Most teams on the world series generally have a forward of some description, be it a 2nd row or backrow. I'd say it'll be something we'll have to bring in to combat the physicality of other teams at the breakdown etc next year.

I'd love to see Max Deegan play Sevens.

I know this will never happen as he has a massive 15s career ahead of him but if he got a good grasp on the game he'd be unbelievable.

He's got the hands, pace and physicality. He's a real all around athlete. If he were to shed 5-6kgs to get a yard or 2 more pace I really think he'd prosper

    Sure is
    NZ are well, NZ
Eng chasing Olympic QF top 4 and home event
Sco tend to up their game at London to put it mildly

A win in any of those pool matches would be something
    Cup QF would be amazing

Interesting one in that I think I'm right in saying we want England to do really well in the next two rounds as it helps our Olympic prospects. So we could actually be doing ourselves a disservice if we beat them in the group game.

Yeah. 2 rounds left and England 14 points behind South Africa so would need big England performances and South Africans not to do well. And South Africa have won 2 of last 3 rounds.

    Next world series events
Women: Langford Canada 11/12 May(play Australia, Brazil, Canada in pool), Biarritz 15/16 June
Men: London 25/26 May(NZ, England, Scotland) and Paris 1/2 June

    Kinsale 7s next weekend
Tullamore(midnight 7s) and Connemara will have their usual 7 tournaments through the summer as well as plenty others.
Would be good to see a club 7s series put in place now we're in the world series. could be interesting way to see potential 7s pro players.

There's going to be an AIL 7s for women. Completely separate from the summer events ( which is mad)

Great to have but crazy to split it from the summer events. Should be tied into the existing events and would be far more successful.

Good mix of players, and interesting to see the squads are still leaning towards more full time 7s players and not those contracted by the provinces.

Would be interesting to see if there was a pathway for academy players to be involved in wider squads, the likes of Balacoune and the O'Briens did quite well in 7s.

Both are players that are needed by provinces and have featured this season, players who arent likely to be needed by provinces are the ones used

With us now on 7s series isnt that understandable?
It will go to full time 7s players and academy players who may then go on to be full time 15s or 7s.

I had no idea the 7s guys were only on €18k. That's awful. It's below minimum wage.

Ireland are going to field a team in RugbyX made up of 7s team so hopefully a few more quid for them.

doesnt take up the whole year though, id imagine that would increase when Ireland are in the series next year?? or are they making that next year?

And to be fair to be paid 18k to fly around the world playing rugby in the sun is hardly working in the coal mines lol

It's a full time job and the figure is staying. That's why it's out there. Nucifora was doing the media rounds after his extension and was asked about the €18k and he said he doesn't want to raise it.

€18k isn't enough to live on in Dublin. You might be able to jet around but you couldn't be doing 7s for more than two or three years before you'd have to retire early.

I think the vast majority of players do only a couple years, and anyone who does longer is on a higher contract

If that's true there's no evidence of it.

I'd like to think the players are paid enough to make a bit of a career out of it. Because this is effectively a badly paid career break.

Is that just a base salary and bonuses for appearances/places in tournaments though?

Edit: "It is understood that the players will receive bonuses of €500 for competing in each of the 10 World Series events, and €250 for other Grand Prix events, but even if a player avoided injury and competed in every event, the maximum he could earn in a year would be €23,750"

So it's still fairly low, but the bonuses bring it further inline with the basic bottom end salary of a lot of top tier nations like Scotland and New Zealand

I would imagine academy players get more at the provinces, no?

I mean, even a non test player like Adam Byrne is probably making enough to fund half of the squad.
