Just watched the countdown there. Seems like its gonna be a pretty heated one. Knogo said in the interview that hes beatin bjj black belts before. But looking at his record i dont see any black belts. Hardonk Evenson and al-Turk are all purple belts i think and Silva is a brown belt now. Dont know what he was when he faced Kongo.
    Can anyone clear this up?
    Also any predictions?

I like Kongo for this one, I think he will put a beating on mir, Kongo is one to look out for in the future imo.

Love Kongo's striking hope he can get back to his feet if and when its needed.

Think Kongo will use his reach to keep this at a distance and hit some of those very hard leg kicks he likes.

Did you see Cain Valesquez take him apart??

i expect Kongo to rush in at some stage while Mir is on his back and get caught in some kind of bone breaking sub. Mir Rd 2

I dont really see kongo losing this tbh. Mir has nothing for him on the feet and will have a hardtime getting kongo to the floor. If it hits the floor, kongo has enough sube defence savvy and experience, to stay out of trouble, and get back to his feet.

My prediction is kongo will light mir up on the feet, and then finish him with a merciful musta ala turk type ground n pound beating.

I put Mir in a much higher class than Al Turk, Kongo's ground game is crap, Cain exposed that

You mean the fight that Kongo had less than a month to prepare for and had Valesquez rocked 3 times?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,624 ✭✭✭Dancor

Mir by KO in round 2. He will pick Kongo apart with punches.

Are you serious? Mir could win this but he 100% won't beat Kongo in stand up!

Well believe it or not i think mir is actually the more technical striker and could beat kongo on the feet. But he is also a smart fighter and wont risk it. Kongo beat hardonk with ease but i believed hardonk to be the more technical striker. Mir is a better boxer but kongo will probably win if it stays on the feet. I see mir winnin with a 2nd round sub though.

Mir's boxing was excellent against nog so i think its unfair to say he has nothing on the feet. obviously kongo has the advantage tho.

didnt make a good job of getting back to his feet against velasquez, did he?? if this goes to ground with mir in control its over

Yes but Cain is a different calibre fighter than Mir. He has high level wrestling and takes everyone down. Cain, who is an excellent fighter, was a nightmare of a match up for kongo. Its worth mentioning that kongo took that fight on short notice with a dodgy knee as well.

Mirs takedowns and wrestling are nowhere near cains level and are actually much closer to kongos. Kongo outwrestled herring, who is a better wrestler than mir imo.

This is a very good match up for kongo.

I don't think he outwrestled Herring, they had a crappy fight and Herring won. Herring stated afterwards that he hadn't trained any ground work because he expected a stand up war.

Mir's striking may not be on the level of Kongo, but he isn't bad. The only way Mir can lose this in my opinion is if he gets cocky, (wouldn't be like him) and tries to prove that his striking display against Nogueira wasn't a fluke or anything to do with Nog's staph infection.

I know Velasquez is one of the top wrestlers in the division but he made Kongo look like a joke on the ground. If Mir wants to get this to the mat, he will and he will win there.

Not a big fan of Kongo, ground game is awful and for such a big, mean striking specialist he's not hugely impressive standing either.

Mir is the smarter fighter, can certainly hold his own in the striking and if there's any visit to the ground at all he should finish the fight easily.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,707 ✭✭✭pablohoney87

I also heard mir is gonna have to cut to 265 now(but not cut much) because hes packed on a consideable amount of muscle since the brock fight.

Did you see Mir against Nog? Kongo's stand up is all he's got and even at that I still think Mir's is better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭t-ha

    Kongo's stand-up > Mir's stand up
    Mir's everything else >> Kongo's everything else

I expect Mir to look to stand with Kongo to assess his own game/ make a statement, but ultimately to win this on the ground. If he stands all night he's gonna get his face all bust up again.

I am so pumped for this fight after watching the Countdown..hopefully Kongo by brutal KO which breaks Mir's teeth and nose

Just watched the countdown there. Mir somehow manages to be incredibly likable and unlikable at the same time.
He sounds really intelligent and he knows what he's talking about but comes across so arrogant.
I'd like to see Kongo knock him out but I think Mir is much more well rounded and will take it.

I agree with your statement about Mir. He's hard to like & dislike. I don't really like to say I dislike fighters as most of the trash talk they do outside the ring is to try get under the other opponents skin etc.

I do however find Mir very arrogant at the best of times but he is probably the most dangerous heavyweight when it comes to subs. He's very quick & intelligent. He can take a fair beating too.

Kongo on the other hand is a very safe (and boring) fighter at the best of times. He kind of reminds me of Frank Bruno. He has possibly the most impressive physique of any fighter in any weight division in MMA & has great power in his hands but he hasn't really got that killer instinct or ability to finish a fight against smarter opponents even when he rocks them.

Valasquez is a good example. Kongo had several opportunities to finish him when he rocked him bad with good strikes but he allowed Valasquez to grab & hold on to him until he recovered & then start dishing out punishment after getting control of Kongos back.

If Mir plays smart & isn't cocky he has a very good chance of subbing Kongo in R2 or R3. I believe the 1st round will be slow with lots of jabs & both with the feelers out.

Kongo has a strikers chance if he keeps his distance. I don't see him ground & pounding Mir even if he rocks him as Mir will probably pull an arm or leg off if Kongo drops down on him.

Most of Mirs wins come from subs. Most of Kongo's wins come from KO/TKO's. It makes for an interesting match up. Kongo is tough & almost all his losses are from decisions & I think only one loss by TKO. All of Mir's losses are from TKO's!!!!!

I'm going to put my neck out & say Kongo by R2 TKO!!!!

Yep, I'm happy with that :D

I dont agree with that to be honest, i think mir's standup has come a long way and congo hasnt really faced many decent stand up guys to be fair.
Having said that Frank is maybe underestimating Congos ground game, yes Cain totally dominated him there but Cain is a top class wrestler and i dont think think Frank will be able to take him down as easy as Cain made it look, we shall see though!!! :D

You are misinformed my friend. Kongo has faced some of the best strikers in the mma heavyweight devision and won. Check out his record. He has fought guys like cro cop and yvel and hardonk.

    Cant wait for this fight.

He lost to yvel. Was not impressive against Cro Cop and against Hardonk was probably his best performance in the ufc. Cro Cop did manage to mount him though. Kongo is overated as a striker and a fighter i think.
