Except for the fact that the Golf looks horrible, is two a penny, the Mk 4 has dire handling, it has an engine similar in decibel levels as a 135 (you sound like a farmer so I assume you'll know what I'm talking about!), and has less power than the Alfa.
Anyone who thinks a Mk4 Golf looks better than a designer car is the kind of person who thinks Biddy is better looking than Rihanna.

I'll take it then your one of the 50+ generation chasing your youth with a Alfa that looks like the front of an armadillo..! And the only reason you probably still own one is due to the horrible trade in value you were offered for it........ thats if ya can find a dealer!!

That being said, the Golf is common, even the GTTDi, if your after looks, performance and class I'd go with the E220 CDi Merc mentioned earlier or a Audi A6, the A4 is too common also.

Well you sacrifice a little performance with the looks in relation to the merc, but its a better buy than the same class of BMW and there aint much to chose from under 2litre thats reasonably economical too...! Whats your suggestion?

Cool car. They basically are a Volvo 960 in all but name and a few subtle differences.

What year is it by the way, and is she original Irish?

You take it wrong! I still have my youth, and my eyesight too, which it seems not everyone in this thread have! Even if I didn't have my youth, I'd rather "chase" it in an Alfa than a Golf! At least I'd get closer to it with the Alfa! Did my farmer comment cut too close for you? :D Don't worry, Biddy is a lovely woman I'm sure! And sure she makes a great cuppa tea!

God so much generisation bazz. Where did you get that idea that Volkswagen,
AUDI, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT, Škoda, Volkswagen Vans, Scania and 49.9% of Porsche were unreliable.

They just bought suzuki as well "world domination".

ps. me is a he bazz, we have a vw, skoda and a GT in our house and I can tell ya the Alfa is nicest by far but if I have to get somewhere important we don't take it been late toooo many times!!! great for the Sunday drive tho.

    Any other ideas lads,

Something like the Alfa GT, alternatives in diesel to that?

Turbo diesel but sporty and with a decent bit of power and good enough handling

It's the 100PS 1.7 CDTi. Can be remapped to 130 easily enough, and apparently nice and torquey. Like most diesels, don't expect to be first away from traffic lights though.

Feel a bit cramped inside for my liking, but not so different from a GT in that respect.

Bit of lag on take off from the engine, but pretty decent once you get going.

That's a nice looking one in the link and seems to have a fair bit of kit. I've never had a coupe for a decent length of time, but had an SRi hatch (petrol) for a weekend in the UK last year and was fairly impressed. Doesn't handle quite as well as a Focus, but it wasn't as far off as I expected.

Are they leather seats that aren't mentioned in the write up?

Definately worth a look I'd say.

138 bhp tax band A 5years warranty left, as goood or better than a red TDI golf

    Not true.

I sold the Alfa which I had for 3 years and 40,000 miles before I bought the Accord- which I have had since September. Just putting my toe in the water. Only problem with the Accord is its inherent dullness.

Nice to know you are all so observant.

And if you think an 05 Accord with 97000 miles is worn out. Well I suggest you should take a look at it and then decide.

I know this will sound wrong but...I recently bought an 05 Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi when i lost my job and it will do most of things I want it to. While not "fast" I don't have any issues overtaking , pulls well. It handle well. Had a rally co-driver dude swinging out of the jesus handle yesterday... always get 1000km to my €50 and if driven right gives up to 1300km. And can be chipped to give 130bhp no bodder.

Diesel Avensis here, its not flash, but they are well regarded and pretty fuel efficient, 50 mpg seems to be no bother on the motorway. One thing to watch out for is that the 03-06 model seems very sluggish below 2k RPM (once it gets above it though, woohoo !), test drive it before you buy to make sure you can live with it.

I have a Fabia Vrs and while its not a hot hatch or anything like some make out.But for what is ( quick, economical car ) its to hard to find better.

For around 5k or so there is no way to find a car which looks as good ( looks thrifty imo ), is as practical, is as reliable, is as economical, is as comfortable or packs the same sort of performance imo. Its a jack of all trades. You can achieve an average 60mpg if you drive sensibly, however, under normal conditions you will get around 50mpg.On long journeys its very comfortable ( I was shocked with that part too ) and with a remap ( average tends to be 170bhp and nearly 300lb/ft of torque ) it can keep up with alot of things in a straight line.Overtaking is a breeze in it, never have to change gear as power/torque is always there. Its rare as well here, would be money well spent imo, better than going the every second car avensis route anyway.

That's a very nice example, and well spec'd considering it's on Irish plates (it has 17" wheels, leather, the BOSE sound system, pdc). Nice colour inside and out. Definitely worth going to see.

Bumping this back up as I'm gonna start looking at a few cars now.

So far my list of cars to look at is:

    Alfa Romeo Gt

And well, thats it at the minute.

So I've decided to change my criteria a little as I've moved closer to work so no need to definately go for a diesel although I still would like a car that has decent mpg (35+).

So heres a new criteria to see if it throws anything up:

    engine size up to 2.2
    petrol or diesel (35/40mpg+)
2/3 door coupe stlye as a preference
    €10k to spend

I never really looked at BMW's before but would I get a nice one that fits what I want with my budget? which variant would suit me best?

What about other petrol cars that would have decent mpg but still fit what I want?

I got a Nov 04 BMW 320d at the weekend with 65k on it for 9.5k, I'd say you could too. The earlier 320ds had a few problems with turbos and swirl flaps but from doing some research the mid 04 onwards are a lot better with a modified manifold etc.

Have it a few days now and cant fault it its great, just going to get the upgraded turbo filter if its not done already and should have no problems!

I think this is key. For the longivity of the turbo at least. All the bad press about the BMW diesels stems from this issue with the Turbo not being looked after correctly - Main Dealer or not, the owner will have to spend a bit to keep it right.

It seems to be to me anyway, that and more regular oil changes. I am always an advocate of maintaining a car well and servicing well ahead of time and I just cant see how people expect the turbo to last at 20k mile service intervals.

Mine was done every 15k up to 45k miles and then every 5k after that, so fingers crossed.

I've had 2 BMW 320d's. 02 Great car but turbo went. 04 Great car full stop. This car will always sell on because of the badge. Beware of clocked ones though. I've driven one with a 165,000 miles on the clock and it was perfect. Anybody would be easily fooled that it had done 80K. Service history is Key so don't be afraid of high mileage examples.

bit confused reading the thread lads, what exactly is diesel mileage for a car? Would it be worth my time changing from petrol to diesel for a 70 mile round trip 7 days a week?

You'd get the older 320d coupe within your budget I'd say (and petrol versions as well) -not sure if you would swing the newer version for €10k.
