Sadly I can't say it was dissapointing in sofar as it was exactly what I was expecting. :(

Once you get past the 'Men are satorial idiots and can't make us wimmins happy in any way shape or form' retoric the main jist of the suggestions is to dress like a child in Tommy Hilfigger clothes.
There were one or two nice pieces mentioned but they have been around forever - Church shoes, RayBan wayfarers.
It's so disheartening to see a recomendation to "Wear a suit". A bit more detail of what suit, cut, material, might not go amiss. It's the equivilant of an article recomending that women wear a dress, without telling you any of the basic information like mini, maxi, A-shapes, lightwight summer, ballgown or whatever.

As for the layout of what you should be wearing when you are in your 20'2, 30's or 40's. ****ing hell! It's like looking at the Littlewoods childrens catalogue.

I'm going to look at "The Satorialist" just to reafirm that there is a modicum of taste out there somewhere.

OldGoat... you know Things about clothes. Where could I get two toned shoes? My boyfriend would love a pair amd I can't seem to find any. I'd be wary of buying them on the internet because I don't know where is reliable for mens shoes...
    :D

Afraid that internet is probably going to be your only option. Twotone - or 'spectator' shoes are rare as hens teeth to find in shoeshops. Try and buy from a UK source to avoid any measurment mix-ups. Or, if you have confidence in US measurments then the worls is your oyster. Stacy Adams do some nice choices particulary if you want something that is not black and white.

My favourite pair that unfortunatly they did not have in my canal-barge feet size were a two tone black shoe from Loake. The leather of the quarters was a different texture and finish to the patent leather toecaps. Absolutly lovely. I'm still hunting for a pair in my size.

You should! The stuff on that site is gorgeous! :)

I kinda want to buy about half the dresses on that site. :D They are quite reasonably priced. When I was in the shop, I wanted to buy everything but my boyfriend had his "poor me in a clothes shop" face on so I had to leave... -_-

Got my Forever 21 order today, very quick delivery and happy with my stuff, and the fact that my money went to a good cause:) In contrast I ordered something from an Irish site on the same day and it has not even been dispatched:mad:

What's with the gomey smile on her face?? It almost looks like a jokey photo!

Her walk made me giggle; the poor girl is tiny but is still wedged into the skirt

Actually this one could be worse!

For anyone interested in Lipsy dress, Minx in Mullingar have a similar version for €20 or €30. The only (as far as I could tell anyway) was the corsage was a different colour.

Also, does anyone know if the blue Lipsy dress worn by Amy Childs is still available? And maybe the style name/number of it? I've looked on ASOS and Lipsy.co.uk, but couldn't find it. Thanks.

Does anyone know where I could get some really funky buttons on the cheap. I got this mac in RI about 2 summers ago. It's a well loved jacket except the buttons fell off and I didn't realise they did and I can't find the buttons again.

I'd say new buttons would totally make over the jacket too! :)

Do you want matching buttons, or are you going all quirky and mismatching them? :)

Hickeys have many many buttons. Or if you would like to go extra quirky, there is the Yellow Brick Road shop near Ormond Quay (?) that sell all kinds of beads and things. You could buy some big beads and use them as buttons?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,637 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

Go into charity shops and buy buttons. They usually have a coat attached.

Speaking of charity shops, what's the general consensus with them in the city? I know down here (wouthwest) buying second hand stuff is embarrassing and something to be ashamed of

Are people more open minded in the city, or is it just each to their own?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,727 ✭✭✭reallyrose

I love charity shops. Only thing is, I can't seem to find one that isn't full of granny clothes. I usually go in meaning to find the bestest cheap dress ever, but walk out with about 10 books. -_-

Areas where that way of thinking still exists tend to be goldmines for bargain hunters. I always try to get into rural charity shops, it's where the real bargains are to be found. But, like charity shops everywhere it's all bout going in there frequently.

Not just in charity shops! Setting up the Christmas sale in Topshop a few years ago I found one leather jacket that was €200 reduced to €100, so €75 with staff discount. We were working late after hours so I hid it in the stock room until the next day :pac: There was only one and it was my size, I HAD to!

If you're in Dublin, the stretch up Camden St to Rathmines has loads of great charity shops. My mate got a gorgeous full length black skirt that is like all the ones on the highstreet for €2.50!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭boomkatalog

Oh wow. I'm not from Dublin but I'm there lots, hoping to move up soon. I'd love to find a few vintagey bits cheap, seems like every pretty thing I buy I see someone else wearing it, and often wearing it better >.<

Unique stuffs plz thnx :D (even if they're only unique because they're SO last season :p)

I made this map a while ago for some people visiting Dublin. Some of the vintage shops are of the very high end quality, ie dresses start at €200, but others are more affordable, like 9 Crow Street (prices start at about €15)

Worthy of a sticky of it's own. :)
I see you have Diruy Fabulous there. They had a bit of a write up in the Sunday Times. Last I heard they lost all their stock in a fire. Have they re-opened again?

EDIT: I've 'yoinked' your map and posted it on the Burlesque forum for the clothes collectors over there. /Shameless thievery

I'm planning a shopping day this weekend in Dublin city centre. Aside from my regular shops, can anyone recommend any decent charity shops around the city centre (or ones that have a decent amount of menswear)? I'd like to see what they have for the craic.

Oh. My. God. College is actually having a proper formal ball this year. So excited. I'll be taking my debs dress out of hibernation! Would love another chance to wear it.

GRARGH. Oasis clearly cuts all its dresses for people with tiny boobs. Tried on 4 dresses there this evening which fitted everywhere else, but either left me with boob overspill or not being able to get the zip all the way up because of boobage. :(

I don't have a lot from Oasis but I'm currently wearing an F cup and have bought two dresses there recently... but overall they do run a little small.

Last 'Grown Up Debs' was 6 months ago. I must prod Dominique and get her started on organising one for this year. Six months should be enough time for me to get the tux dry cleaned.

Oh do! So sad I couldn't go to the last one! The venue I work for actually have something very interesting coming up, I'll pop it up where when the announcement goes out, could be an idea for a F&A or Burlesque beers ;)

I tried my dress on, it looks so pretty! It's chocolate brown and I wore a gold sash at my debs, but I think I'll go for a teal colour this time. They go nice together.

I'll update the forum when plans are a bit more formalised for anyone interested.

Getting all excited about my possible move to the city this summer and becoming a city gal :D

The fashion in Dublin enthrals me, it's nothing like home. I've been given dirty looks for wearing coloured tights or knee high cons :( I can't wait to be somewhere more open-minded and quirky :D

I'm extremely pale myself but I think that colour looked great with your blonde hair. Did you get that dress recently in new look?
