How are people finding jobs. I'm thinking of heading down in may and stay untill november. I'm currently working as a retail manager in Ireland bu have worked loads of odd jobs in my time. I'm willin to work at anything. Is there still handy odd jobs about?

Il have a bit of savings on me to keep my head above water but is it right to say that if you have a trade(nurce/carpenter etc) you have a better chance at getting a job.

I guess it depends where u look. I think retail will always need ppl down under. Odd jbs are pretty easy to pick up... (well compared to the conditions in Ire)

Im in Brisbane and cant find a damn thing the last few weeks!

I have over 5 years retail exp in good shops, and 8 months top Admin exp

But anything I've applied for, where I 100% matched their profile, Ive heard nothin back

I think the fact im on a WHV puts almost everyone off

Ironic, seen as the few that actually wanna use it for it's true purpose, cant!

    Drama.....

Can I suggest moving the search out of the main cities and looking more rural?
If you are travelling alone there is nothing tying you down and Queensland is a massive state.

You should consider doing Traffic control ticket. Its true that the girls often find it more difficult to get jobs than the lads ....but they often can work as Traffic Stop/Go chicks on the same gangs.

    = I thought you were a Sheila.

In 5 years of living in Australia I haven't yet met an Irish man who worked in anything other than construction or Engineering, mate there are a load of jobs out there.

I had a mate just moved from Sydney to Brisbane to operate an excavator in the new tunnel for $42 PH...... why would you want to F**K around in a shop?

    Lads,

Any of you have any links for a sample template for an Australian CV. Or if any of you have any tips on how Australian CV's different from Irish CV's.

    Cheers

after seeing a few CV, they don't differ apart from - in the info section state what visa status you have and when expire - this is the first question of non aussies we ask.

if going through and agent, they will take bits out of your cv anyway.
esp the hobbies, as no one cares you like GAA or socialising ;)

Ok, so only women work retail and in offices?

I wouldnt work them jobs cos unlike everyone else, I'm actually using my WHV for a working HOLIDAY

    I'm a guy and I'm in IT ;)

On a WHV you will be hard pressed to find certain types of jobs. Especially jobs where females normally work in e.g. retail, office admin. They just wont take you on cause its not worth the hassle having to train them up and then see them leave after 3 months. I am sure there is work but that bit harder to get and more people looking for fewer jobs.

I think the most important thing when coming to OZ is having a contact for a job. If you have family, friends over here make us of them. If you are good on the networking front than you will be fine, if you are not than things will be harder.

Top advice, a contact or family/friends sure will benefit your chance of a job

    I would'nt say retail is a more female-orientated job

Even as a customer I've noticed the staff are mixed, as it does be back home

and I've done different kinds, clothes, electronics, supermarket etc

I honestly think its my visa that's puttin everyone off. I'm gna leave it off my CV completely and see if I hear back this time

No I see men working in retail all the time, just never met any Irish guys on a WHV doing that sort of work. Maybe I hang around the wrong sort of Paddies!!

Can anyone give me some tips on where to find ads for jobs in rural areas?

Seek, Jobsjobsjobs, etc seem to be aimed more at the cities but I'd be happy to get shop/bar/farming/anything out in the sticks. Gumtree seems to have more people looking for jobs than offering them.

I have Premanent Residency coming through soon and i'd love to have some sort of work arranged so I have some cash coming in while I look for a "real" job. Thanks.

I worked in Target which is a large dept. store across Oz similar to penneys I suppose. Worked there for 6 months. I took the job because the hours were pretty flexible and if I did get an interview for something else I could work it into my hours. As it turned out I worked 6 months there and loved it. The people I worked with were really cool and cant wait for me to come back to Perth. Right now Im working in IGA saving as much as I can to hit the east coast.

I think alot of guys dont like the idea of working retail but for me it was that or eat into my savings and go home. Its not that hard to get retail work but its not for everyone. Alot dont like travelling all the way to this side of the world to work a job they did in college or school. I met a few who had graduated college with a business deg. and wouldnt work retail because they were college graduates. They seemed to be doing alot of interviews but no job.

I worked in the construction Industry and was looking for work here but as soon as I arrived the jobs dried up due to the global recession. Jobs werent available as most companies wanted to hold out on hiring new staff to see what would happen. Construction jobs were hard to come by. It was the exception to get one and unless you had an income you couldnt do interviews forever with no end result.
Sorry for the long post but I just felt the retail sector was getting a bit of a bashing. Sure everybody would love to get 42 dollars an hour but to fund the holiday you need cash and interviews and holding out for a better offer dont get you to far. :p

Good post... Moral of the story any job is better than no job. pride doesn't put $$ in your pocket

I had only mentioned that I knew there were construction jobs in Brissy because I have friends there............ I wouldnt know if there are retail jobs or not. There are jobs always labouring available because lads come to the end of the 6 months and go travelling its a case of making sure you are in the right place at the right time.

Talk of networking......people from farming backgrounds in Ireland have a big advantage and also being a Gaelic footballer can work wonders in Sydney.

No idea about Brisbane to be honset. I think IBM have a support centre of some sort there. I know cause that who I rang when one of their servers breakdown on me.:o

Sydney is the main place in OZ for IT but there is IT work in all the other major cities as far as i know but that bit harder to find. Totally depends on your skills and experience. If you are coming with 0 experience then you will find it tough, if you have say 15 years Oracle and Linux experience than obviously you wont have to try that hard to get a good job. Being on the defacto visa though will be your biggest advantage.

I think Canberra is really crying out for skilled IT staff and the wages are as high as Sydney but the place is much cheaper to live in. Heard its' boring place to be though!:D

just remember for canberra - there are massive amounts of IT jobs with fantastic salaries but you more than likely need citizenship as they are federal government jobs. may get lucky and get one not requiring it but the vast majority do need it and are not flexible. So your perm residency ends up being the equivalent of a whv.....

Sydney is showing some stiring in the IT market but now everywhere will be on a recruitment freeze till Feb due to the holidays so dont panic if u see nothing over the next few weeks.

to the poster who asked about rural...I posted before....google the area's ...see if they have an online local paper...and thats where you will find the jobs...very few bother to post on the recruitment sites. however you are on the right track..there are some good jobs outside of the cities. (and, as I said before, they are much more likely to get you sponsored if they like you as regional sponsorship is all the go).

Cheers guys. No chance would I go to Canberra though, a truly awful spot even though the money is very good. I have heard of the gov fast-trackign residency in some cases to get IT people there but would rather not.

Recruitment freeze till Feb sounds interesting as I'll only be arriving then so could work out well in that regard.

    Thanks again.

    Guys

Just back from a trip to Melbourne. Talking to family and friends there the job front is ok for Aussies and residents.

But the problem is when you’re on a WHV employers don't want to send time and money on you only to have to leave after a few months.

    That's exactly it

Indeed there are heaps of jobs goin, but they're crackin down on hiring travellers as recruitment and training = time and money, so of course they'll take a resident in every case

Only hope is findin a contract <6m in a field you're really good at, but even then, a lot of contracts potentially want to make you permanent

    Hack!

So I'm over the jobs buzz, and Oz in general

    Off home in Jan..............

It's what I am hearing and is being echoed here. If you are on a WHV then forget about finding work unless you have a very specific skill or trade thats needed. Casual work is something you will not get in the big cities unless maybe you are in Perth.

If you are on skilled, defacto, migrant visa that doesnt have the 3 month restriction than you should pick up work easy enough. The OH and myself are going over next month from NZ and she has had 2 offers already purely because she will be on a defacto visa. She also heard from her friend she knows quite well who is a regional retail manager that they no longer consider people on WHV, too much hastle with immigration and too much hastle to train them only to see them let go.

The days of the WHV being a stepping stone to other more permanent visas appears to be coming to an end.

Of course all this might be moot if you have good work contacts in OZ. Networking is becoming ever more important. Remember the 80's in New York, its wasnt what you knew its WHO you knew.....

I cant stress the last point enough.
