Eh, overall I think the town is great. With the kyle centre and the retail park after opening up I think the town has plenty.

    However I'd love:
    a proper night club,
    more live gigs,
a better value hardware/homestore like b&q rather than telfords and homebase,
A BAKERS (went into phelans at the top of main st the other day and was very let down. If theres a bakers around please god tell me where it is)
more litter bins cos I walk my dogs around the town and end up carrying the bags of poop for miles until I find a bin (I couldn't bring myself to do what a lot of people seem to do down here and just leave it behind for some poor git to cycle through it )

I'm really straining to find stuff, the stuff i wrote above doesn't take away from my view of the town at all and I gotta say I'm very happy down here since I left the big smoke 18 months ago

    Hi all,

Of the top of my head,

Boots - for the missis you understand
    M & S - Lovely food

A LOI football team would be great, I'm a long suffering St Pats fan myself.
Oh and an airport would be nice.

A night club worth the name and proper live music are badly needed. Sky Venue has been a real let down for the past 2 years or so, Club23 is a joke, and as for Egans?? Coppers can be acceptable when not jammed to the gills with people who should have been stopped at the door for various reasons.

ALDI would be a good addition. Most of the other shops that are worth having are here already, with the possible exception of a decent electrical retailer.

There are LOI teams in Tullamore and Carlow already (A league), so can't see where Portlaoise would fit in. And as was seen in recent weeks, despite having the best club GAA team in Leinster, there doesn't seem to be an appetite for non-TV sport or teams in the town.

Apart from that, I wouldn't avoid a KFC if it came along!!

    Better choice of quality restaurants.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality of restaurants when i moved down. Gormans is as good a pub grub type place as you'll find, as is Tracey;s out the road. There is also the Indian Prince in kilminchy, very good and very reasonable. In town, that steakhouse is nice, as is the Lemon Tree near Delaney's. Plenty of option for lunch also, the club sandwich and chips down in Egans is great!

    This.

More entertainment, like a real bowling alley for example.
    Better live music.

Proper Education Facilities, we badly need those new primary and secondary schools. But schools are finally being built so that is good. An IT or university would be nice, but its not going to happen for a long time and its not something we need immediately.

I could talk all day about the health services, but the problems are not local to portlaoise only. There is good infrastructure there, well decent anyway, however staff and doctors in particular, well I certainly think the quality of some is not up to scratch by a long way. I'm glad I dont have to visit there too often.

We do need something different for tourists, there is not a lot in the town for this market. I'm not sure what could be done within the town itself but I think Laois is under utilized in regards market. We have things like Rock of Dunamaise, Emo Garden/House and other estates, Slieve Blooms, golf courses etc. There is opportunities for things like proper cycling trails in the mountains etc to be set up for when the weather allows. I just think as a whole Laois has good potential for tourists if it was marketed and exploited correctly.

Retail industry: Has come along way in a short number of years, its probably not the best time for it at the moment, but its progressing nicely at the moment with regards new industrial estates etc being set up. I would agree with whoever said about some nice non rip-off clothes shops, in particular for men.

Entertainment: Bit of a difficult one, I'm not big into night club culture etc so I dont know what exactly it is like, but obviously reading here and from what people at home do say, its not good and very mundane, so something could probably be done here. We do have some other sources of entertainment, cinema, bowling alley, theatre. Not sure what else I would like to see. For the young kids I'm not sure if there is enough. I understand there is something set up inside Sky Venue, regarding computers and games etc (maybe I'm wrong) which is good if true. But there is not a lot else for them I think, but same problem everywhere else I suppose.

Sports: We have a good GAA, soccer club - obviously dont have a LOI team but club is well run etc and there are a few different teams in portlaoise, rugby club nor sure but I think its good. Triathlon is starting to get big and there is a very good club here and a few groups for cycling etc going around, new leisure centre is good for the swimmers too. The one thing I would like to see is some decent athletics facilities. There was a new track built (not tartan), but in terms of field events etc the facilities are not finished and equipment not there. I do not think there is flood lighting there either, maybe its has been put in, so its not possible to train there during the winter I think. I know from personal experience there really is a great caliber of athletes in Laois and I think if the facilities were better a lot of the very promising younger generation would stick with it.

Sorry for the essay but just my thoughts

You can get into Coppers if your are drunk as an ass, fighting the lad beside you and acting like a gobsh1te but if your wearing a hoody the world of coppers stops and you have two clowns dressed as bouncers on top of you like a shot.I was there a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday and there was this gosh1te falling around the dance floor drunk, bumping into everyone on dance floor and looking for a fight but bouncers were more interested in getting me to take my jacket with hood off.

I hear they are about to start charging to get in, that coupled with club23 going back to be a place for adults to go where its a good music venue and strictly over 21s it will hurt coppers.

I've had this experience too. It pisses me off no end. It's cold out and I don't own a jacket without a hood.

Ah I enjoyed it though I was only in there once...not the craic I expected though...bit of a let down with the quality of slow set dancers :D Club23 might be better when it sorts itself out.

Heard there is a new casino in Portlaosie...Over Ryans bar on the main street.

Anyone been in it yet??? Looking for something to do on new years eve...That is a 'little' different from the usual overcrowded pubs and nights clubs..
