My friend has not received an invite to the conferring ceremony. He failed one exam in second year but resat it and passed. He passed third year completely. Whats the procedure. Who should he contact?

He did not receive a request from the HEA to participate in their survey of graduates either.

    Because

    a) The weather in Waterford is really quite good compared to other places and the WIT hasn't the foresight to see past it's own boundaries.

    b) This ceremony usually goes ahead in October but had to be moved to January as they could not allocate enough from the 2009 budget to cover it. The class of '09 has now become the class of '10.

Its crazy having it this time of year!!

How come my friends can graduate in aug/sep/oct... but we have to wait till january!!

Aside from the fact that january is known to have bad weather every year.. be it ice or floods, its also unfair to ask parents / friends and thoes graduating to take another day or in some cases two days off work after christmas hoildays!

Is this a set graduation time from now on or could it change next year?

There has been an ongoing problem in WIT with regard to the cold temperature in the chapel in January - what possessed them to hold the Grad ceremony there now. Bad management and inconsideration for graduates and there families - yes thats it. As a student you get fobbed off and it doesn't change when leave

You must be there for 9am at the latest if you are graduating at 10am. How are people who aren't from Waterford meant to manage this especially with the roads being so bad. Half our group can't make it, because they would need to stay overnight - there families can't afford it. It would appear that WIT does not realise there is a recession on at the moment.
Silly to expect them to facilitate people.

Further there was uproar the year before last over exams being held in the chapel in January as it is unbearable cold in there - but typical in WIT, they can't connect the dots. Also its very difficult for people (especial people who work in the private sector) to get time off work straight after Christmas - not something WIT management would every consider.

Maybe people are trying to make you feel better, because they can see its crazy but there isn't alot anyone can do about it, you could always email the college and the student union.

It doesn't matter if Waterford is not hit as badly by the cold weather either, it still the coldest time of the year - every year, don't hold the Grads at this time of year - its maddness.

WIT is well aware of the cold conditions in College Street campus chapel, it has been the cause of many a problem for students (especially students who have any kind of illness) at exam time, this used to take place at the start of January. Its an old building and they don't have the money to repair it properly.

There was talk of a sit in there only two years ago and much upset the year before that because it was so cold, it was almost putting students at a disadvantage when sitting exams. The problems caused by the coldness in January have been known for years and years, WIT do not need to control the weather but someone there could use there brain - original thought - sorry thats not allowed.

Its unfortunate but WIT does give that appearence that it doesn't particularly care about the needs of its students and all its interested in is university status. Maybe they should ask the select committee and/or Minister of Education to the Grad ceremony, the conditions would surely knock back any chance of Waterford University ever becoming a reality.
Tis sad but until the place is run like a proper business, it will never put its students needs on an equal par with its other needs.

I just got a phone call from a friend saying that she wont be able to make the Grads, she can't get the time of work and can't really afford it after Christmas anyway. She sounded very disappointed.

I have emailed WIT to let them know of my dismay at their decision to hold the grads at this time of year, I think if people don't let them know that there is a problem then they will never realise it themselves.

Well done, its great that you got to enjoy it too.

But it has to be said again, you were lucky you could get to it and lucky you could afford to get to it, especially after Christmas - not every one is as lucky

WIT's website was updated today stating that graduations will not be affected due to weather. Really is a disgrace that when schools are being closed all around the country, including Waterford, they are still continuing with the graduations, forcing people to either miss it or to take chances making the trip to Waterford.

Email the WIT or the registrars ofiice.

About a third of our group were missing, only two didn't want to come. Out of the 16 who made it, half brought no one with them because their families could not make it due to weather conditions.

A couple had been expecting their parents to bring their suits and were a disappointed that they had jeans and jumpers on, but for anyone that this may happen too - don't worry no one noticed with the gowns.

We didn't start leave the room till 10.15 because we were trying to wait for people who had been delayed.

The ceremony itself was fairly speedy - liked the comment about guys and how they should be given caps as well. Also the ladies were told to throw their caps in the air at the end which was a nice touch.

WIT needs to change the Grads back to mid term

Thats right. Some courses such as Social Studies and Criminal Justice have modules related specifically to inquality and gender and the problems incurred because of this, yet this outdated so called tradition still exists in what is a relative new Institute of Technology.

It was nice to see that the head of humanitites appreciated the irony of the situation and was prepared to comment on it.

I graduated this week aswell, it was a great day, very well organised(didn't drag on and was actually enjoyable) but to have it so close after Xmas/New Year is stupid, it is a big oul shin dig like but I was kinda out of pocket after Xmas, the only reason I made it was because I'm from Waterford... I don't think cancelling it was an option, weather or not like, but if I was graduating for my final year and couldn;t have made it, I would have been gutted :(

But sure you still made, January is a stupid time to have it as I said above, I understand what you mean about having it during term time but sure when do the WIT actually suit anybody but themselves?
