Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Help! **N00b alert**

My other halfs laptop was bought just as Vista was launched but is running XP (gives you idea how old it is)

Recently she has said that it is being more and more slow, so last night i ran the in house system clean up from the start menu. Once this was done i noticed a pop up saying there were 32 updates available! She never shuts it down properly - just puts it to sleep by closing the lid.

Anyways i ran the auto updates and 4 hours later everything was complete. I did notice that 3 (i think) of the 32 updates failed to install. These may have been something about security. I didn't pay much attention to them, but they were definitely all the same error.

Anyways i selected ok let the laptop run its restart. But now it fails to boot.

When it turns on it goes to the black screen saying start via
    - Safe mode
    - Safe Mode with Networking
    - Safe mode with command prompt

    - Last known good configuration

    - Start windows normally.

NONE of these work for me. It just goes around in a circle and back to this same screen, No backup disk was ever created and i had no boot disk (original box is attic never came with one)

How can i fix this? I have full internet access via my mac.

There is nothing on her laptop of value and can be wiped if necessary.

What make and model is the laptop? If it didn't come with a boot/recovery disc, then it most likely has a recovery partition. Read up re recovery process and wipe it.

Have you tried booting into safe mode?

They might be a recovery partition on your laptop, I have searched online and I think this is your model
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00753552.pdf

From this it states you can perform a factory restore by pressing F11 on bootup, here is the folllowing copied from the manual,

    "
Recovering from the Partition on the
    Hard Drive
You can perform a recovery from the partition on the hard drive
from either the Start button or f11.
To restore the system from the partition:
    1. Access the PC Recovery tool:
❏ To access PC Recovery from the Start button, select
Start > All Programs > System Recovery >
    PC Recovery.
❏ To access PC Recovery from f11, restart the computer and
press f11 while the “Press <F11> for recovery” message is
    displayed on the screen.
    The PC Recovery tool opens.
    2. Select PC Recovery and click Next.
The computer restarts and the PC Recovery tool opens.
    3. Click OK.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the
    system recovery.
