Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Death and the Photographer

Bit of a morbid subject, but nevertheless one that will effect us all. It hit me when we had the unfortunate, untimely recent death of a Boards poster, Muineach (rip) .

Just wondering what people are doing with their photographs, some of which may either be valuable or as time passes important records of our times.

Are people putting these into their will. Of course if you have a relative thats interested or knows your work and it's potential value thats a bonus. If not maybe it's a different issue?

Has anyone considered the National Photographic Archive or know what their acceptance criteria are?

    Wow, deep topic.

It's something I have thought about, fleetingly.

Thankfully my OH has an interest in photography, so hopefully she will know what to do with them.

In general though, how many hundreds of thousands of potentially brilliant photos are just "lost" each year, when a hobby photographer dies?

Speaking of which, I must make a will.

If she is ... she's making a big mistake. :D You won't get rich from my photos, but they hopefully bring some enjoyment to people. :)

But, it's a valid question - what happens to our images when we're gone?

Google archives them in the cloud and they all go creative commons...

The IPF have started an archive and they will store your photos, so in years to come they will have a full record of photos from different Irish photographers from different locations.

They'd probably invent some posthumous medal (the Extinction maybe) and charge your estate a small small fortune annually for the privilege. :D;)

I can see it that my sister will take over the HDD from my PC, selects few pictures on her own to present to family and keep the HDD till the next water leak in her flat, then game over.
And those few negatives (approx. 300) will be thrown away in two years time after signing the "Photographer Release Form".
That somehow reflects my own opinion on my happy snapping.
but if somebody wants to inherit loads of garbage, just let me know :p
