So if youre between the ages of say 28 and 38, where do you go out... Everywhere I go seems to be really young lately. Cleeres is like a feckin creche, the Hi B is full of smug marrieds, as is Tynans. So where is good for the indie chilled out pint, like The Set Theatre, which is deadly thank god (though I was only there once so far...:)

    Ryan's on Friary street?

In fairness you have reached an age where lots of your peers are married, so you either come to terms with that or inform them informally that they are putting on weight and have nothing to be smug about.

In response I would reckon, pub wise

    Ryans
    Left Bank
Cleeres (Go there when there's not a grunge and/or metal band in and you'll notice a healthy difference)
    Billy Byrnes

Club / Late bar wise, Set would be your best option. Morrisons and Dignity have unfortunately fallen to creche and/or scumbag levels of crapness.

It is the new hybrid pub half way between Billy Byrnes, which is on the top of John Street near the traffic lights, and Ryans which is on Friary Street (just off high street).

Happy Birthday Carlychick, I hang around with people around the 30 mark, we go to the Pump House, Kytlers, Left Bank, Byrnes, Morrisons those kind of places. Most people our age have a ball and chain and do get to party as much as they'd like :( but I do :D

What's to be smug about? being married? or being in the Hibernian? Either way I don't get it

Plus the Hib has Paulaner on tap, it' the only place in KK with a wheat beer on draft.
I'm becoming more involved in social activities outside the pub-scene so i haven't got a clue where who goes where. Although I too am really impressed with the set venue, it was badly needed in KK and it would entice me to go to gigs more often rather than the cramped back shed of a pub.
I like Ryans too but I hate trying to squeeze past people all the time, that's not the sense of community I'm seek.

Just home from Bell X1 in The Set...beckin Frilliant! Such a great venue...expecially when you know the drummers girlfriend and he puts your name on the door so you get a free ticket :) Hope they keep it goin and bring in more great bands like that. One think is though, theres always loads of talking. I was R.S.A.G. there too and everyone seemed to be talking throughout the whole feckin gig. I dunno. Anyway, happy out.

Kilkenny audiences have an awful reputation country wide for talking throughout gigs. Apparently it's a reason a lot of bands don't want to play here and avoid the place.

It's also the reason a lot of high profile gigs have been cut short over the years, when acts can't hear themselves sing. Case in point: Evan Dando, Morcheeba and Paddy Casey.

Maybe we just like background music?

Totally agree, was at Bellx1 last night too and the talking was ridiculous. Not just chatting kind of talking, I mean lads roaring at each other and girls screaming and laughing like hyenas.

Really enjoyed the gig but why the hell do those idiots pay 30 quid to stand in a room and roar at each other if they've no interest in the music? You can get away with a good bit of noise at an outdoor gig, but acting like that at an indoor gig is just plain rude.

Honestly though, if I was in Bellx1 I wouldn't want to play there again, which is a pity cos it's a lovely venue.

Is it any different to the idiots who pay money to go to the cinema so they can talk and **** around with their mobile phone for two hours!

Bloody idiots the lot of them

I think many Kilkennians are accustomed to socialising in enviornments such as Biddy's, Langton's, Matt's, Lanigan's, Morrison's (etc etc) where, in order to chat to a friend, or convey a drink order to a publican, one must scream into their face.

This means that people are simply so very used to competing with loud, crap music in a bar, that when their friends bring them to a decent gig, they think that it is normal and acceptable to shout for a quadruple vodka and red bull over a singer songwriter with an accoustic guitar, instead of waiting for a break in the performance.

Funny reading through the replys to your post, well for me i like the vibe in Ryans on Friary street and then cleeres is cool, the Set is amazing and im sure will do well!

However nothing really exists in this town for say the 25-40 age group whom like good music and can talk without shouting,i ran a music promotions company in KK for a while and ran gigs nationwide,at the time we brought Bell X1,Paddy Casey,Complete stones Roses,Manni,The stunning, jack l and many more,we put some of these in kilkenny and had mixed results.

Point is everyone moans about kilkeny not having enough decent live music but when we book the acts follow it through u get a lousy turnout,we usually had tickets priced at 20 euro cheapest in ireland at the time and still people whinged..like wtf ...wrecked my head big time...So we decided to run gigs instead in galway and waterford so maybe its because of a lack of a student crowd in kk.

As regards the noise issue and people talking during the gig well yes this is a Kilkenny thing and every musician & comedian we ran said it to me! It really pee's me off and why would you pay so much for a ticket to dis-respect the artist by talking about sh*te during the gig!

So after a couple of years i gave it uo and started back Djin and set up the Music for the now de-funct NV nights in the Ormonde Hotel. Late license issues arose so that closed along with the main club, that was probably the best place for your age group but since that kilkenny does need another type night..who knows...Now that im married i might see ya down in the hi-bee LOL..
