Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

I have a picture i want to print and frame as a christmas present. I had to crop out some sky, but i couldn't keep it to standard aspect ratios. The image size is now approx 7.8 * 12.4 inches.

Any suggestions for mounting / framing / printing ? It doesn't fit in standard frames sizes.

    Thanks,

Really, when you're that close to 8x12 would it not just be easier to scale it down a little bit, put a nice border on it and put it in an 8x12 frame? Getting one custom made for 7.8x12.4 just seems like an unnecessary expense in my opinion.

That said, if you're set on it, there's a place off South Circular road (up the camden st end) that I'm told does custom framing but I can't for the life of me remember what they're called.

If the OP prints it as he wants then he can have a standard frame size mount cut with a custom picture window, there should be loads of places to do it, even if it will cost a euro or two more.

    OP:

stcstc / Steve from www.360-dpi.com should be able to offer to offer some sound advice
He also has some handy printing and framing guides listed on the website.

Another option is to enlarge the canvas within photoshop / the gimp, and center your image or "off center" your image to position it within what will thus be a larger print.

Also you could go with something like an unframed print - not like your standard €2.50 Harvey Norman enlargement, but a proper board mount with wrap. As long as they aren't overdone, they look really well with the right image.

Steve (boards user stcstc) did one for me last year and it looked/looks great. As I say I wouldn't go overboard with getting them done, but they do solve the problem of odd size crops. There are other mounting options too - you don't have to go with board and it depends on you intended purpose / location / etc..

I'd recommend to give steve a shout (pm to stcstc), show him the image and seek his advice.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks for the replies,

This size was actually 7.6 * 12.96 (slightly different to what i said earlier). My main concern with printing at this size, filling with a mount and then using a standard frame like 12*16 is that it would lead to the proportions of the mount being incorrect and unbalanced. There would be 2.2 inches on each side and only 1.52 on top/bottom.

So I had another look at cropping, and made it 7.6 * 12, I added white canvas and am printing at 12*16. That should improve the mount proportions.

Unframed prints look great but i don't think it would suit this image, its a black and white landscape and i think i'd like the frame for this one.

Thanks for the suggestions and links,

I went with the printers close to work as i'm limited by time, next time i must give Steve a shout and not leave things to the last minute :) it could save me some trouble.
