    Great win!
Seeded 16th going into the competition and finishing 9th with a trophy to boot aint half bad.

Sickning to think Ireland wont be part of the World series* Meanwhile Japan finished 15th :/

    *If thats still the case

Japan are qualified for 2018/2019 season.

Ireland despite finishing higher in the world series rankings than a core team and getting 9th in the world cup are not.

We will have an opportunity to qualify for 2019/2020 and hopefully we seize it with both hands.

I have no interest in Sevens but to finish 9th looks like a great result.

It's not right in my view that one match decides who plays on the tour. Anything can happen in a one off match especially in sevens. Promotion should be after a series of tournaments just like whoever wins the series is after a number of tournaments.
I don't think there will be any change from the 16 team tournament in Hong Kong especially changing it to more than 1 tournament. It's 6 games that decide if you make world series or not. Yes you could have a bad day in final and lose but there won't be a change for cost reasons alone

Hence my dismay at our comparative finishing positions.

Top 8 teams compete for Championship.

    9-16th compete for the Challenge.

    17-24 compete for plate/ bowl

Just saw O'Briens try again Oz. Brilliant stuff.

It wasnt one match that decided things. They were able to win all games to win qualifier
Hopefully we will make world series in Hong Kong next year but can have no complaints we're not already

Womens side won 2 group games. Beating Italy 12-7 and England 27-0 and lost to Poland 17-14.
They were then defeated in the quarter finals by Scotland 17-15 then beat Spain 14-5 and then Italy 28-10 to finish 5th

Mens team play in fourth round of european series next weekend in Poland
They play Portugal, Spain and Italy in the group stage

3 wins from the 3 group matches in Lodz
    19 - 7 vs Italy
    17 - 7 vs Spain
    35 - 12 vs Portugal

First 2 games were tough. A few more tries for Terry Kennedy who looks even leaner and quicker. Top try scorer for the series.

10pt cushion on the top of the Series so just one more win will take the European title for the first time. Some year the squad is having. Just one score in Hong Kong the only real missed step.

They should surely get one or new invites onto the HSBC World Series again this season? Ahead of Hong Kong in April would be ideal

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,967 ✭✭✭✭The Lost Sheep

Men beat Sweden 47-5, France 42-0 and Germany 35-5 to win tournament

Might get more world series invites.
Teams only ever get invites to 2 tournaments on the world series so while the actual events may differ from last season the number mightnt change for us

So effectively we have to hope England qualify via world series, and we beat France in the regional qualifier?

Is Russia European or Asian for the purposes of qualification.

Just on qualifying for the Olympics, I read that England women will represent GB in qualifying, is this the same for the men? If so I assume Scotland and Wales won't be at European qualifying tournament which will make life a lot easier for us.

Good performances in the group stage coming close to beating the black ferns
I wonder did they lose a bit of confidence from that?
