I need help finding a kids book

I know its a long shot but I was thinking about all the books I read as a child growing up in the 80s. well I think this book was published in the 80s could be early 90s. There was a book I read based around 2 red haired children(possibly twins) - a boy and a girl. They stumble across the underworld of fairies or elves.…

I know its a long shot but I was thinking about all the books I read as a child growing up in the 80s. well I think this book was published in the 80s could be early 90s. There was a book I read based around 2 red haired children(possibly twins) - a boy and a girl. They stumble across the underworld of fairies or elves. The underworld comes under attack and they all go on the run. The elves or faeries believe that the boy is their king that has come to save them.The boy and the girl end up developing pointy ears and magical powers along the way. The boy ends up having to fight a magical battle at the end. After its all over the 2 kids go back to their normal lives

Does anyone have any idea what book I'm talking about? Think I'm going to go mad.
