spin out with your Sat Nav and see what 130 on the dash reads on the Sat Nav.

The Volvos are Police special and beefed up (chiped is it??) to over 200 BHP

either/or really, they both do the same job but should be standard as it allows the driver to concentrate on his job - DRIVING

I agree every patrol car should have one. RSU only have the extra observer left rear view mirror.
