ireland finished 15th in the series last year despite only playing two events. That itself should have been worthy of promotion. A one off in Hong Kong might not suit them as much if its hot and humid.

They will get there eventually but its annoying if they underperform in one or two games and they have to wait a whole year.
15th was ahead of all invite sides and then core side Russia... and that itself shouldnt have been worthy of promotion.

No invitatational side has ever* or likely will ever come third place at a series event again. They seem to have taken a step backwards this year though.

Germany beat Chile 19-7 in a very tough bruising encounter with one from each team going off injured. Germany looked very good in defense having looked poor yesterday. Just shows the difference a day makes.

    Ireland 33 Russia 7.

Played very well with excellent intensity. Russia had no answer to our pace and couldn’t defend around the ruck.

    Criminal from the Philippians there

Playing Russia in the quarter final with the winners playing Germany/Uruguay. Chile playing Tonga and winners playing HK or Philippines.

Much more complete performance and same again against them later in the QF will do.

Germany v Uruguay will be a good match
    Chile v Tonga likewise
HK should beat Philippines is the last QF

We are playing Russia at 11 28 am.

Chile actually got a better draw by losing. Expect them to be in the final.

Jesus Ireland are like a different team now

Great start for Ireland, Russian heads might drop now after that start and this mornings thumping.

Thought Uruguay were robbed. Ref seemed to give everything to Germany. Couple of times Uruguay got over the ruck and it looked perfect execution ad the ref gave a penalty to the Germans. He missed the knock on at the end as well.

The pace from Ireland is ferocious!

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,121 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

McNulty is something else, great player.

Wonderful from Conroy, we are going to win this qualifier I think.

The old give the ball to Conroy strategy is working fairly well.

    Yeah clear knock on.

Russia very weak from the kick offs. Germany much better defensively but our pace should be too much for them.

They looked wrecked after the last game so hopefully that carries through a bit

    Semi is at 5.30am tomorrow

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,208 ✭✭✭shotgunmcos

Well done Ireland. Another step forward, that was a show! Semi will be a brand new day. Fresh legs. Going to be tough but if we come out of the blocks like that and maintain that intensity and pace we will take some stopping!

The likes of Conroy will get the plaudits but Harry McNulty is something else. Incredible player.
