Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Importing a sprinter from the north, few questions!

    Hi, I came across a nice converted Merc Sprinter that is located up north, and I'm very temped to pick it up. The chap who owns it used it for travelling to motorbike races, and didn't bother getting it changed to a camper on the log book. I want to import it to the republic and obviously want it to be classified as a camper here. It has everything to satisfy the vrt people here (high roof, bed cooker etc), and if its not over the 3 tonne then I'm sure I can add extra water tanks and bike rack and what not to bring it over :).

    My question is do I have to register it as a van here, then get it registered as a camper seening as its currently registered as a van in the uk? Or can I just get it registered straight as a camper here as soon as I bring it in.

    From reading up about insurance company requirements and looking at other converted camper, what is does it mean by the camper area has to be connected to the cab? Am I ment to have a full walkthrough? I've seen a few iveco dailys and other converted panel vans with just a large open window, with the lower 1/2 of the bulkhead still in the camper. I got a few photos of the camper I'm interested in, and it appears that there is only a foot of open space between the cab and back. Will this be a big issue for the insurance company?

    Also, in terms of things I will need to do to register it as a camper, is this all:

    vrt (50euros)
    weighing (20)
    tax (88)
    insurance (320?)
    engineers cert (???)

    Also, where is the cheapest place to get an engineers cert in south dublin area, or roughly what do they cost?

    Phone the VRT office and ask them but I'd say you reegister here as a camper on the day - skip the van stage.

    If you call Dolment they'll be able to tell, they's probably ask you to send the photos by email bit ask first.

    The engineers report is easy any SMII mechanic can do it for you probably a 100 euros - depends if he's servicing it as well mine didn't charge but he does charge alot for a service.

    If it's not 3 ton then when you weigh it they could ask you to take everything out - do it before you buy it. If it's not then at the moment vans are down it price but the VRT office will probably over value it and you'll have to appeal.

    Thanks for that! The place in Carlow looks good, the only thing I dont like about the sprinters is the price of parts but they sound like a good bet if I need anything!

    Are Dolman and Stuarts the only 2 places that insure campers in Ireland?

    Looks like I have a problem, Both Stuarts and Dolman are looking for a walkthrough from the cab to the back! If that isn't one of the most stupid rules ever I don't know what is! For the camper I am thinking of getting it means a lot of work removing the bulkhead and possibly replacing the twin seat with a single passenger seat. Surely having some sort of bulkhead in place reduces the risk of getting struck by say a kettle or whatever if you were to have a head on crash!
