Big engines, quote your MPG here

Well the purpose of this thread is to see how "uneconomical" big engines cars actually are. Everyone mouths off about jeeps, SUVs and large saloons drinking the juice, when in fact I find they are not far off the consumption of underpowered Paddywagons, obviously depending on how large you go.

I'd be interested to see what other large-engined cars are doing MPG wise. Most cars on the road and peoples heads are still working off MPG, so we'll stick to MPG. You can quote your urban/extra urban/average figures if you like, engines 2.5l+ would be preferable.

2000 728i, 2.8l petrol.

I do 90% city driving and average 21MPG. On the motorway I see 36MPG. A 500 mile round trip to Galway I got 31MPG with 4 people and luggage.

What are you getting?

My motorhome: 2.5 liter TD powering a 3.5 ton shed on wheels ...between 10 and 13 l/100 km

Edit: that would be 28 or 22 of those imperial measures of distance to the imperial measure of volume for the old fashioned among us

E34 BMW 530i 3.0l V8 auto - commute into Dublin city centre. Mainly Dublin driving + regular longer trips: 20MPG

E38 BMW 735i 3.5l V8 auto - no commute into city centre. Mainly Dublin driving + infrequent longer trips: 21MPG

Porsche 928 4.7l V8 auto - mixed driving: 20MPG

Rover 75 1.8l manual - mixed driving, lots of short trips: 28MPG

2.0 GTi 50 euro gets me from Navan to Rathmines and home again for the week
The oul 6th gear comes in handy on the N3, Low revs=less fuel:)

Best I've seen out of a tank was 37 mpg (my calculations). It will do mid 40's with air con off and driven like a saint.

Average is about 34 mpg to a tank, mostly N and M roads, climate control always on auto, overtaking where possible and usually slightly higher than the speed limit (110 in 100's, 135 in 120's) with cruise on where possible. I blame the low gearing for a lot of it though (3.7k rpm at 120:eek:) but still not a whole lot better compared to the cars mentioned.

Best I ever got was almost 28 MPG, worst was 16MPG after spending 4.5 hours in traffic for what should have been a 20 mins journey because of the snow last year.
Average about 24MPG.

Good idea for a thread .Four wheel drive is probably more of a killer than high cc .Some of the 'souped' up JDM Imprezas/Lancer Evos etc are just beyond funny .(I remember once having a Lancer GSR that I couldnt get to a third day without having to visit a petrol station...)I guess obviously it all depends on how far you drive .If you only drive 'round town' and the odd long spin you can pamper yerself with a gas guzzler but for the commuting classes we need at LEAST 30-35mpg .


Was doin a few 'sums ' on this today as thinking of changing

1 litre Toyota Aygo 52MPG Vs 30mpg sporty wagon Vs 25mpg super sporty wagon = 1625 vs 2815 vs 3375 euro a year .Or to put it another way 135 vs 234 vs 281 euro a month .

Of course there are diesels out there that will do over 60mpg comfortably.
Strange to see that the NEW Cooper Diesel (80mpg+)is now the most economical car as the old one was no great shakes .

Keeping on topic I guess that old 1.6 Lancer GSR 1991 would average 26-28mpg and I like to think I drive fairly 'economically'.By contrast 1989 Opel Kadett GSi 16V would do 40-43 mpg.

I know this thread is mainly for large engine cars, but for comparison my 1.6T corsa has given me a lifetime average of 32.5mpg (according to the trip computer). Never bothered the brim to brim test.

How does everyone do there checks, ie are you using the trip computers or are you doing it by acutal millage vrs consumption.

Mine however not a large engine, IS200 29-30MPG every time I check it.

Its interesting to note the comparative inefficiencies of small petrol engines, pushing smaller cars. My old 97 Polo had a 1 litre block and I don't think it did any better than 30MPG. The car was incredibly heavy and the engine was so very small.

Newer smaller diesels are of course miles ahead, but when it comes to petrol engines, the big blocks aren't really that much off the smaller ones.

Seeing as there are a few smaller engined cars creeping in here I'll include my Civic 1.8L.

43 mpg - almost all over main road driving and 80 mile round trip/day. Pretty decent for a 1.8L i think?

I used to have a Jag XK8, it was a 4L V8 (God I loved that thing)

I was getting around 28mpg out of it, mainly cross country trips

Both on long trips (everywhere is far away from me) 75km distance, 50% motorway.

BMW 530i 3.0l I6 Auto 28-30mpg (once got 32 on same but cant get back up there)
BMW 850CSI 5.6l V12 6speed Manual 18-21mpg.

Racing around and shorter trips, the 530i is 23mpg and the 850CSI is 15mpg, so the CSI takes less of a hit to economy.

Well you will have to believe it i guess.

I have a 1.9 TDI (115bhp) Audi that does an average 58MPG, no word of a lie. I dont rev the hole out of it, accelerate gradually and keep it to 2000 to 2500 rpm per gear change. I do long distance driving on secondary roads and with little to no traffic jams

wet tyres will be heavier than dry ones so you may be using more fuel there and road water surface may affect MPG performance.

I'm getting good MPG now that I've ditched the 18's also, now running 16s with full winter tyres.

Shh! Not many Altea fans around here...! 35mpg out of a 1.4 in the XL is respectable. :cool:

Current - 3.2L M3 21 Mpg, if I drive like a saint 24 Mpg.
Previous - E46 328Ci, 26 Mpg
Previous - E46 320Ci convertible 25 Mpg
Previous - E46 318Ci 31 Mpg

Not a huge difference between the various displacements, its a fine line between the car being too heavy for the engine and the engine being more powerful than it needs to be to push the weight around the place at the optimum efficiency.

Tbh the 328Ci was the best compromise between performance and fuel efficiency. That was a beaut of an engine, the 3.2 is highly strung, takes a while to get to a smooth running temp on a cold morning, goes like a bat out of hell when it does granted, but it's a high performance luxury, the 328 was a nice balance between common sense and poke.

Currently driving a 06 passat 2.0 TDI 140 Sport. She does around 5.9l/100km or 48mpg on average. This goes upto 55-60mpg on long journeys.

i drive a isuzu troper 3.1 jeep. i think its very easy on fuel. dont no for sure what im getting mpg.

and i have my own daf 85 430hp.12 litre engine. which does roughly 8mpg motor way driveing. about 2mpg if on back roads go up large hills :P

During the summer I decided to record all fuel put into my vehicle's to see which was the cheapest per mile to run on my commute. (Others are motorcycles..)

Figures are based on the last 8K miles driven by myself since the end of August.

Overall average was 51.4 mpg mixed driving.
Best was 54.6 mpg to the tank.
Worst was 48.7 mpg to the tank.

Fuel cost 0.09 euro/mile

E32 1990 BMW 735, average about 28 mpg. Have gotten slightly better, but not bad for a car with almost 20 years under it's belt. I can get a LOT less if I push it and use the "Sport" mode, but great fun!

Could the quality of diesel fuel be another factor with MPG? I have heard that fuel quality varies from station to station.

I would be inclined to agree, two brands in particular seem to return slightly lower figures than the others. (only talking 2-3mpg though)

I actually get the same and sometimes better mileage from the discount fuel stations than the bigger brand name stations which seems strange.

One particular station in Dungarvan sells the no brand fuel and is consistently cheaper (today it was 102.9/L) and it appears that I get better mpg from that station.

Going to record fuel for the year and see how the seasons affect the mpg... winter seems to make a big difference to the economy, takes the engine longer to warm up.

BMW 840ci sport - E31 - 4.4l - get about 17/18 mpg. Mainly doing short trips.
On longer excursions, get around 21/22mpg. :rolleyes:

Saab 9-3 2.0 1999 with a gas guzzling 16 MPG, on a good day may reach 17-18 (methinks there may be a hole in the fuel tank :eek:)

than 12mpg on a track day.
