novice question regarding limited number of exposures per camera...?

I've been looking for a D40 on eBay, and came across the following in one seller's description..........
"This camera has taken 4883 exposures (Nikon design it to take over 50,000) in the 2 1/2 years that I've owned it."

I'm a beginner, and I'm just wondering what it means.
Are "exposures" just snaps taken? is there a reachable limit when the camera just packs in. can it be mended?

any info on all this much appreciated.

Yes.

Yes. - But, no one knows that number. All the manufacturer will give is a mean time to failure. Some cameras are rated for 50,000, some 100,000, some 300,000. A camera can fail after 10 shots or 100,000 shots. You just don't know.

Yes, it can be replaced, but may not be cost effective.
