Unfortunately it clashes with a PMP run this weekend, but I hope to make Annacurra and Tibradden (both of which match up nicely with my 10k tune up races for Barcelona).

Course will be slightly different to the google map shown due to residual ice and felling respectively. Contour track over to 2 rock is currectly ice and we'll use the new section of WW down to Kilmashogue track instead of old WW as that's messed up.
Registration will open at about 9am, 9.15am for definite anyway.

Do people do group training in the Cork city area and what would be the best wa to get in contact.

I'll be there. Might be a bit cold for the boards AC vest :)

I won't be able to make it. Injured left achilles has me out of action for the next few weeks

    Hi,
I am thinking of doing mountain run in Ballyhoura in feb which would be my first run. I have been doing some running on my own in local woods and am wondering if anybody can give some info about Ballyhoura run - as in is it very steep etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,186 ✭✭✭El Director

i'll be doing it too, my first mt run, haven't ran for boards ac before either, was looking forward to it but after coming off my bike twice this morn and two punchers i feel both unlucky and jittery!!

PeterX managed a great race today, and from my marshal vantage point I saw some good runs from the Boardies. In the absence of Forrest Gump, circa running across USA Enduro, Slogger Jogger was well up the field and first Boardie home, and I personally felt pressured by how well DuneBuggy has improved over the winter. How did anyone else do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 217 ✭✭Dunebuggy

Yes a great route today - well done to PeterX and his merry men .. including Enduro Bin Ladin :-) Great start to the years racing, i taught there was alot of newbies which is great to see.

I had forgotten what race pain was like .. Thanks for the compliment but god i wouldn't be pressured now everyone will be out to kick my ass . . position was due to what I felt was a slightly weakened field, no disrespect to the winners it was still a great time - but i was thankful for my %

    Well done SJ, good run..

It was a good turnout, hope wre get the same for Annacurra another great route .. . .

Does anyone know how much distance there was between last years and this years race ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Great race. Great to see lots of new faces in the mix for top spots too. Ticknock today had it all and more. Who expected to be running (or trying to run) in snow. Running along felled forest and along a rushing stream bed was interesting too :D Thanks for the encouragement D'pop. Looking forward to seeing you all at Annacurra.

Boards 4th team- welcome on board Brendan!

What was the story behind the guy who was fourth in the race? He was at least 4 minutes ahead of everyone when he passed my viewpoint with a few k to go- did he go astray? Or do the short course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,186 ✭✭✭El Director

Really really enjoyed my first mts race and delighted with my time and also the fact that i didn't injure myself!

Wow! Just had a look at the photos and it looks like great fun.

Would love to give it a go but weekends tend to be hectic ferrying kids to and fro' their many hobbies.. On the chance that I do get a free Sunday, is it possible to turn up, register and take part in a race (even if it might be the only one I get to compete in).

How do you guys find the ascents in these races by the way - been trying to work some hills into my running. Had a lash at running up Slieve Foye in the Cooleys last week (around 580 metres, probably 450+ of ascent) and have to admit I walked a fair bit of it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Is it possible to turn up, register for a race and run? Absolutely! Reg fee is a tenner for the year and race fee is 7 per race. The best value in town.

Every race is different. Walking is part of the experience in some races for most except for the leading lights. You do get used to the hills after a while and you'll find yourself running more. If you train on the hills it'll set you up nicely for these races.

Unfortunately I'm out of the next one too. There's a memorial race being run for someone I knew that I should attend. Will deffo be along for Tibradden.

A section of tape had been blown or moved astray so the leader went inadvertently wrong and finished 2nd, I think, as a result.

I clocked 10.14k last year and 10.04k this year.

Thanks SJ - As peterX predicted, PB's all round , .1OO Meters is very little distance ..

I really feel sorry for him, he was ahead by a long way just before the snow, and running very strong. I helped mark this part of the course, and as I had gone wrong on it last year, we made sure to be sure there was tape all over the place, and it was all in place when demarking.
However, I marshalled one point, just down from a corner, where some runners were stopping, confused at the line of tape that lay across the ground blocking another path. Understandable under race conditions, but it perhaps needs to be stressed- you NEVER cross a line of tape!

Hey Mick, are you going to get people to time the flatout downhill mile again this year? Any chance of having a better marker for the start of it, I couldn't spot it last year so didn't get to time my mile!

I can't wait for Annacurra now, I've switched clubs though, might make the team event interesting!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Hey Timaay. Unfortunately the revamped Annacurra route cuts out the mile section from the last time. On the recce this Saturday I'll measure out a distance of the new trail which might make another mile length.

Recce at 11am this Saturday if anyone is interested.

D'pop - PeterX was very clear in his pre-race speech for people not to cross lines of tape

I'm sure he was! TBH it's race conditions that put people off- you come to a junction, you've runners on your back, you're watching the terrain: sometimes you just see the tape in a split second and make the wrong decision. If you're running well and coping with the terrain, it can take a while to convince yourself that the absence of markers means you gotta give up all that hard-gained ground and turn back...:) as it says in the race report, that's part and parcel of hillrunning!

    Hi folks,

Anyone familiar with the route on Black Mountain used by the IMRA?

    http://www.imra.ie/events/view/id/726/

Says it's just short of 10km but I thought this was an 'out and in' and the 'out' looks further than 5km.

Have a few hours tomorrow afternoon and was thinking of running the route as I believe there is a trail/track most of the way..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Hi Paul, I haven't run it myself. PeterX or Enduro might comment? If you check the race report for the event last year or the year before it might give distance / more details.

Apologies, says on there that the short route is 9.7km - short route runs as far as Carnavaddy.. Longer route must be another 8km or so!!!! I'll try and do the short route tomorrow and build up to the long one!

Four of us ran it yesterday morning, in glorious clear sunshine. Route was better than I've ever seen it, if we get similar weather next weekend, everyone's in for a real treat. Trails were icy in a few leeward spots, but free from mud/puddles, and very runnable.

Not too much new snow down here, didn't notice any on top as I drove past Annacurra this evening.

    ..

The 9.7km short course was forced upon the organisers due to weather conditions and the strong likelihood of losing runners in the mist further out on the open, there are not really clearly defined trails for much of the open mountain section.

On a clear day it's fine, there are occasional good tracks and sometimes boggy streches without a clearly defined path. Sometimes you are in a fold in the ground and cannot see the next peak.
The usual advice really, bring a map and compass and someone who can operate them!
Nice route though and a grand pint after in the pub.

Hi Everybody, I started reading this forum last year to glean all the advice you guys where dishing out on Gael Force. Since then I've enjoyed reading the posts and advice on running.
I Plan on running in this Saturday’s IMRA race in Annacurra, apart from Gael force it's my 1st running event since I was 17 (17 years ago and back then anything longer than 400m was a struggle).
Anyway I wouldn't mind putting down Boards.AC as my club since I get all my advice from hear (covertly of course as I never post :)).

Haven't been down that neck of the woods in Wicklow really. How far is it down from Terenure? Hoping to make it to Croke Park by half two but might be wishful thinking on my part!

Annacurra to M50 on a Saturday would be about 40-45 min drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 236 ✭✭acurno

Good stuff. Looked far longer on google maps. Will make kickoff so hopefully! Though it'll take me longer going from Terenure to Croke Park than from Terenure to Annacurra!

See ye all on Saturday so

I just had a coffee with the guy who marked the race. He liked what he marked but commented on the challenge. Its strange that a small change to the route - its only about 10% different from last year - can make the world of difference. As you're running the first hill remember... theres a second later in the race. ;)
