There's a piece of software -Photoshop plugin- that achieves the same effect for you. It's called bokeh made by alienskin software. I downloaded a trial and it's really good

great tutorial from ancatdubh, it's as simple as cutting out a shape to put in front of your lens

for the shots that i posted here i used a lens called the lensbaby composer (you can take a look at it here) - this lens allows you to change the aperture manually by literally taking it out of the lens and replacing it with a new one. so to get the heart shaped lights i popped in the heart shaped aperture from this set.

the composer was a christmas gift from last year and i love it a lot!

but realistically you don't need a lensbaby to get the shaped apertures, all you need is some black card, a scissors and some tape

due to the overwhelming fear of a trip to the dentist tomorrow i was allowed to open my new 50mm f1.8 a little early to cheer me up . the texture may not be to everyones tastes though.
